[REVIEW] HelloTalk or Why it takes FOREVER to find a language partner

How long does it take to find a language partner on HelloTalk? This time it took me 24 minutes, but I only had an exchange for 12 minutes. So my partner practiced English for 6 minutes, and I practiced speaking Spanish for 6 minutes! I'm a busy person and I don't have this kind of spare time to waste every day just to find a language partner.

You have to post publicly or message a bunch of people. Not everybody you message or who shows interest in speaking actually wants to speak! Whether at that time that you're ready, or at all! There is a lot of inefficiency with HelloTalk for this reason.

This is why we built Fluentel. https://fluen.tel

Foreigner and Friends™
[INTERVIEW] Paisley from Learn German through Music

In this episode we interviewed Paisley from the Learn German through Music podcast. Here's a few highlights of what we discussed:

  • As an infant, some of her first words were German, but it was music like Einstürzende Neubauten later in life that got her interested in the German language
  • In university, Paisley majored in German, studied abroad in Tübingen and Munich, and completed her capstone project on Caspar David Friedrich
  • She had a gap of over 10 years where her language level dropped to a B1, but the parts of the language stuck with her the most were from her experience with German music
  • If she could learn a new language with extra time, it would be Afrikaans!

Check out the Learn German Through Music podcast on Spotify. Also, visit her podcast page on Anchor where you can listen to each episode, send Paisley a voice message, and access the other social media accounts. Follow the podcast on Twitter @GermanthruMusic

[QUICK] La lana - Wool in Italian and Spanish

Wool is the same word in Italian and Spanish: la lana.

You can add meaning to this word by associating it with Adam Lallana, the footballer. His paternal abuelo is actually from Madrid, Spain. Fun fact: the Catalan word for wool is llana with two L's.

Lana - wool

Sciarpa di lana - wool scarf

Lana d'acciaio - steel wool

Lana caprina - piddling; a moot point

Sul filo di lana - down to the wire

Thanks to Forvo for the pronunciation submissions.

Foreigner and Friends™
👋 Welcome to Foreigner and Friends™

Seriously, another language learning podcast? Hear me out.

I know you can listen to studio-quality stories from Duolingo, get classroom-level instruction from Language Transfer, and listen to fully-immersive conversations from podcasts like Easy Spanish.

However, on this podcast, Foreigner and Friends, we'll have 3 types of episodes that you can't really get anywhere else:

The first will be interviews with all sorts of people in the language-learning space. From newbies who have no idea what they're getting themselves into, to polyglots who can count their languages spoken on both hands. We'll also be speaking with teachers, entrepreneurs, app developers, and other podcast hosts... just to name a few.

The second type of episode will be short little nuggets of language-learning wisdom. Something you can listen to in less than 5 minutes to help you reason about the constructs and make it sticky.

Finally, I'll be sharing my personal journey with you as I continue to improve and expand the language partner phone service I invented called Fluentel. It's not an app; it's just a phone number you call and we connect you with a native speaker of your target language so you can practice speaking. So that brings you to me, your host, Aaron Kelton. I'm a software developer and entrepreneur, I'm learning Spanish and Italian, and I like to create stuff to help people.

Oh, the name, Foreigner and Friends. What's that all about? Think about it this way: Every single one of us is a Foreigner somewhere. And if we were dropped in a *foreign* country where we had to learn a *foreign* language, we would want the local people to befriend us; not treat us with suspicion, or worse. The hope of this show is to enhance foreign language fluency so that we can better understand each other and treat each other with more kindness.

If you end up listening to and liking this show, be a Friend and leave us a review. It will help other people discover the show so they too can benefit from it. Thank you, and enjoy the show.

[INTERVIEW] Joshua Rague, a Toastmaster and Network Consultant for Cisco Systems from Mexico City

Today's episode is an interview with Joshue Rague. Here's a few highlight of what we discussed:

  • When learning English, forget your native language grammar and embrace English with an open mind
  • Joshua would watch English-language news programs and try to imitate them to sound more natural
  • If he could learn any language next, he said he would learn Swedish! 🇸🇪
