Af: Die son skyn helder oor Kirstenbosch se pragtige tuin, waar blomme hul koppe trots oplig na die lig van die nuwe lente.
En: The sun shines brightly over Kirstenbosch's beautiful garden, where flowers lift their heads proudly to the light of the new spring.

Af: Charl kyk om hom en asem die vars geur van die veld in.
En: Charl looks around him and breathes in the fresh scent of the field.

Af: Sy skoolklas is op 'n uitstappie hier, 'n kans om meer te leer oor Suid-Afrika se unieke plante.
En: His school class is on an outing here, a chance to learn more about South Africa's unique plants.

Af: "Kom, hou bymekaar," roep hul onderwyser, Mevrou Smit.
En: "Come, stay together," calls their teacher, Mrs. Smit.

Af: "Ons wil nie hê iemand moet verdwaal nie."
En: "We don't want anyone to get lost."

Af: Maar Charl het 'n ander plan in gedagte.
En: But Charl has a different plan in mind.

Af: Vandat hy gehoor het van die seldsame plant wat hier groei, is hy vasbeslote om dit self te sien.
En: Ever since he heard about the rare plant that grows here, he has been determined to see it for himself.

Af: Sy oë flits na Annelie, wat net voor Pieter stap.
En: His eyes flick toward Annelie, who is walking just ahead of Pieter.

Af: Sy glimlag, en Charl voel sy maag draai van spanning en hoop.
En: She smiles, and Charl feels his stomach twist with tension and hope.

En: He calculates in his head how long it will take him to get there and back without anyone noticing.

Af: Met 'n vinnige blik oor sy skouer, stap Charl stilweg weg.
En: With a quick glance over his shoulder, Charl quietly steps away.

Af: Hy skiet tussen die hoë bome deur en volg 'n paadjie wat hy gehoor het die dagstapper se gids noem.
En: He darts through the tall trees and follows a path he heard the day hiker's guide mention.

Af: Hy het nie veel tyd nie.
En: He doesn't have much time.
