Story Transcript:

En: The sharp spring sun shone over the South African countryside, where a large white farmhouse stood among green field flowers.

En: A good day for a family barbecue, Pieter thought.

En: He was determined to prove his capability.

En: His family had gathered for a traditional barbecue, and he wanted to be the one to make sure everything fell into place.

Af: Pieter het vanoggend vroeg wakker geword.
En: Pieter awoke early this morning.

Af: Hy kon hoor hoe die voëls buite in die bome kwetter terwyl die vroeë dou oor die gras lê.
En: He could hear the birds chirping in the trees outside as the early dew lay on the grass.

En: He took a deep breath, smelling the sweet scent of the field flowers and the juicy boerewors he would later grill.

Af: Sy suster, Annelie, was soos altyd georganiseerd.
En: His sister, Annelie, was organized as always.

En: She had already made a list of what still needed to be done.

En: "Peter, can you please set the tables and make sure there is enough wood for the fire?"

Af: " het sy gevra.
En: she asked.

En: Pieter nodded and jogged to the backyard.

En: Meanwhile, Johan, with his free spirit and easy laugh, had all the children gathered around him for a game of soccer on the field.

En: Pieter paused for a moment, watching with frustration.

En: Johan always attracted attention, often without lifting a finger.

En: However, Pieter wanted to be the one to impress his family this time.

En: He neatly stacked the wood next to the barbecue area and began to light the fire.

Af: Die vlamme het vinnig hoog geklim.
En: The flames quickly rose high.

En: Everything was going perfectly until a dark cloud began to gather in the distance.

Af: Die eerste druppels reën het onverwags begin val.
En: The first raindrops began to fall unexpectedly.

Af: "Haastig!
En: "Hurry!

Af: Die reën kom!
En: The rain is coming!"

En: For a moment, panic washed over the family's faces.
