Series: HE KNOWS YOUR NEED - Advent Series
Date: 24 December 2025 - Christmas Eve
Preacher: Rev Dave Miers
Scripture: Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah 9:6, Galatians 4:4-7
--
Jesus knows your need — but do you know what your biggest need actually is?
On Christmas Eve, we conclude the "He Knows Your Need" Advent series with a simple invitation: trade your life for Christ, because He traded His life for you.
Through Isaiah's prophecies and Paul's letter to the Galatians, we discover that the baby born in Bethlehem is Emmanuel — God with us — who comes not just to forgive our sins, but to offer us adoption as sons and daughters. No longer slaves to sin, ourselves, our screens, our shame, or death itself — but co-heirs with Christ, able to cry out "Abba, Father."
This is the trade of infinite worth: we give away our life lived in the shadow of death and receive the glorious life Christ came to bring.

Christmas is supposed to be light, but many of us carry something heavy: shame. Shame over personal failures we can't undo, and shame from wounds others have inflicted on us.
This Advent sermon addresses the weight of disgrace we carry and shows how Christmas is God's ultimate answer. Through Isaiah 54, we see three movements of God's redemptive work: he sees our shame fully, without minimising it; he meets our shame by drawing near through the Incarnation; and he replaces our shame with his everlasting love through Christ's sacrifice on the cross.
The message concludes with an invitation to come to Jesus and be defined not by shame, but by the steadfast love of God who paid the price for our freedom.

Christmas is supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year —but for many of us, it's one of the hardest — grief, disappointment, loneliness, exhaustion. We try to manufacture joy, but deep down we know it's just survival.
What if joy isn't something you create, but something God restores?
In Isaiah 35, God promises to transform our deserts, restore what's broken, and bring us home with everlasting joy. This isn't superficial happiness or forced cheerfulness — it's the settled gladness that comes when God reverses the curse, heals our wounds, and drives sorrow away forever.
Discover what Jesus does with your sorrow this Advent.

We're all fighting battles — conflict that won't resolve, anxiety that robs our sleep, the exhausting work of holding it all together. But the deepest battle? It's our battle with God.
In Isaiah 11, God gives his war-weary people a vision of peace. Not a fragile ceasefire, but peace rooted in a coming King. Humble origins, divine power, perfect justice, perfect peace, universal reach.
This King knows your battles. He knows what you really need. And he invites you to trade your battles for his peace.

Often we're held captive by our circumstances — weighed down, paralysed, even despairing. But Christmas invites us to see the forest from the trees and behold the bigger picture.
In this first sermon of our Advent series "He Knows Our Need," we explore Isaiah 40 and discover that God meets our deepest anguish with unshakeable hope. Through four powerful words — pardon, providence, promise, and peace — we see that God is greater than our circumstances.
Whether you're facing relationship breakdown, financial hardship, health crisis, or grief that won't lift, this message reminds us that our current circumstances don't define us. The incomparable, transcendent God is also the tender shepherd who became a sheep to save the sheep, offering strength to the weary and hope to the anguished.

Series: Burn Your Boats - The Book of Acts

The book of Acts ends with Paul in Rome, under house arrest for two years. But instead of a dramatic conclusion, we get something better - Paul "proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance."
This final sermon reveals why the early church was unstoppable: they made it all about Jesus. Every conversation, every hardship, every opportunity - Jesus was the hope, the fulfilment, and the king. The book ends, but the mission continues. Now it's our turn to burn our boats and keep going.

Paul stands before King Agrippa in the grand finale of his five trials. Surrounded by pomp, power, and prestige, this prisoner in chains does the unthinkable - he preaches the gospel. From his dramatic conversion on the Damascus road to his bold challenge to the king himself, Paul shows us what it means to seize every opportunity to speak about Jesus.
In this sermon, we explore three crucial practices for sharing our faith: speak clearly, speak often, and speak boldly. Because when God is with you, you're never in the minority - even when you're the only Christian in the room.

