That old sofa sitting in your family room or basement play area may be exposing you and your family to toxic chemicals. This according to a warning from the California Department of Public Health that accompanies publication of their studies in the journal Environmental Pollution.
Foam-filled furniture made before 2014 contains dangerous levels of toxic flame retardants. Removing and replacing such furniture cuts the level of polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PBDEs, in the bloodstream by about 50 percent in about 17 months. These organic chemicals are linked with cancer risk, hormone disruption, and impaired brain development in children.

Many think that a nice tan acquired at the tanning parlor makes you look healthy, but spending time under those UV lights may triple your risk of cooking up a deadly skin cancer. Dermatologists at Northwestern Medicine and the University of California-San Francisco now report this fact in the journal Science Advances after reviewing medical records from about 6,000 people and using single-cell DNA sequencing on skin biopsies from tanning-bed users and non-users.
The tabulated data shows that people frequenting tanning beds have close to three times the risk of melanoma compared with non-users. That risk persists even after adjusting for sunburn history and familial predisposition. The DNA analysis reveals that the skin’s pigment creating cells, melanocytes, carried nearly twice as many mutations in people who tanned indoors vs outdoors. Most concerning is, these cancer-linked mutations appear not just on light-exposed skin, but also on normal-appearing areas like the lower back and buttocks that rarely see sunlight.
These findings demonstrate that tanning beds are more dangerous than natural sunlight. They not only directly contradict the claims of the indoor tanning industry, but they also begin to explain why melanoma is increasingly seen in younger adults, especially women under 50 with a history of indoor tanning. If you are sensitive to gluten, or, worse yet, have celiac disease, you need to steer clear of biodegradable, compostable dishware and utensils. Pharmacy researchers at the University of Seville now report in an American Chemical Society peer-reviewed journal that certain biodegradable plates and cups contain wheat-related proteins that leak into presumably gluten-free foods.
Six of the 8 biodegradable tableware brands contained wheat. Although plate-borne wheat proteins were transferred to solid food when their concentration were high, liquids served in the biodegradable cups readily picked up the wheat antigens. Transfer of the antigens was higher when the food and the tableware were heated and was related to the time during which foods contacted the dishes and cups.
Unfortunately, biodegradable, compostable products are not required to list their ingredients on packaging. Given this gap, if you have a wheat or gluten allergy or celiac disease, best to avoid these products altogether at the takeout counter. Not all biodegradable contain wheat, but you don’t want to play dish roulette.

Utilizing artificial intelligence to help discover the very nature of the process by which viruses enter human cells, bioengineers and virologists at Washington State University have uncovered an “on-off” switch that can completely block viral intrusion. Their study, published in the journal Nanoscale, focused on herpes viruses which utilize a “fusion” protein to enter human and animal cells.
The researchers combined AI-driven analysis, high-resolution molecular simulations, and lab experiments to sift through thousands of protein interactions to pinpoint the single amino acid that is the regulator for herpesvirus entry. When this amino acid was altered, the herpesvirus could not fuse with or enter cells. This eliminates infection with viral reproduction before it even begins.
We don’t know if this on-off switch is universal or herpesvirus-specific. It is, though, a powerful demonstration that machine learning can search a large body of biologic processes to find unique solutions to therapeutic problems…..someday soon.

A bacterium found in the gut of frogs has powerful anti-cancer effects. Researchers at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology report that the bacterium Ewingella americana, found in gastrointestinal tract of Japanese tree frogs, completely eliminates cancers in mice with few if any side effects. This bacterium was one of 45 initially isolated from frogs, newts, and lizards. After screening, it stood out due to its powerful anticancer effects.
Using a mouse model of colorectal cancer, studies showed that a single intravenous dose too his bacterium eradicated 100 percent of cancers. This bacterial treatment outperforms chemotherapy and immune checkpoint drugs.
These frog bacteria destroy cancer cells using two mechanisms. First, the bacteria naturally target and multiply inside tumors killing them. Second, these bacteria spark an intense immune response that harnesses T cells, B cells, and their inflammatory cell fellow travelers that help the body destroy any remaining cancer cells.
Even better, these frog bacteria are well tolerated by mice. The clear rapidly from the bloodstream, do not colonize healthy organs, cause only brief inflammation, and create no long-term general toxicity during two months of follow up monitoring.
This exciting therapeutic possibility is still in the early stages of development. Still ahead is much more preclinical research before any clinic trials can begin. Even so, the concept of using select biologic material from other species to eradicate treatment-resistant human disease could lead to spectacular outcomes….someday soon.

