Game Setup

Last time on Tyranny of Dragons: The heroes quickly move in to save Tinius Reathrom, the noble they ran over after he beat his horse. His guards, Yulon Kax, a knight, and Zarus Celsun, a mage, came out to see the heroes over his body. They tried to put the horse out of its misery, but the heroes brought it back and returned to camp. Since Li’high abandoned her bodyguard post with Edhelri Lewel, she was fired. The deceased Achreny Ulyeltin wagon led by his wagon driver fired the guards assigned to it, since they just wandered off, abandoning their post. Wagon master Ackrr Gaelstrum demanded that K’ithriss stay with his wagon rather than keep running off with his former murder suspect companions. He refuses to entertain the idea of hiring any of them as they are untrustworthy, if not complicit in the death of their former Wagon Master Achreny. Their collective reputation with the caravan is at an all time low, and with no options available, they follow along as the caravan continues toward its destination. Garrick leveraged his hunting to ingratiate himself with Ackrr and while out hunting spotted two creatures tracking the caravan from high in the sky. The heroes saw one wagon's collateral crash onto the ground who hurriedly cleaned it up, but it was clear they were hiding something. The heroes planned to investigate further but abandoned the notion after hearing about hobgoblins pinning a wagon down on the road ahead. They investigated and eliminated the wagon threat, bringing one of its guards to their caravan to buy a horse, and healing their noble wagon master. As they continued down the road, ettercaps and giant spiders attacked and ran away with one of the wagon's horses. The heroes went in pursuit and discovered their lair. After a lengthy battle they saved the horse and returned it to the wagon master. Their reputation has improved incredibly with these acts of support and protection to the caravan. Then the two Perytons attacked, trying to kill a mother and child. The heroes fought them off, killing them, and that is where we pick up today's session.

Review

Icefall by Douglas Niles

* Red Wand Tribe, Centaurs of the Plains of Dust

This was a great story about a centaur who was out tracking near the icewall. He discovered polar bear tracks that were headed back toward his tribe, so he followed them when a storm began to rise. He saw the tracks veer away but since they were too close to his home, he decided to continue to pursue and kill this menage. He saw human tracks tracking the bear as well, and the storm kept increasing in intensity. Soon his visibility was slim to none and he finally came across the human who relented and was returning home. He wished the centaur good luck on his hunt and left. Now that the centaur had the bear to himself, he continued on. The weather was getting to even his tough form, and suddenly the bear was there. They fought as two predators in a storm with limited vision. The centaur was wounded but eventually killed the bear. He was debating on skinning it when a massive white form flew overhead. He suddenly realised the source of the storm was the dragon, and he knew that he had to get back to his tribe. He began to turn back and his wounds were too great. He slumped down and thought of his mate, as life faded away in the freezing cold. It was so good to read  a story that focuses on the elemental nature of these dragon overlords and the helplessness the mortals of the land are in their presence. The dragon was even named, only inferred and I knew exactly what was happening. The fear in the centaur was palpable as well. Truly great.

Legacy by Nancy Varian Berberick

* Slean Brae, hill dwarf

* Leial,

* Yahn Cooper, little girl, treated by Leial

* Wila Cooper, Yahn’s wife

* Kern, their boy

* Azure, youngest daughter

* Cour, town

* Red Sickness

Holy shit this story got to me. This author is great! It’s about a herbalist named Leial who came from a town where her family all died from a nameless disease. She was able to heal a few people with herbs if she got to them soon enough, but most died.

Maquesta Kar-Thon

Welcome to another DragonLance Saga episode. My name is Adam and today I am going to talk about the pirate Maquesta Kar-Thon. I would like to take a moment and thank the DLSaga YouTube members and Patreon patrons, and invite you to consider becoming a member or patron by following the links in the description below. You can even pick up Dragonlance gaming materials using my affiliate links. I am referencing DLA Dragonlance Adventures and the War of the Lance sourcebooks, including Dragonlance Chronicles, Maquesta Kar-Thon and The Dragons of Chaos novels for this information. If I leave anything out or misspeak, please leave a comment below!

Discussion

It would be easy to see Maquesta Kar-Thon as little more than a swashbuckling captain — a half-elven pirate who dared to sail the Blood Sea of Istar during the darkest ages of Krynn. That’s certainly how the bards like to tell it: the daring smuggler who outwitted Dragonarmies and wrestled her own fate from the jaws of the Maelstrom. But I believe Maquesta — or “Maq” as she preferred to be called — was far more than that. She is, in many ways, the embodiment of Krynn’s Age of Despair: a survivor of legacy, betrayal, and loss, carving her own name upon the waves of a world still recovering from divine wrath.

