A Copy of A Copy: Episode 107 - The Wizard of Oz/The Wiz
As the year winds down at Car RayRob, there are just two episodes left of A COPY OF A COPY! For the penultimate episode, and in honor of the upcoming release of WICKED FOR GOOD, Ray and Rob dive into the 1939 classic THE WIZARD OF OZ and the 1978 Motown musical THE WIZ. The world of Oz has inspired many interpretations over the decades, with the Judy Garland original being the gold standard for Oz fans. However, the 70s musical made its mark by blending magical fantasy with the modern Black experience in America, creating a unique mirror image film that deserves its own recognition. Both films follow Dorothy Gale, portrayed as a young farm girl from Kansas in the original and as a mid-20s schoolteacher in The Wiz. After being transported to the magical land of Oz, Dorothy must journey with her newfound companions to meet The Wizard in hopes of finding her way back home. The Warner Bros classic features unforgettable performances by Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley, and Margaret Hamilton, while the Motown musical shines with standout performances by Michael Jackson (his only feature film role), Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross, and the iconic Richard Pryor. Tune in with Ray and Rob as they delve into the themes of these films and explore how representation shaped this COPY OF A COPY!
