The Sámi are the only indigenous peoples in Europe. Their territory extends across a total of four different countries in the far north of the European continent. The struggle for their rights requires political efforts at the national level in Sweden, Norway, Russia and Finland, as well as at the transnational level, for example in the Arctic Council.
In this episode, we talk to the experienced international legal practitioner and professor of international law, Prof. René Urueña, about what these disputes look like and how the political situation in northern Fennoscandia can be compared with the political struggles of indigenous peoples in Latin America. René Urueña’s work focuses on the ways in which complex social challenges can be understood, and tackled, as distinctively legal problem. After years of working with indigenous groups in Colombia and Venezuela, in recent years, he has focused intensively on the political and legal struggles of the Sámi, particularly in Finland. He will give us an insight into his research on the political and legal challenges in their quest for recognition and self-determination. We will also talk about the challenges posed by the Russian war against Ukraine.
