Rusiñol mostra la burgesia barcelonina encarnada en aquesta família, propietaris d'una petita merceria i el conflicte d'aquesta classe social amb el fill del senyor Esteve, en Ramonet, que vol separar-se de la tradició familiar i ser artista. - Santiago Rusiñol (Barcelona, 1861 – Madrid, 1931) va ser un artista polifacètic: escriptor, pintor, periodista i dramaturg. Va néixer en una família d'industrials tèxtils i tot i ser l'hereu, ja es va interessar per la pintura des de l'adolescència. Després de casar-se i ser pare, Rusiñol va deixar la seva empresa en mans del seu germà i es va dedicar a viatjar per Europa. A partir del 1888 va començar a escriure i l'any 1893, després de la seva ruptura familiar que va durar deu anys, es va instal·lar a Sitges i va crear un estudi que es convertí en un punt de referència modernista. Es va consolidar com a artista i escriptor, amb més de deu obres literàries, i va rebre diversos premis i reconeixements, com el títol de sociétarie del Saló de París. Al morir, el govern republicà va ordenar una cerimònia fúnebre oficial a la capital.
