Going on a cruise is so much fun, until you get hit with a surprise bill for stuff you didn't even know you were paying for. Let's talk about the sneaky charges that often catch first time cruisers off guard, like Wi-Fi costs and upcharge meals.
So, I've learned from my experience cruising that a lot of first-timers think Wi-Fi on a cruise ship is free, like at bars or hotels on land. But that's not the case most of the time.
There are a few exceptions such as NCL have a limited number of minutes included with their Free at Sea package. Disney includes WhatsApp and Facebook messenger for free too, but their other WiFi packages are a bit pricey. King of WiFi is Virgin Voyages who give you free and unlimited internet throughout your cruise.
When it comes to Wi-Fi on a cruise ship, it's hit or miss depending on where you're sailing. If you're cruising through a Norway with big mountains all around, don't count on a perfect connection. To get online, you usually have to buy a Wi-Fi package that suits your needs.
Just a heads up, when it comes to Wi-Fi on cruise ships, the price is usually per gadget, not per room. So, if you and your cabin mate both want to use your phones, you'll have to pay for each one separately. But don't worry, you can upgrade your Wi-Fi package anytime during your cruise for more flexibility and convenience.
Lately, Starlink technology has completely changed the game when it comes to internet on cruise ships. Starlink, a system of satellites in Low Earth Orbit, offers super fast and reliable internet even in really out-of-the-way places. Compared to traditional satellites way up high in space, Starlink satellites are much closer to Earth, making the connection stronger and faster.
Personally, if there's going to be quite a few port days, I use my roaming or local WiFi.
Let’s leave the ship behind for a few hours and head ashore.
Each cruise line has a bunch of trips you can join when you dock at different ports. It's a great way to explore the area and have some fun on land. You can check out historical spots, cool local places, or even go kayaking or take a boat tour.
The trips have different levels of intensity from adventurous to calm, so you can choose the one that suits you best. They can be short, like just a couple of hours, or longer, like around eight hours! They can be a bit pricey, but the good thing is, if you're running late and might miss the ship, they'll wait for you.
Of course, if you just want to wander around the port and take in the sights, you don't need to go on an excursion. Just check how far the ship docks to the town and if they'll be putting on free shuttle buses.
If it's your first cruise, it can seem a bit strange being asked to pay a tip upfront. You wouldn't book a table at Pizza Express and be asked to leave a tip before you've even been there. Tips can sneak up on new cruisers and end up costing a lot of money. They charge tips per person, not per cabin.
If you're sailing with one of the big American cruise lines, chances are you'll be have a daily service charge added to your bill unless you've pre-paid. You can go to reception and ask for them to be removed, but it can be embarrassing.
Some cruise lines that automatically add tips to your bill are Disney, NCL, Royal Caribbean & Celebrity.
I was on a Disney Cruise and had already paid gratuities, but they still handed me envelopes to fill with cash for the waiters. It made me feel so awkward!
Generally, the British cruise lines won't add on tips. In the UK, we don't really do the whole big tipping thing, we like to just pay for everything upfront if we can. Cruise lines that don't do tips are MSC, P&O and Virgin Voyages.
Upcharge restaurants are becoming increasingly popular on cruise ships. These restaurants, known as "speciality restaurants," typically require an additional fee for dining.
Some restaurants have a fixed cover charge per person, while others operate on an a la carte basis, similar to restaurants on land.
But let's be real here, you don't have to splash out on fancy food onboard a cruise. There's plenty of grub included in your package.
If you're feeling fancy and want to push the boat out (pun intended), go ahead and book a table at one of these speciality restaurants.
You can find all sorts of dishes here. From Indian to Mexican, juicy steaks, sushi, seafood, and even vegetarian and vegan options. There's something for every taste bud.
There are no upcharge restaurants onboard Virgin Voyages so you can dine where you like without splashing out any more.
So you think cruising is all about kicking back on the deck and soaking in the sea air? Think again! From personal experience, I can tell you that there's a whole smorgasbord of onboard activities that might just cost you a pretty penny, bumping up the total bill for your cruise. Let's take a deep dive into those extra activities and see how they can put a dent in your cruise budget.
There are things to do on the cruise that are covered in the price you paid – but then there are the ones that will cost you extra.
Check out the cruise app or the daily schedule, and watch out for those two words that make everyone cringe: "additional charges". On Royal Caribbean, you can ride the surfing simulator or maybe play a game of laser tag.
The spa is also somewhere you'll be able to relax and spend a bit of money too. Just watch out for the upsells. If you go in for a free treatment or check-up, you'll be recommended a ton of extras that can add up to being a small fortune.
For example, on a recent Disney cruise, we took part in a mixology class. It was a lot of fun and got to same the drinks we made.

With a length of around 1,094 feet and a passenger capacity of over 4,000, the Norwegian Bliss offers a plethora of amenities and entertainment options. From thrilling water slides to world-class dining, the Norwegian Bliss provides a truly immersive cruising experience.
