Double-O-Problem

Geekville goes British to talk all things Amazon and James Bond! Today, we dive into some news about the future of our favorite British spy.

1:00 – Amazon Now Controls The James Bond Franchise

In a deal worth reportedly over a billion dollars, Amazon has bought the creative rights to the James Bond franchise. They bought MGM a few years back so they already had distribution rights

1:45 – Bond History

Ian Fleming wrote the first Bond novel, Casino Royale, in 1953. Eon Productions, originally headed by the legendary Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, produced 25 Bond films, dating all the way back to the release of Dr. No in 1962. After Albert died in 1996, his daughter Barbara Broccoli and fellow producer Michael G. Wilson took ownership of the rights.

4:00 – Enter Amazon

MGM has distributed Bond films since 1981’s For Your Eyes Only. Amazon bought MGM in 2021, thus acquiring the distribution rights to Bond and other MGM franchises like Stargate. Several clashes reportedly took place between Amazon and Broccoli. One rumored reason is that Broccoli resented Amazon referring to future Bond movies as “content”.

7:15 – Conclusion

As of now, there’s no official word on who will portray the next James Bond. However, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos recently interacted with fans in an X post. Henry Cavill has emerged as the fan favorite to take on the iconic role.

So, what do you think about Amazon’s takeover and their future plans for James Bond? Will it be the shake-up the franchise needs or a misstep for our beloved 007? Stay tuned as this story continues to unfold, and join the conversation about the future of James Bond.
