Story Transcript:

En: Christmas was coming, and Aino and Mikael had just arrived at their cabin in Northern Lapland.

Fi: Ulkona oli pureva talvi.
En: Outside, there was a biting winter.

En: The cabin was situated among snowy pines, and from its window, you could see a frozen lake.

Fi: Mökki oli sisältä lämmin ja kodikas.
En: The cabin was warm and cozy inside.

Fi: Suuri kivinen takka tuoti lämpöä ja valoisa puinen sisustus heijasti perinteistä suomalaista tyyliä.
En: A large stone fireplace provided warmth, and the bright wooden interior reflected traditional Finnish style.

Fi: Aino halusi tehdä joulusta erityisen.
En: Aino wanted to make this Christmas special.

En: She had planned everything in advance: hot glögi (mulled wine), gingerbread dough, and decorating the Christmas tree.

Fi: Kuitenkin, kun he heräsivät aattoaamuna, sää oli muuttunut.
En: However, when they woke up on Christmas Eve morning, the weather had changed.

Fi: Lumimyrsky ulvoin ulkona, puut notkuivat lumen painosta ja pihan polut olivat kadonneet lumen alle.
En: A snowstorm howled outside, the trees bent under the weight of the snow, and the paths in the yard were buried under the snow.

Fi: Mikael alkoi valittaa päänsärkyä heti aamusta.
En: Mikael began to complain of a headache right in the morning.

Fi: "Migreeni," hän mutisi tuskallisesti, kädet päässään.
En: "Migraine," he mumbled painfully, hands on his head.

Fi: Aino katsoi häntä huolestuneena.
En: Aino looked at him worriedly.

En: She knew Mikael didn't like being ill, but now he had to rest.

Fi: Aino mietti, mitä tehdä.
En: Aino pondered what to do.

Fi: He eivät voineet toteuttaa suunnitelmiaan myrskyn takia.
En: They couldn't carry out their plans because of the storm.

Fi: Lisäksi Mikaelin tilanne paheni pian.
En: Additionally, Mikael's condition soon worsened.

Fi: Hän tunsi vastuun rauhoittaa Mikaelin oloa ja toisaalta pitää tunnelman kevyenä.
En: She felt responsible for calming Mikael's discomfort and, on the other hand, maintaining a lighthearted atmosphere.

Fi: Aino päätti löytää uusia tapoja viettää joulua sisällä.
En: Aino decided to find new ways to spend Christmas indoors.

Fi: Kun ilta saapui, tilanne paheni.
En: When evening arrived, the situation worsened.

Fi: Mökin sähköt katkesivat.
En: The cabin's electricity went out.

En: It was really dark now, and the raging snowstorm outside added to the unease.

Fi: Aino mietti hetken, mutta sitten hänen silmänsä osuivat kynttilään pöydällä.
En: Aino thought for a moment, but then her eyes caught sight of a candle on the table.

Fi: Hän sytytti kaikki mökissä olevat kynttilät, ja pehmeä, lämmin hehku täytti huoneen.
En: She lit all the candles in the cabin, and a soft, warm glow filled the room.

Fi: Aino valmisteli Mikaelille yrttiteetä ja peitteli hänet hyvin viltillä sohvalle.
En: Aino...