Born in 326 AC, Maquesta was the daughter of two worlds that could not have been further apart. Her father, Melas Kar-Thon, was a proud Ergothian sailor — a man of the sea, rough around the edges but loyal to his dream. Her mother, Mi-al, was a Silvanesti elf — a woman of grace and secrecy, living in hiding aboard the Perechon, the ship that was both their home and their livelihood. For four brief years, this family defied both land and law, sailing the Blood Sea in quiet defiance of the prejudices that divided elf and man. But history has little patience for forbidden peace.

Life on the Blood Sea of Istar was not easy, especially for elves. They were hunted, blamed for ancient sins and the Cataclysm. A bounty was placed upon their heads. Mi-al vanished without a trace, and in desperation, Melas altered his daughter’s very appearance, shortening her ears so she might pass as human. Imagine that — your heritage literally cut away, your identity reshaped by fear. It was the first betrayal Maquesta ever suffered, though it would not be the last.

By the age of twelve, Maquesta was already a sailor in truth. Her father taught her every rope and current of the Blood Sea. By twelve, she could chart a course blindfolded. And when she first took the Perechon’s helm alone in 338 AC, with her father watching proudly from the deck, Maquesta was no longer a child. She was born to the sea — as though the god Zeboim herself had marked her for some strange destiny.

But destiny is rarely kind. In 344 AC, her father made a bet — one last, desperate gamble. He lost. The Perechon was sold to a minotaur, Attat Es-Divaq, a merchant-lord of the islands of Mithas and Kothas.

DM101: Game Preparation – Gaming

Welcome to Dungeon Mastering 101, my Dungeon Mastering course based on over 30 years of experience. In this series I will share my failures and successes and the lessons learned along the way. In this episode, I will cover game preparation. This includes knowing the player’s characters, non-player’s characters, overpreparation, and actively avoiding railroads.

Intro

Welcome to my second DragonLance Saga, Dungeon Mastering 101 episode! It is Palast, Darkember the 9th, my name is Adam and today I am continuing my Dragonlance Gaming series all about Dungeon Mastering. The number one complaint I hear about the Dragonlance Modules is the railroading they present. I will make the argument that with proper game preparation, railroading can feel more like an open world exploration.

Discussion

1. Know the Story You’re Telling — But Don’t Marry It

* Preparation begins with clarity of intent.

* Understand what kind of story you’re running — heroic fantasy, dark intrigue, political drama, exploration, or something else — and design your prep around that tone.

* However, don’t over-script the story.

* The best DMs plan situations, not outcomes. The players’ choices will take the story places you never expected — and that’s the magic of D&D.

* Know the Setting, era, and world

2. Start Small, Expand Naturally

* New DMs often over-prep.

* You don’t need a fully fleshed-out world map, economic systems, or the pantheon of gods.

* Start with one region, one central conflict, and one memorable NPC.

* As the story grows, expand your world outward, responding to the players’ actions.

* Organic worldbuilding always feels more authentic than forced detail-dumping.

* Let the players’ suspicions or thoughts in game define the outcome.

* It makes them feel involved in the storytelling

3. Establish the Campaign’s Tone and Expectations

* Before the first session, discuss the tone of your game with your players — heroic, gritty, cinematic, or tragic?

* Let them know the kinds of challenges and moral dilemmas they might face.

* Setting expectations up front avoids disappointment later and helps guide how you prepare each adventure.

4. Prepare NPCs with Purpose, Not Paragraphs

* Every non-player character doesn’t need a novel-length backstory.

* Focus on role and motivation: what does this NPC want, how do they go about getting it, and how might they interact with the players?

* Give them one memorable trait — a nervous stutter, a distinctive piece of jewelry, or a strange laugh — and you’ll bring them to life more effectively than any long biography.

* IF the players ask, be creative and improvise, then flesh out details after the session

* Tank notes!

5. Build Encounters with Flexibility

Dragons are myths in only some worlds.

Five writers from four different settings are brought together in this beautiful trade paperback book. There is one story each from the foremost authors in the Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, Magic: The Gathering and Eberron worlds. Preceding each story is a gorgeous full-color plate illustration of a dragon, done in the distinctive styles of each setting by the premier artists of each line.