Paul stands before Governor Felix, accused of stirring up riots and profaning the temple. But Paul isn't defending his reputation—he's proclaiming the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His message cuts so deep that Felix becomes alarmed and sends him away, saying "When I find a convenient time, I'll summon you."
Two thousand years later, the gospel still stands under trial. Felix chose to procrastinate, endlessly delaying his response to Christ. We must not make the same fatal mistake. Today is the day to trust Christ and burn your boats.

Where do we find courage for mission when opposition comes? As Paul faces beatings, false accusations, and trials in Jerusalem, he discovers courage not in his own strength but in the presence of Jesus. Preached on International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church, this sermon reminds us that the same Jesus who stood with Paul in the barracks stands with persecuted believers around the world today—and stands with us as we testify about him. Whether you face fiery trials or everyday opposition, Jesus knows you, is with you, is for you, and isn't finished with you yet.

What's your one thing? The mission that drives everything you do? For the Apostle Paul, knowing Christ changed everything in his life. In this message from Acts 20:24, we explore how an encounter with Jesus transformed Paul from persecutor to preacher—and why he could say, "I do not account my life of any value." Discover what it means to burn your boats, hold your life loosely, and give yourself fully to the mission Jesus has for you. Whether you're exploring Christianity or have followed Jesus for years, this message will challenge you: Has knowing Christ changed everything?

What difference does the gospel actually make? In Acts 19, Paul's ministry in Ephesus reveals how the good news of Jesus transforms individuals and disrupts entire societies. When hearts are captured by Christ's beauty, idols lose their power—personally and publicly. The word of the Lord continues to increase and prevail mightily.

In Athens, Paul saw idols everywhere, but instead of walking away, he was moved with compassion and boldly proclaimed Jesus as the true and living God. Some mocked, others believed, but the gospel kept turning lives upside down. This message invites us to see Brisbane through the same eyes: to feel what Paul felt, do what Paul did, and trust what God still does — saving people through the risen Christ.

The story of Ruth reaches its beautiful conclusion. After so much emptiness and risk, God brings redemption and restoration. In Ruth 4, we see Boaz step forward as the true kinsman-redeemer, paying the price, securing the future, and turning bitterness into joy. Tim shows how this surprising ending points beyond Boaz to Jesus, our ultimate Redeemer, who brings the outsider in and fills our emptiness with grace.

Ruth’s story begins in the dark days of the judges — an age of famine, faithlessness, and brokenness. Yet into this emptiness steps an outsider who clings to God’s people and God’s promises. In Paul’s first recorded sermon, we hear the sweeping story of God’s grace fulfilled in Jesus — the promised Saviour, crucified and raised. Through him comes true freedom: freedom from sin, from shame, and from the impossible burden of trying to save ourselves. Some believe. Some reject. But the mission rolls on. And the invitation still stands — to step into the story, to receive forgiveness, and to live in the freedom only Jesus can give.

When opposition comes, where will you turn? In Acts 12, a king of this world flexes—James is executed, Peter is jailed, and Herod basks in applause. But the church answers with its true weapon: earnest prayer. Walk through the chapter’s three acts—Martyred, Miracle, Multiplied—and watch the great reversal: the chapter opens with James dead, Peter imprisoned, and Herod triumphant; it closes with Herod dead, Peter free, and “the word of God increased and multiplied.” This message presses the Burn Your Boats call to go all-in with Jesus: trust the risen King, endure opposition, and pray like it matters.

Acts 9:32–11:30 marks a decisive breakthrough in the story of Acts. Jesus is alive and at work through miracles of healing and resurrection. His call to repentance extends beyond Israel, demonstrating that even Gentiles are welcomed by grace. The church is stretched to break old boundaries and embrace those once considered outsiders. This is the Acts 1:8 trajectory unfolding — from Jerusalem, to Judea and Samaria, and now a key moment as the gospel begins reaching the ends of the earth.