Reducing your blood sugar readings and your A1C level down to a normal range can cut your risk of serious heart problems by more than half if you have already been classified as a pre-diabetic. This is the conclusion of a multi-national collaborative study just published in the journal The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology.
Researchers found that those who reversed their prediabetic states had a 58% lower risk of dying from heart disease or being hospitalized for heart failure. Rates of heart attack and stroke were also cut by more than 40%. The study also demonstrates that exercise, weight loss, and healthy eating, while helpful, do not statistically improve risks of heart attacks or early death for prediabetics unless their blood sugar levels return to normal
More than one billion people worldwide and over one-third of U.S. adults have prediabetes. This study suggests that vigorous efforts to reduce your blood sugar as well as lowering blood pressure, reducing cholesterol, and quitting smoking are all part of a successful effort to keep your heart healthy and pumping.

The advent of CAR-T cell therapy has revolutionized the oncologic management of blood cell cancers that readily display their tumor-specific antigens. Solid cancerous tumors that grow in major organs including the breast, lungs, and the liver are so closely packed that their tumor-specific markers are hidden preventing the modified T killer cells from attacking them. For this reason CAR-T strategies have been ineffective.
University of Southern California bioengineers have a solution. Using focused ultrasound, they are able to literally shake and prime solid tumor cells to produce and reveal a common tumor marker CD19 that CAR-T killer cells can hone in on and destroy their target. The ultrasound can be precisely aimed in an effort to restrict the immunotherapeutic effect to a localized zone.
The researchers conducted studies on tumor organoids and mouse models. This ultrasonic trigger led to strong, localized immune attacks even when only 10–15% of tumor cells were primed to produce the CD19 marker.
While this approach has not yet been tried in the clinic, the work represents a major step toward making CAR-T killer cell therapy more effective for solid tumors.

A state of the art micro-fluidic chip can quantitate the cancer-cell killing effectiveness of chemotherapeutic agents against one of the deadliest brain cancers, glioblastoma. So say Northwestern University neurosurgical oncologists working in collaboration with University of Michigan bioengineers in a Nature Communications published tudy.
Leet’s talks a look at how this chip strategy works. When the albumin-bound paclitaxel chemotherapeutic agent penetrates the blood-brain barrier with the help of focused ultrasound and kills glioblastoma tumor cells, the dying cells release extracellular vesicles and particles into the bloodstream. The novel microchip, named the GlioExoChip, capably captures these released particles permitting their quantitation and the estimation of chemotherapeutic killing effectiveness after each drug infusion.
This technique provides a near-immediate estimation of treatment effectiveness with only a blood draw. Compare this with the need to wait months to look for tumor shrinkage on MR imaging. If any given agent is effective, treatment continues. If not, another agent is chosen.
Once the precision and specificity of this technique is confirmed in larger clinical studies, the GlioExoChip will become available for routine use.

From the Mayo Clinic comes a study showing that smartwatches can give parents a powerful new tool to anticipate severe tantrums in young children with emotional and behavioral disorders. An early warning permits timely deployment of preventive measures before outbursts spiral out of control.
The Mayo psychiatric and experimental therapeutics investigators report in JAMA Network Open their development of a smartwatch-based alert system that can be worn by children ages 3 to 7. The watch detects elevating heart rates and excessive movements, sends that data to an AI-powered smartphone app that predicts if a tantrum is developing, and promptly transmits timely warning alerts to parents.
A randomized clinical trial studied 50 families over 16 weeks. It demonstrated that parents using this smartwatch system were able to intervene within an average of four seconds after an alert. This early intervention cut the duration of tantrums by half compared with standard therapy.
This early warning system may prevent many parents having to drag their kids out of restaurants and stores.

Those who regularly vape with e-cigarettes have a 53% higher risk of being cut down by a heart attack. This the conclusion of a meta-analysis by researchers at India’s National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research that is published in BMC Public Health Journal.
The study pooled data from 12 observational studies, covering more than 430,000 people for heart attacks and over one million for stroke, and carefully adjusted for traditional cigarette smoking.
The risk of eventual heart attack and/or strokes were even higher for those who began using e-cigarettes as a means of quitting conventional cigarette smoking. That risk is 2.5-fold higher for heart attacks and 73% higher for strokes. While vaping may release fewer toxic chemicals into the body than smoking, other studies have shown that the heated vaping liquids contain agents that damage blood vessels.
This study raises concerns about the use of e-cigarettes as a pathway to quit smoking. The good news is that are are many other ways to kick the tobacco and nicotine habits.