If Ever They Happened Upon My Lair by R. A. Salvatore

* Ringo Heffenstone, dwarf

* Nordwinnil Fellhammer, dwarf

* Pergiss, dwarf

* Kazmil-urshula-kelloakizilian, black dragon, Urshula, beast of the bog

* Byphast the Frozen Death, elf, white dragon

* Zhengyi, Lich, witch-king of Vaasa

* Honoringhast, red dragon

* Lord of Damara,

* Bloodstone Lands

* Gareth Dragonsbane, Paladin

* Sir Donegan, senior knight of ht eorder

* Maryin Felspur, Knight of the Order

* Sir Bevell, Knight of the Order

* Master Fisticus, leader of trio of wizards

* Sir Gavaland, knight of the order

This story is set in the Forgotten Realms. As I am mostly unfamiliar with it, I am unsure if it has any special connection with other stories. It certainly reads as if it’s the ‘bad guys’ side of a greater story.  It’s centered around the Witch-King of Vaasa, Zhengyi, a lich. He is battling for control of the Bloodstone Lands and is using the dragons in the area, promising them unlife as dracoliches when they die, if they assist him. He has already enlisted the white dragon Byphast, the red dragon Honoringhast, and countless other wyrms, though they don’t always seem happy about working with the lich. A black dragon named Urchula attacked a nearby town to his lair and drew the attention of Zhengyi. He approached the dragon and offered it the opportunity to join him, but was rejected. Then the battle against Gareth Dragonsbane began to turn against him. He sent Byphast against them but she couldn’t defeat them, and he eventually lured them to Urshula’s lair, where they went in and attacked the black dragon. They were doing it great harm when Zhengyi intervened, destroying their wizards, but that did not deter the Knights of th eOrder, they fought on and though they were all but wiped out,

Homecoming by Lizz Weis

Darden, brotherErwyn, fatherCamron, Cam, Alban, townEmberlynn, Em, narrator

This is an interesting story about a family waiting for their son to return home after the War of the Lance. His name is Darden, and his sister Emberlynn has a secret pet she is keeping in the barn. Darden has PTSD from the war and his sister invites him to visit her pet. It turns out to be a black dragon wyrmling! Darden tries to kill it but it is saved by Emberlynn as she runs off into the wilderness. She encounters a giant cave spider’s lair which begins to stalk her. Darden chases after his sister, sure the wyrmling is going to kill her as he witnessed dragons decimate entire towns in the war. When he finally catches up to Emberlynn, she is wrapped up in the spider's web. He begins trying to rescue her, but the spider pins him down and the wyrmling begins to lurk from the distance. It attacks the spider, forcing it to retreat, and frees the two from the webs as Darden finishes the spider off with his sword. He convinces Emberlynn to leave the wyrmling here and they return home with the intention of visiting it. The black dragon wyrmling is intelligent and begins to feed on the humanoid victims of the cave spider. It plans on returning to town when it’s larger to enslave and feed on the silly humans there. This story is great as it presents the wyrmling as an innocent pet, but then showcases its evil intentions that are hidden from its caretaker while it is small and vulnerable. I really like the direction this took, but I wish they would have taken more time to explore the PTSD of Darden, like him freezing in the battle or going crazy momentarily with the Cave Spider.

What if the Kingpriest of Istar had never fallen? What if the gods had never turned away from Krynn? And what if the fiery mountain never came—and the Empire of Istar stood unbroken?

Discussion

In this alternate timeline… the Kingpriest succeeded. He conquered not only the world… but the gods themselves.

This timeline begins when the Graygem of Gargath fell into the Kingpriest’s hands, everything changed. He no longer sought to cleanse evil—he sought to own the light. The gem, having trapped Chaos itself, gave him the power to command divinity. He bound the True Gods in mortal form, stripped them of their thrones, and declared himself the Godking of Krynn.

Under his  rule, Istar became the center of all creation… and all who lived upon Krynn bowed to him. The world that followed was not destroyed by fire—it was consumed by order. From the shores of Ergoth to the deserts of Khur, every kingdom became a Dominion of Istar. The banners of the blue eye and golden sun fluttered above every city. Laws of purity replaced laws of freedom.

The Knights of Solamnia rebelled, but were driven down and broken by the magic of the Godking’s priests. They served as paladins of the Godking’s peace—hunting wizards, heretics, and any who defied Istar’s perfection. Everywhere, the Eye gazed down—the symbol of the Godking’s sight and judgment. It was stamped into coins, carved above doorways, branded into slaves. Even the heavens bore his mark.

