Story Transcript:

En: It was a cold November afternoon in Vondelpark.

En: The air was crisp, and the colors of the autumn leaves shone gold and red under the pale sun.

En: Children were cheerful, their voices mingling with the soft rustling of leaves and the light from their Sint-Maarten lanterns dancing along the paths.

En: In the middle of this lively scene stood Lars, wrapped in his thick wool scarf.

En: He looked at the small circle gathered around him: his wife Eva and their children, Bram and his younger sister.

En: They were here to remember Max, their beloved dog who had passed away a year ago.

En: This moment needed to be perfect, a balance between sadness and joy.

Nl: Naast hem stond Bram, zijn handen diep in zijn zakken gestoken.
En: Next to him stood Bram, his hands deeply shoved into his pockets.

Nl: Bram was anders sinds Max was gegaan.
En: Bram was different since Max was gone.

En: Withdrawn, he rarely spoke more than necessary to his father.

Nl: Lars voelde het schuldgevoel knagen.
En: Lars felt the gnawing guilt.

En: His decision to take Max to the vet earlier had not allowed for more time, but for more grief.

Nl: "Zullen we beginnen?"
En: "Shall we begin?"

Nl: vroeg Eva zachtjes, haar hand op Lars’ arm.
En: Eva asked softly, her hand on Lars’ arm.

En: He nodded and caught his breath to find the right words.

En: "We are here today to remember Max," began Lars as he lit the lanterns, a gesture he hoped would build a bridge between the seasons of grief and the joy of St. Maarten.

Nl: "Hij bracht ons zoveel geluk."
En: "He brought us so much happiness."

Nl: Het ritueel begon en kleine lampjes weerspiegelden in elk paar ogen.
En: The ritual began, and small lights were reflected in every pair of eyes.

Nl: De lampjes flakkerden in de avondbries.
En: The lights flickered in the evening breeze.

En: Silence descended over the group, broken by the sharp sound of a breaking twig.

Nl: Het was Bram.
En: It was Bram.

Nl: Zijn gezicht was...
