Built to Lead is a new companion offering that will make the leadership concepts of the Vernissage Health dialogue series accessible to all students in DLSPH and beyond. This series is hosted by Matthew Goulbourne (MHSc Class 2020) and Mobeen Lalani (MHI Class 2023) two emerging health leaders uncovering what it takes to be a great leader in today’s healthcare system.

Season 4 of Built to Lead focuses on how health leaders can “challenge the status quo,” act as “good rebels,” and create positive change in health care. The season brings listeners inspiring stories from visionary leaders who are shaping the future of health care.

Season 3 of Built to Lead focuses on how we can intentionally propagate joy as leaders. Focusing through the lens of Dr. Martin Seligman's PERMA model, Mobeen and Matthew interview leaders in North American healthcare systems and have joyful conversations about joy.

Season 2 of Built to Lead profiles the seminal work of Dr. Henry Mintzberg and explores the mindsets required of contemporary leaders in health - namely, the reflective mindset, the analytical mindset, the collaborative mindset, the worldly mindset and the action mindset. These leadership mindsets are revisited with Dr. Mintzberg and explored through the eyes of a diverse range of contemporary leaders in Canadian health care.

The inaugural season of the Built to Lead podcast is entitled “Leadership: From Self-Doubt to Confidence." The five episodes cascade with a focus on the podcast guests' leadership insights and experiences, starting with leadership perspectives of current students, recent alumni early in their career, mid-career leaders, and finally, concluding with established leaders with broad system experience.

Built to Lead Season 5: Resilience Across Career Stages with Rahul Chandran and Dr. Joanne Liu – Part 1| S5E008

Part 1: Resilience Across Career Stages with Rahul Chandran and Dr. Joanne Liu

Hosts Matthew and Mohini welcome two distinguished guests, Dr. Joanne Liu and Rahul Chandran, to Built to Lead, to explore the theme of resilient leadership in high-stakes global environments. Joanne, a globally recognized medical humanitarian leader and former International President of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), and Rahul, Chief Strategy and Partnership Officer at Grand Challenges Canada, share their insights from extensive experience in humanitarian innovation and global health leadership.

In this compelling conversation, Joanne and Rahul discuss the complexities of deciding when to stand up or step back in leadership roles, highlighting the critical importance of assessment, consultation, and intellectual clarity. They challenge the traditional concept of resilience, redefining it as a blend of adaptability, persistence, and emotional intelligence, rather than simply "toughing it out."

Both guests underscore the role of values-based leadership, emphasizing ethical clarity and humility as essential traits, particularly when navigating ambiguity and crisis. Rahul emphasizes the courage to seek help and admit uncertainty, while Joanne highlights the strength found in humility and genuine engagement with teams and stakeholders.

Stay tuned for Part 2, where Rahul and Joanne delve further into navigating career transitions, mentorship, and practical leadership strategies for emerging leaders.