Where once three moons governed the flow of magic, now there was only one: a massive, blue-tinted orb that filled the night sky. At its center glowed a dark pupil—the living eye of the Godking himself. To the faithful, this world seemed pure and bright. But beneath its light, there was no compassion—only fear.

The Years of Hunting began with the proclamation that the impure must be erased. Kender were the first to fall—called “the children of chaos.” Goblins, ogres, minotaurs, and gnomes followed. Each race was hunted to extinction in the name of divine order. The elves fared only slightly better. Deemed “close to perfection,” they were allowed to live—but only as favored servants of Istar’s priests, their ancient pride chained to the service of tyranny.

Magic itself was broken. When the moons merged, the Orders of High Sorcery lost their gods and their power. The towers were seized, their knowledge burned. The Tower of High Sorcery in Palanthas was reclaimed—its blackened stones restored to white marble, its Shoikan Grove made a garden of light.

Game Setup

Last time on Tyranny of Dragons: The heroes reconvened at the Last Inn on the Left and after Elowyn was verbally abused by the barkeep, the heroes were asked to leave when Gunnar threatened him. They slept outside for the night to avoid the constable and when the caravan arrived the following morning, they all reentered Deepdel to join the caravan. They assisted Ackyn Selebon supply customers and met Garrick Bloodmoor, another Legionnaire who joined their party. They could not locate Henry, but took his disappearance as on-brand. They each signed up with merchants on the caravan and left Deepdel for good. On the road they experienced terrible weather. They were beset upon by two Dopplegangers in the form of busty women who ultimately killed Achreny Ulyeltin, a human merchant, and they were all fingered for the murder. K’thriss convinced the caravan that they were not guilty and they all gave up the search for the night due to inclement weather. The next morning the caravan was surrounded by fungus from an immense mycelium. They moaned in pain and emitted a puff of black spores when stepped on, affecting the psychology of those hearing it and in range to inhale the spores. The effect faded but the emotional scars remain. On the fifth day of the journey, they saw a noble abusing his horse and intervened inadvertently killing the man. Will the heroes get away with this murder, or correct the error?

Review

1. Eyes of Chaos by Sue Weinlein Cook

This story was about a blue dragon named Clamor who suffered from PTSD after fighting with her late rider Sir Jerne Stormcrown in the Abyss during the Chaos War. Jerne leaped off her back to attack a Daemon Warrior atop his Fire Dragon and they both plummeted to their doom. Clamor fought the Fire Dragon, after it clawed her leg, letting chaos seep into her and corrupt her. She witnessed the end of the Chaos War and flew back to the Kharolis mountains, tormenting the elves and ogres around there. Going village to village taking souls to placate the chaos that was poisoning her. She felt tremendous guilt about her rider's death and wanted to bring honor to his name in his absence, but inside she knew it was not honorable. In the end she let death come to her as elves and ogres teamed up to kill her. She saw Jerne in a river calling to her, and she went to him in death. As I write this is incredibly more sad than reading the story was, and knowing about the War of Souls that wasn’t a thing when this was originally written, I know her soul will not find Jerne in death, and that is even sadder. But I enjoyed the short story none-the-less.

2. The Noble Folly by Mark Anthony

This was another sad tale. A Knight of Takhisis named Kal was headed up to meet the dragon of redstone to regain his glory after the vision left him with the gods at the end of the Chaos War. he came upon a Knight of the Rose named Brinon who was blinded and was also headed up to the dragon of redstone to slay it, proving his honor and that would bring Paladine back. The knights share a repast and Kal left to find the dragon. On his way up the mountain he loosed a boulder which crushed his leg and started an avalanche. Brinon found him and helped him. They decided to go up the mountain together. Kal would try to join with the Dragon and if he refused Brinon would slay it. It seemed the blind and crippled needed each other. One the way up the mountain we learned about their backstories. Kal was a beggar before Ariakan and he is afraid that he never had honor, just the vision, and without that, only the memories of those he killed. Brinon ran from battle and only saw the dead and horrors of war in his eyes so he blinded himself. They finally reached the summit and began attacking what they believed was the dragon only to have it revealed as a stone formation that looked like a dragon from a distance. Then Brinon believed he needed to fight Kal for his honor and Kal wanted none of it. Brinon eventually killed himself by using Kal inadvertently and thanked him. Kal walked away with the thought that without the gods, we were left to our own devices, to suffer or find meaning as we will. Its a devastating idea, yet the reality I believe we all share in real life. We are what we choose to be as The Iron Giant film tells us. And I personally love the notion.
