In this special episode of the Building Belief podcast, host Abby Skeans takes us on a deep dive into the transformative power of belief as we observe World Mental Health Day.
The impact of belief on mental health is profound. Limiting beliefs create a kind of “inner prison,” where anxiety, depression, and self-doubt flourish. But by adopting new, empowering beliefs—such as the belief that we are worthy of love, growth, and happiness—our mental state can dramatically shift. Abby delves into the process of shifting from fear to love, explaining that this is not just a spiritual concept but a practical approach to mental well-being.
Throughout the episode, Abby shares practical steps for dissolving limiting beliefs, which often form early in life based on painful or confusing experiences. By bringing awareness to these beliefs, questioning their validity, and replacing them with empowering narratives, we can change our mental and emotional patterns for the better.
The conversation also touches on the scientific side of belief work, discussing the concept of neuroplasticity and how our thoughts and beliefs physically shape the structure of our brains. By consciously choosing new beliefs, we can rewire our neural pathways, reinforcing healthier and more empowering mental states.
Abby concludes the episode by inviting listeners to reflect on their own beliefs—asking whether these beliefs are serving their mental well-being or holding them back. She emphasizes that belief is the foundation of healing, and that shifting from fear to love allows us to live with greater purpose and emotional freedom.
On this World Mental Health Day, this episode of Building Belief serves as a reminder that mental health is not just about managing symptoms, but transforming how we see ourselves and the world. By changing our beliefs, we have the power to change our lives. Tune in to hear this inspiring conversation on the power of belief and its role in shaping mental well-being.

A couple of years ago, during a dark period of my journey with depression, my Dad recommended a book by former Navy SEAL Commander Mark Divine called “Unbeatable Mind.” That book transformed the way I understand my inner life by giving me the tools to change my thoughts by tapping into innate power, which I felt like I had lost access to.
Mark is a severely impressive entrepreneur, leader, and coach. He’s the founder of SEALFIT, and a New York Times bestselling author known for his expertise in leadership, resilience, and mental toughness. After graduating as Honor Man of his SEAL BUD/S class, Mark served in the SEALs for 20 years, both on active duty and in the reserves, where he led numerous operations worldwide. His distinguished military career laid the foundation for his unique approach to personal and professional development.
Mark is the author of several influential books, including "The Way of the SEAL," "Unbeatable Mind," (the one that changed things for me!) and "Staring Down the Wolf," which provide actionable insights into achieving peak performance and developing an unbeatable mind. His SEALFIT training programs and Unbeatable Mind Academy have empowered thousands of individuals to push beyond their limits, enhance their physical and mental capabilities, and achieve extraordinary success in all areas of life.
A sought-after speaker and coach, Mark Divine combines his extensive military experience with a deep understanding of human potential. His work continues to inspire and equip individuals worldwide to navigate life's challenges with strength and clarity, embodying the warrior spirit in every endeavor.
I’m excited to share this conversation in honor of Father’s Day because it was my Dad who first connected me to Mark’s life-changing work. I hope this conversation inspires you and leaves you feeling empowered to stare down the wolf in your own life and unleash the warrior spirit within you that’s aching to set you free.

In many ways, this episode is the foundation for all others before it -- the inspiration for this entire podcast. And, I almost didn't record it. Not because the story isn't important; quite the opposite. But because telling such a deeply personal story took courage that it feels like I've spent years summoning.
In this episode, I share my personal struggle with depression. It has lasted more than twenty years, and has brought with it shame, hopelessness, and layers of pain. However, in early 2022, I learned a valuable insight that changed my perspective on my mental and emotional health and wellbeing. I unpack this learning and it's catalytic effect on who I am today as a means of sharing hope and knowledge with you.
If you, or someone you know, struggles with anxiety or depression, I hope you'll share this episode with them. If it touches one life, it will have done its job.
Above all. I want to say out loud that “you’re not alone.” Please reach out anytime. The world not only wants you, it needs your light, desperately.

The bright side of transformation often makes us think of butterflies – the becoming, the vivid growth, the ability to fly to new heights with a new perspective. But the truth is that in order for us to become, we must first die. Die to ego, die to false identities, and die to what was so that what can be is possible.
The stoics gifted us the phrase: memento mori - in Latin meaning: you must die. Perhaps one of the most painful deaths in our lives is the death of a dream. Whenever we had imagined how the story would play out for us, we suddenly found ourselves needing to surrender that a good dream for the great is possible, if we will only lay the prior expectation down.
When walking through one of those seasons in 2017, a friend gave me a book of liturgies called Every Moment Holy by Douglas Kaine McKelvey and dog eared the page of this liturgy for The Death of a Dream. I honestly didn’t even have language for what I was feeling at that time, but these words became one only ones that expressed my soul to myself.
Whatever you’re walking through. If you’ve ever had a moment where you knew it was time to lay something down, to surrender it, I hope this encourages you. And if you’re yearning for transformation in your life, remember that the way toward rebirth is necessarily through death. And that proximity to death gives us perspective, meaning, and true life.