The Norwegian Joy is a vibrant and exciting ship that caters to guests of all ages. With a length of approximately 1,094 feet and a passenger capacity of over 3,800, this ship offers a wide range of activities and entertainment choices. From exhilarating go-kart racetracks to peaceful spa retreats, the Norwegian Joy has something for everyone.
4th on the list, With a length of around 1,069 feet and a passenger capacity of over 4,200, the Norwegian Escape is a spectacular ship that guarantees an unforgettable holiday. Guests onboard the Norwegian Escape can enjoy a wide range of dining options, including specialty restaurants and casual eateries. The ship also offers thrilling activities such as aqua parks, water slides, and Broadway-style shows.
Norwegian Epic is known for its innovative design and impressive features. With a length of approximately 1,081 feet and a passenger capacity of over 4,100, this ship offers a unique cruising experience. The Norwegian Epic features a variety of entertainment options, including live shows, comedy clubs, and a thrilling casino. Guests can also indulge in a wide range of culinary delights at the ship’s numerous dining venues.
Joint 6th are Getaway and Breakaway. Breakaway set sail in 2013 and Getaway a year later. Both boasts a whopping 145,655 gross tons. These magnificent ships stretches 1,068 feet (326 meters) in length and ranks as the joint 6th largest among Norwegian Cruise Line’s fleet of 19 active cruise ships. It’s part of NCL’s Breakaway Class, offering an unforgettable cruise experience. With a full capacity of 5,971 passengers, including 3,963 vacationers and 1,646 staff members, there’s plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the voyage. The Norwegian Getaway and Breakaway also feature a grand total of 2,008 staterooms for its guests’ comfort and enjoyment.
Joint 7th are Viva and Prima. Prima launched in 2022 and Viva a year later in 2023. This impressive ship stretches 965 feet long (294 meters) and ranks as the 7th largest vessel among Norwegian Cruise Line’s 19 active cruise ships. As part of NCL’s Prima Class, it can accommodate a full capacity of 5,596 passengers, including 3,950 vacationers and 1,388 staff members.
The NCL Jade was built in 2006 and is a whopping 93,558 gross tons. This bad boy measures 965 feet (294 meters) long. It’s part of NCL’s Jewel Class, and when it’s party time, the Norwegian Jade can hold 3,593 people. That’s 2,402 guests and 1,037 crew members. Oh, and it’s got a whopping 1,191 staterooms, so there’s plenty of room for all the fun.
Pearl and Gem are joint 9th. The NCL Gem was built in 2007 and is a whopping 93,530 gross tons. It stretches out to 965 feet (294 meters) and ranks as the joint 9th among Norwegian Cruise Line’s fleet of 19 cruise ships. It’s part of NCL’s Jewel Class. When it’s packed to the brim, the Norwegian Gem can hold 3,591 passengers – 2,394 vacationers and 1,070 staff members.
The NCL Jewel was built in 2005 and is 93,502 gross tons in size. This magnificent ship stretches out to 965 feet (294 meters) and proudly sits as the 10th gem in Norwegian Cruise Line’s fleet of 19 active cruise ships. It’s part of the prestigious NCL Jewel Class, and when it’s fully packed, it can accommodate a grand total of 3,573 people. That includes 2,376 lucky vacationers and 1,069 hardworking staff members. With a grand total of 1,197 staterooms, the Norwegian Jewel is ready to welcome guests for a truly luxurious cruise experience.
Get ready to set sail on the magnificent NCL Dawn, built in 2002 and boasting a massive size of 92,250 gross tons. This impressive ship stretches 965 feet (294 meters) in length, ranking as the 11th among Norwegian Cruise Line’s fleet of 19 active cruise ships. It’s part of the esteemed Dawn Class and can accommodate a whopping 3,372 passengers at full capacity, with 2,340 lucky sailors and 1,032 dedicated staff members. There are a total of 1,032 staterooms on board to ensure a comfortable and unforgettable journey.
The NCL Star was built in 2001 and has a total weight of 91,740 gross tons. It spans 965 feet (294 meters) in length and is the 12th largest among Norwegian Cruise Line’s 19 active cruise ships. It belongs to NCL’s Dawn Class. When fully occupied, the Norwegian Star can accommodate 3,524 guests, including 2,348 passengers and 1,031 crew members. The ship has a total of 1,176 staterooms.
the impressive NCL Pride of America, which was built in 2005 and boasts a massive size of 80,439 gross tons. This incredible ship spans 920 feet (280 meters) in length and is the 13th vessel among Norwegian Cruise Line’s 19 active cruise ships. Part of the NCL’s Pride of America Class, this ship can accommodate a total of 3,280 passengers, including 2,186 guests and 927 dedicated staff members. With a total of 1,094 staterooms, the Norwegian Pride of America offers plenty of space for everyone on board.
