CBS Radio Mystery Theateralso known as Radio Mystery Theater and Mystery Theater, often abbreviated as CBSRMT) was a radio drama series created by Himan Brown It aired on CBS Radio Network affiliates from1974 to 1982 and was later carried by the satellite feed in the early 2000s. The format mirrored classic old-time radio shows such The Mysterious Traveler and The Whistler, with episodes introduced by host, E. who offeredithy wisdom and commentary throughout. Unlike the hosts of earlier programs, Marshall was portrayed as a fully mortal figure, whose heightened insight and erud immersed listeners in macabre tales, akin to "The Man in Black" from another old-time radio show, Suspense.Similar to Himan Brown's earlier Inner Sanctum Mysteries, each episode of CBS Radio Mystery Theater began and ended with the eerie sound of creaking crypt door, accompanied by Marshall's unsettling greeting, "Come in!… Welcome. I'm E. G. Marshall." This was often followed by one of his signature phrases, such as "The sound of suspense" or "The fear you can hear." At the, the door would close, preceded by Marshall iconic sign-off,Until time, pleasant… dreams?" Marshall hosted the program from January 4 until February 1982, when actress Tammy Grimes assumed hosting duties the series' final season, preserving the established format.

CBSRMT aired each week, initially a new program every night. Later in its run, three or four episodes per week were new originals with the remaining nights featuring reruns. The series produced 1,399 original episodes, with a total of 2,969 broadcasts, including repeats. Each episode was allocated a full hour of airtime but typically ran for about 45 minutes after commercials and news segments.

Jerry The Convincer
Carter Ellsworth, a seemingly law-abiding marketing professional, becomes entangled in a drug smuggling operation through the persuasive efforts of his friend Stu and a mysterious figure named Jerry. Initially hesitant, Carter is convinced to participate in a maritime drug pickup, driven by a desire for excitement and financial gain. During the operation, a police officer named Bernard J. Talon interrupts their smuggling attempt, resulting in a confrontation that ends with the officer being killed.

Consumed by guilt, Carter sends the officer's widow an anonymous gift of $25,000 from his smuggling earnings. However, his involvement does not end there, as Jerry continues to pressure him into further illegal activities. Carter struggles with his conscience, alternating between wanting to confess and feeling trapped by his complicity in the officer's death.

Lieutenant Paris, investigating the murder, gradually pieces together the evidence against Carter, including the unique circumstances of the crime and Carter's suspicious behavior. Eventually, the lieutenant confronts Carter, offering him a chance to cooperate and escape further criminal involvement. The episode explores themes of moral compromise, the seductive nature of criminal excitement, and how ordinary people can be drawn into illegal activities through manipulation and gradual moral erosion.

Out Of The Mist
Harry Spears, a young man from the Bronx, discovers a passion for wildflowers and the countryside through his motorcycle adventures. While studying botany, he meets a mysterious young woman named Anne Campbell near an old railroad track. Intrigued by her delicate beauty and connection to a small white house in Miller's Ridge, Harry falls deeply in love with her and becomes obsessed with finding her.

After the death of his mentor Calvin Bell, Harry purchases the 'Lace House' in Miller's Ridge, hoping to reconnect with Anne. During a wedding rehearsal with Mrs. Peters, a ghostly apparition of a young Calvin Bell appears and leads Anne away. Mrs. Peters reveals a newspaper clipping that tells a tragic story: Ann Campbell died in a train derailment on September 15, 1912, while returning to marry Calvin Bell.

The episode explores themes of love, loss, and the supernatural, suggesting that Anne and Calvin are reunited in the afterlife. Harry, realizing the supernatural nature of his experience, puts the house up for sale and returns to the Bronx to teach botany. The story implies that the Lace House is haunted by the loving spirits of Ann and Calvin, who were separated by tragedy but ultimately found each other again.

CBS Radio Mystery Theater
CBS Radio Mystery Theater_79-09-05_(1010)_The Man In The Black Cap
John and Hester Morgan, a retired mining engineer and his wife, move to a historic house in Eastport Harbor, Maine, seeking a new life. The local real estate agent, Mr. Higgins, reveals the house's peculiar history of multiple ghosts, which he believes are brought by the inhabitants themselves. As they settle in, John becomes increasingly distant and secretive, working on a book about mining while displaying unusual behavior.

A mysterious lawsuit involving the sale of John's Lucky Penny mine emerges, involving a man named Elliot Harmon who allegedly shot himself after feeling cheated. Tensions rise between John and Hester as he becomes more aggressive and defensive, refusing to discuss the details of the lawsuit or his past. Strange occurrences begin to plague the household, including unexplained visitor sightings and John's increasingly erratic behavior.

The story culminates in John's disappearance, which coincides with Elliot Harmon's death. Upon investigation, both John and Harmon's bodies are discovered in an experimental shaft at the Lucky Penny mine, with Harmon wearing a distinctive black cap. The supernatural undertones suggest a form of spectral revenge, where Harmon's ghost seemingly pursued John until both of their deaths, fulfilling a karmic justice for perceived wrongs in their business dealings.
