#17 Death Cab and Taxes

Listeners, we are back! And we are breaking down our W2s, our 1099s, and the best way to not pay your taxes.

Did you know your taxes are loans to the US government to fund genocide around the world? Despite the history of "no taxation without representation", most American's agree that their taxes are clearly not funding what they need (healthcare, infrastructure, food security, housing, roads) with little representative recourse available in politics. We talk the options of to file or not file, how and what to claim to not pay the government, and what possible consequences exist for tax fraud and evasion.

Free Palestine!

P.S. you may have noticed our general media silence; we hate instagram/social media, and work very hard to survive and pay our rent, and simply make 0 dollars on this pod. so we need you, dear precious listener, to spread our podcast to all your pals, family, and potential lovers. Thanks for listening <3

#16 Hotties Have Spiritual Trauma

Hey yall, we're back! This episode, we're exploring the intersection of the experience God and the nervous system. Many of us have some kind of religious or spiritual trauma, but what does that mean for our intuition? How do we continue to stay connected to our magical and divine spirit? We answer this question, and also make a few jokes a long the way.

Thanks as always for listening, and for your support as we continue to find the time and energy to organize, record, and edit the pod. Stay tuned for our next two episodes (already recorded!) coming next month <3

#15 A/S/L?

This week, emotional labor exposes our algorithm and gets chronically online. From influencers on instagram to your myspace top 8, the internet has always provided a place and platform for people to expose their very private information for data mining. Tune in to hear us reminisce on our earliest online memories and ask the hard questions likelike is tiktok bad, actually? and how does the internet change our perspective of time and connection? Plus, listen for a very fun and cool voicemail from haylin's adolescent internet archive.

RIP Ted Kaczynski, you would have loved this episode but you'd probably never listen to a podcast

#14: Waging Hard or Hardly Waging?

What's up with wages? Seriously, what's up with wages? Like, have you ever noticed how the jobs that pay the least per hour also tend to be the most taxing and degrading kinds of labor? Or how charging more money/having higher wages makes people like and respect you more as a human being? Or how you can do the exact same labor and make 10x more doing it if you're working specifically and directly for rich people? One time I met a guy who got paid 70k to follow the CEO around and tell him his ideas were good. What the fuck is up with that?

#12: Your Friends Will Literally K*ll You

Brutus and Caesar, Judas and Jesus, Serena and Blair, Tony Soprano and Christopher Moltisanti, Eve and Villanelle. We know the story; best friends to enemies. But how come this destructive relationship pattern is so pervasive? And how do you even know who your “real” friends are? This week, emotional labor unpacks friendship, vulnerability, power structures of intimacy, and the phenomena of hurting the ones we love.

#9: Happy birthday, quarantine (Re-Upload)

(Originally uploaded 03/17/2021.)

One year since March Madness was cancelled, since the infamous "Imagine" cover, since experiences of people, places, and things. Yes, it has been one year since America went into lockdown, and we have been in some version of quarantine since then. Literally as we write this, Italy has recently entered a second Lockdown due to COVID-19 variants. We talk about where we were on Friday the 13th of March 2020, and all the pleasurable things about life we are missing and dreaming about.  It's agony, it's ecstasy, it's emotional labor.

SO grab yourself a treat, wear you cutest comfy fit, and settle in for a loving quarantine vday with Emotional Labor :)

#5: Cults (Re-upload)

What do NXVIM, Scientology, Woody Allen, Michael Haneke's 'Funny Games', Onision (aka the "I'm a banana" guy), white fragility, our ex-boyfriends, flat earthers,  and capitalism have in common? They're all reference points for today's conversation about cults! Our audio dude said this episode "definitely felt more structured" than our first four - we have no idea what he's talking about, but hey, apparently we managed to pull together a cohesive thesis! Sick!

#4: Sorry, the world isn't ending (yet) (Re-Upload)

(Originally uploaded 11/19/2020.)

This little time capsule was recorded the day after the election, so strap in for a #tbt adventure in absurdism! We talk about the end of the world (and how it's - unfortunately - not happening) and the fundamental shift of power that is currently playing out through the theater of politics. Y'know, super light stuff like that.

TYSM to Caleb Smith, audio dude extraordinaire! Come follow us on Instagram (@e.mo.tion.al.la.bor) or shoot us an email (heyyy@emotionallabor.co) to say hey!

#3: Sometimes, cancel culture is okay! (Re-Upload)

(Originally uploaded 11/21/2020.)

Did you know that cancel culture is okay, and also is not real? This week, we're cancelling JD Vance, Lana del Rey, Sean Penn, and your host, Al! (But not Haylin. She's cool.) The good news is, you don't have to unsubscribe, because again, cancel culture is not real. If you're confused, tune in to hear Al (RIP) and Haylin talk about boundaries, doxxing, and the infinite wisdom of Zoomers.

Thank you as always to our audio dude, Caleb, for making us sound great! He also told us that this episode was exceptionally funny, which was very cool of him. #2: General Strike! (Re-Upload)

(Originally uploaded 10/7/2020.)

A “general strike” usually means a strike across industries. But what if we all just strike, like, in general? This episode, we’re talking about divesting from society, the cult of capitalism, the absurdity of “vote or die,” and regaling y’all with tales of all the jobs we’ve quit before. Also, goblin sharks.

Content warning: Brief and non-graphic mentions of s**cide.

Shout out to Caleb Smith, our amazing audio engineer, for making this episode sound very nice (and making us sound very smart). We’d love to hear what you think about the show, so be sure to check out our Instagram at @e.mo.tion.al.la.bor and send us your best job-quitting story to heyyy@emotionallabor.co. Ok, bye!