The most counter intuitive but truthiest truth of all is that we believe our human limitations hold us back from making a difference and being worthy of divine love. But we’ve gotten the paradigm all wrong. Our frailties don’t disqualify us, they position us. Our humanity doesn’t disappoint God, it delights him. He created our humanity, with all of its beauty and finiteness. God chooses to work through us to restore the world solely because it brings him pleasure.
In this episode, we explore our human finiteness through stories new and old and reflect on the joy that the creator receives from working alongside us to bring restoration to a broken world. As humans, we often feel that we have to be all or nothing -- the hero or passive waiting for direction. Neither is true. We are meant to be partners with God, mending the world. We will get it "wrong" but we will also get a lot "right." How will we step into our calling that links arms with a purpose that asks us to just keep at it, because the doing is the beautiful and pleasurable part?

In this episode, we delve into the profound influence that belief can make in our story when we’re walking through a pivotal time marked by questions of purpose, existential reflections, and the search for deeper connections. This journey began for me with a simple yet profound question during a moment of solitude: "Does my life matter?"
As we explore the emotional landscape of seeking meaning, I recount a powerful season with a friend that reshaped my perspective and redefined my path. Listen as I share this weighty conversation with a friend struggling with self-doubt and overextension, both professionally and personally. This discussion, initially centered around practical matters of business, but quickly transcended into a life-changing dialogue about the expansiveness of divine goodness and the potential for personal and communal growth.
Witness the unfolding of belief, not just as a concept, but as a tangible force that brings about transformation and renewal. This episode not only highlights a personal story of change and growth but also illustrates the impact of our beliefs on those around us. Through time spent together, simple texts, and phone calls—those quiet, simple exchanges—we see how belief is built and shared, fostering a supportive community that extends beyond individual struggles.
Join me as we reflect on the sacred journey we undertake together, inspired by the belief in ourselves and each other, and the collective pursuit of this greater purpose – building belief together. This episode is a testament to the power of connection and the transformative impact of acknowledging and nurturing the light within us all.

In this episode, we explore the delicate balance between holding on and letting go, and the transformative power of creating margin as a space within our lives not just for rest, but for inviting miracles.
I hope this call to exchange our “doing” for more “being” challenges you to reconsider what you hold onto and why, encouraging a life led by intention rather than habit. From stories of personal surrender to reflections on the balance of the universe, this discussion spans the metaphysical concepts of yin and yang, the laws of attraction, and the deep, textured meanings of "to hold" in Greek philosophy.
What are we willing to carry, own, master, and cherish? Letting go isn't just about loss but about making room for growth and embracing what truly matters. As you join this journey, be prepared to ask yourself: What am I holding onto that defines me? What should I let go of to make space for something greater?

Since we’re going to start sharing our hearts on a weekly basis within this sacred space, I figured it would be helpful if we got acquainted. Or reacquainted. Hi, I’m Abby. You may have known me as many different things, depending on the season of life when our paths converged. Or you may not know me at all. I'm so glad you're here.
In this episode, I'll share my journey through former identities, versions of self, and a transformation that has allowed me to uncover my soul's essence for which I am both grateful for in the present moment, while holding a desire to continue becoming as well. At our core, we're all asking this question: who am I? Why am I here? What am I made for? Am I fully living into that? And how can I tap into that on a daily basis?
I hope you'll join me as we all tap into our true selves together – our souls, our essence, our God-designed purpose-full beings. Wonderful to meet you. I’m so glad we’re in this together.

Abby's own journey from darkness to light, overcoming depression, trauma, and abuse, ignited her quest to uncover life-altering modalities that liberated her from deep-seated limiting beliefs. Now, she invites you to join her on a journey of discovery and empowerment.
In each episode of "Building Belief," Abby engages in candid and inspiring conversations with remarkable women who have not only conquered their own inner demons but have also catalyzed change in the lives of others. From sharing stories of triumph over adversity to revealing the secrets behind cultivating unshakeable self-belief, these discussions offer invaluable insights and actionable strategies for personal transformation.
Together with her guests, Abby shares practical tools and transformative resources aimed at equipping women with the courage and confidence to embrace their true selves. Whether it's through daily rituals, resilience-building techniques, or profound moments of introspection, listeners will be supported to embrace the truth of who they already are.

For this final episode, I wanted to finish where we started, with the idea of trusting ourselves. The very first episode that I released was called “you already know” and was based on an essay that I penned years ago.
It has been a lesson that I have to learn continually, and come back to often. The idea that I am the most credible and trustworthy person when it comes to steering my life and purpose has been a hard truth to sink into.
The message that I want to leave you with at the end of Season 1 and at the end of 2023 is this: you already are.
Let that sink deep into your soul. Today, this month, this year.
Let it be your mantra as you close this year and step into the next.
