Stem Cell Executive Fined for Misleading Iowans
Iowa Judge Orders Stem Cell Executive to Pay Nearly $1M for Misleading ConsumersAn Iowa judge has ordered Travis Broughton, an Omaha stem cell executive, and his two companies to pay nearly $1 million for misleading Iowans about the effectiveness of their regenerative medicine injections. The ruling found that Broughton and his companies violated the Iowa Consumer Fraud Act by claiming their expensive treatments could cure chronic conditions and reverse aging and disease. The judge also noted that most Iowa consumers received exosomes, cell fragments, rather than the advertised stem cells, and that Broughton failed to provide scientific evidence for his claims. The judgment includes over $810,000 in restitution to 76 Iowa consumers, $160,000 in civil penalties, and an additional $20,000 in enhanced penalties for targeting older consumers.

DART Revamps Bus System, Bondurant Exits
DART Revamps Bus System: Fewer Routes, More Frequent ServiceThe Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) has approved a major overhaul of its bus system, reducing routes but increasing frequency on remaining ones. This aims to create a more reliable, all-day service, though some areas will see reduced coverage and longer walks to stops.Meanwhile, Bondurant, Pleasant Hill, and Grimes have decided to leave DART due to low ridership, with Bondurants departure effective July 1, 2027. Bondurants Mayor, Doug Elrod, cited low usage and lack of value as reasons for the decision. However, both Bondurant and Pleasant Hill are interested in maintaining paratransit service. The new DART system will replace 27 current routes with 10 main routes, focusing on all-day service on busy streets. Four core corridors will have buses every 15 minutes during most of the day. Changes are set to begin in June 2026, with new on-demand microtransit zones launching in the fall. This is DARTs first major redesign since its formation in 2006, expected to increase accessible destinations by 15% for the average Des Moines metro resident within 45 minutes on weekdays.

Iowa Rivers: Persistent Nitrate Levels in Fall 2025
Nitrate levels in Iowa rivers and drinking water remained high through fall 2025, following a wet spring and near-record concentrations in summer. Des Moines Water Works reported elevated levels in central Iowas water sources, leading to a lawn watering ban. While the water treatment system hasnt been needed, the situation highlights the need for consistent water quality monitoring. Experts attribute the issue to precipitation, livestock operations, and fertilizer applications, suggesting that 2025s conditions may reflect more typical hydrologic conditions for Iowa. A unified call for better data and funding for monitoring systems has emerged, emphasizing the importance of accurate, accessible information for addressing Iowas long-term water quality challenges.
