On this edition of Free City Radio we hear from photographer Mahmoud Khattab, who reflects on Egypt today. Mahmoud has recently published a beautiful photo book, that also includes some writing, which is drawn from Mahmoud's experiences as a conscript in the Egyptian army. Mahmoud subtly documented his experiences in Egypt, facing conscription time, through a set of intimate and beautiful photographs. The book is described this way: "The Dog Sat Where We Parted is a photography book: a visual narrative of my time in conscription as I venture into the desert as a soldier with a dog, a head shaved and a camouflage that appealed to sand. Questioning times of following orders and sharing a plate and a story with strangers who dressed and shaved their heads just like me. Through photographs discretely taken together with journal writings, I echoed my solitude as I pay my debt to a country with servitude of my body and time." Also Pramesh identifies key points of context that can allow us to better understand the recent waves of protests in Nepal and how that relates to rural to urban displacement realities that many communities are facing.