NCL Sun, a ship that was built in 2001 and measures a total of 78,309 gross tons. This impressive vessel spans 848 feet (258 meters) in length. the Sun has the capacity to accommodate 2,904 passengers, including 1,936 guests and 906 crew members. With a total of 968 staterooms, this ship is ready to provide an unforgettable and comfortable cruising experience for all its guests.
The NCL Sky was built in 1999 and has a total size of 77,104 gross tons. It measures 832 feet (254 meters) in length and is the 2nd smallest ship in the Norwegian fleet. It belongs to NCL’s Sun Class. When fully occupied, the Norwegian Sky can accommodate 3,006 passengers, including 2,004 holiday makers and 899 crew members.
And lastly, The NCL Spirit was built in 1998 and has a total size of 75,904 gross tons. It measures 880 feet (268 meters) in length and is the smallest of the 19 active cruise ships in Norwegian Cruise Line’s fleet. The ship belongs to NCL’s Spirit Class and can accommodate 3,026 passengers at full capacity, with 2,018 vacationers and 912 staff members.

When I got on board the Valiant Lady, I could feel the energy right away. It was like a big party with everyone having a great time! There were so many things to do, like chatting at the bars, playing fun games, or even playing old-school video games. It was non-stop fun!
You know what was really cool? The ship was buzzing with this exciting energy that made you want to join in. And if you were into making new friends, this was the perfect place. There were so many chances to hang out and have a blast with other guests.
What made Valiant Lady stand out were all the fun twists they added to the usual stuff. Sure, you might have played games on other cruises, but here, they made it extra exciting with surprises!
Thinking back on my trip, one thing that really stood out was how everyone was welcome and accepted on Valiant Lady. And our fellow sailors were a great range of the young and the young at heart. I was speaking to a lady who was 84 years young and she was having the time of her life!
Right from the start, you could see how diverse the performers were. Each night's show was a celebration of different cultures and talents. From different parts of the world to all different sexualities, everyone just fitted in nicely. It was so cool to see everyone being represented!
And you know what else? There are even bathrooms for everyone, no matter who you are. It was nice to see the ship making sure everyone felt respected and comfortable.
Let me tell you, the crew on Valiant Lady were like sunshine on a cloudy day. Their happiness and excitement were so contagious! Whether you were watching a show, having dinner, or just walking around, their positive vibes made everything more fun.
And you could see how well they all worked together. It was like they were one big team, making sure everything ran smoothly. Their teamwork was really impressive!
Talking to the crew felt like chatting with old pals. They were so interested in making sure I had a great time on board. Even if there were a few little bumps in the road, their upbeat attitude made everything better.
From the cheerful "good mornings" to the helpful service in the restaurants, the crew really went above and beyond to make sure everyone had a memorable trip. Their dedication to making guests happy was really something special.
I was so excited to find out about all the cool entertainment options on Virgin Voyages' Valiant Lady. They really know how to shake things up when it comes to onboard fun!
I could feel the energy buzzing all around. And let me tell you, the entertainment was unlike anything I'd ever seen! They had these daring shows that were a bit risque but so much fun to watch. And guess what? You could even join in on the action!
But that's not all. They also had these super quirky workout classes that made exercising feel like a party. Picture this: '80s-themed aerobics with crew members leading the way. It was a blast!
The best part? Scarlet night is the biggest party at sea. Everyone got involved and some of us even ended up in the pool. Fully clothed!
First off, the cabins were like something from the future! They had these lights that could change colours, and you could even use tablets to order room service or watch movies. It was like having your own little tech paradise!
And the design? It was so sleek and modern. The furniture was all cool and contemporary, and they even had these fun pops of colour that made everything feel so lively.
Even though the cabins weren't huge, they made up for it with all the neat stuff inside. They had everything you needed, like shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel. Plus, the showers had doors, which made them feel extra fancy!
Now, let's talk about the beds. They were called Seabeds, and get this—they could turn into sofas! So, during the day, you could lounge around and chill out. And if you had a balcony cabin, you could even kick back in a hammock!
One of the coolest things about Valiant Lady was its dining options. They weren't just your ordinary restaurants—they were like stepping into a whole new world! From funky experiences to secret bars, every meal was a fun surprise that made my taste buds dance with joy.
And let me tell you about the exclusive events! They were so special, like mixology classes and fancy nights out. It made me feel like a VIP, getting to be part of these unforgettable moments.
I had to check out this one restaurant called Razzle Dazzle, and boy, was it a treat! They had this secret menu that wasn't so secret anymore, but it was still full of surprises. Every dish was inspired by the places we were sailing to, making it a real culinary adventure!
And get this—the ship even had little nods to its history! From markers showing how it was built to the way the cabins were numbered, you could really feel the craftsmanship and love that went into making Valiant Lady.
I also loved how the ship was eco-friendly. They gave us these cool bracelets made from recycled ocean plastic called "The Band." They weren't the fanciest things to look at, but they were super handy for opening doors and buying stuff onboard. Plus, it felt good knowing we were helping the planet!
