Jim Crockett Promotions - NaPodPoMo 2025 Day 5

We step into the world of pro wrestling for NaPodPoMo Day 5. This time, however, we are not stepping into the ring. We are stepping into the office to talk about the career of the late Jim Crockett Jr, arguably the second greatest pro wrestling promoter next to Vince McMahon.

Jim Crockett Promotions

To tell the story of Jim Crockett Jr. (or “Jimmy”) we first have to look at the family and the business at the time. Jim Crockett Sr. (aka “Big Jim”) was a promoter of many sports and entertainment genres, including pro wrestling. Vince McMahon talked about how much his dad respected Big Jim, and that he was a good promoter and a good man.

Big Jim ran Jim Crocket Promotions from 1935 until his sudden untimely death of a heart attack in 1973 at the age of 63. The company was originally meant to go to John Ringley. who was married to the oldest sibling, Frances Crockett. However, he got caught cheating on her and the reigns were handed over to Jim Jr.

It’s worth noting that even in the 1970s a woman owning and running a business was still uncommon. It’s also worth noting that Ann Gunkel also tried running a wrestling promotion after her husband Roy passed away and was not very successful.

Rise to Prominance

One of the changes Jimmy made after taking over the promotion was to bring in George Scott as head booker. He focused on singles feuds for shows in larger arenas. Jimmy is also credited with creating the NWA Mid-Atlantic US Title, which is still recognized by WWE to this day. He also helped forge what would become a vital part of wrestling, the major show PPV like Starrcade.

When you look at it from a per capita standpoint, Jimmy ran the #1 territory for a while. He famously bought the 6:05 PM on TBS to replace a WWF show on Saturday Nights. The first two or three years after that were some of the best years of any wrestling promotion ever. While JCP was still running in the southeastern part of the US (Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia, and Florida), it still managed to sell more tickets to wrestling events than Vince McMahon’s World Wrestling Federation, which had expanded nationally.

Unfortunately, despite outselling WWE in ticket sales in 1986, Jim Crockett Promotions wound up over one million dollars in debt in 1988. The family had no choice but to sell the company to Ted Turner’s media company.

We had a similar discussion on our horror-themed podcast Examining The Dead.

Each panelist offers examples of superheroes or other fictional characters for each alignment. The result is a smorgasbord of geek talk about who fits what alignment.

Daredevil: Born Again Eps 1-3

We’re talking about the first three episodes of the highly acclaimed MCU series Daredevil: Born Again.

1:40 – The Numbers

The early numbers are not good. Variety reports approximately 7.5 million watched over the first 9 days. For comparison, Agatha All Along got 9.3 million. Some say it’s great, while others are more skeptical. It’s been called the biggest debut of the year on Disney+, but anybody who looks at Disney+’s content knows they have very little original programming. Most of their viewership comes from older content like their movies or from shows that they just have the rights to, such as Bluey.

Feedback on the show itself has been mostly positive, so why are the numbers bad? I think it shows apathy to the franchise. I do think if this show stays good, there will be some people who will binge when the season is over.

4:15 – Overall Thoughts

If you liked the old show, you’ll probably like this one. The performances are solid, both the old and new actors. Returning are Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, and, of course, Jon Bernthal. New are Michael Gandolfini, Margarita Levieva, Zabryna Guevara, and Nikki M. James (not Mickie James).

8:20 – Spoiler Territory

MAJOR POINTS

* Bullseye killed Foggy Nelson

* His murder destroyed the relationship between Matt and Karen

* Kingpin was elected Mayor of New York

* White Tiger is in prison for accidentally killing an undercover cop

* The Fisks are now Heather’s clients

* Matt killed two corrupt cops

* Hector was acquitted of the murder charges, but he was outed as The White Tiger

* Fisk vows to take care of this vigilante

* White Tiger was shot to death, possibly by The Punisher

MAJOR QUESTIONS

* Why did Bullseye kill Foggy

* Could Bullseye be in cahoots with the Fisk family? Or one of their competitors?

* Is Foggy really dead? He did fake his death in the comics, so this could be an adaption of that. Both Foggy and Karen are returning in the second season

* Who are the corrupt cops working for?

* Why were they assaulting Torres?

* How long before Heather learns Matt is Daredevil?

* Was that really The Punisher who killed White Tiger? And if so is he doing it for Fisk?

* Why were the cops roughing up Torres in the first place?

* Are these cops with skull tattoos affiliated with Punisher?

14:15 – Predictions

* One of the last scenes of this season will be the return of Foggy

* Nicky Torres got roughed up because he saw the corruption

* Heather will learn Matt is Daredevil, possibly killed off next season

* The “Punisher Cops” are not in cahoots with Punisher. The Punisher would NEVER go along with that

* It was not The Punisher who killed White Tiger, it was an imposter

* The Punisher movie/Special Presentation will stem from this,

Double-O-Problem

Geekville goes British to talk all things Amazon and James Bond! Today, we dive into some news about the future of our favorite British spy.

1:00 – Amazon Now Controls The James Bond Franchise

In a deal worth reportedly over a billion dollars, Amazon has bought the creative rights to the James Bond franchise. They bought MGM a few years back so they already had distribution rights

1:45 – Bond History

Ian Fleming wrote the first Bond novel, Casino Royale, in 1953. Eon Productions, originally headed by the legendary Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, produced 25 Bond films, dating all the way back to the release of Dr. No in 1962. After Albert died in 1996, his daughter Barbara Broccoli and fellow producer Michael G. Wilson took ownership of the rights.

4:00 – Enter Amazon

MGM has distributed Bond films since 1981’s For Your Eyes Only. Amazon bought MGM in 2021, thus acquiring the distribution rights to Bond and other MGM franchises like Stargate. Several clashes reportedly took place between Amazon and Broccoli. One rumored reason is that Broccoli resented Amazon referring to future Bond movies as “content”.

7:15 – Conclusion

As of now, there’s no official word on who will portray the next James Bond. However, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos recently interacted with fans in an X post. Henry Cavill has emerged as the fan favorite to take on the iconic role.

So, what do you think about Amazon’s takeover and their future plans for James Bond? Will it be the shake-up the franchise needs or a misstep for our beloved 007? Stay tuned as this story continues to unfold, and join the conversation about the future of James Bond.

Daredevil Trailer, Skelton Crew Finale

We’re talking the Daredevil: Born Again trailer, and giving our obligatory review of the Skeleton Crew series finale!

1:30 – Daredevil: Born Again trailer

Daredevil takes down a thug in an alley

Matt and Kingpin meet at the familiar diner

A thug meets a gruesome end in front of a train

Does this thug know this is Daredevil?

Bullseye in prison, perhaps getting released?

Matt and Margarita Levieva’s character dance

An explosion in a New York bank

Matt’s collection of masks

The trailer shows that time has passed since Daredevil’s third season. Kingpin decided to run for Mayor after the events of Echo. Matt Murdock gave up being Daredevil and seems to be having a relatively normal life. It’s a safe bet that something will happen involving White Tiger, Heather Glenn, and/or Bullseye that will guide Matt to donning the suit once again. It’s also likely that Kingpin won’t be able to resist getting his hands on the criminal underworld again.

15:30 – Skeleton Crew Finale

The episode itself was very entertaining, but not so much as a finale as it left several unanswered questions. Presumably all the pirates will be arrested, but then what? These may well be questions for a second season but after The Acolyte debacle, I’m not so confident this show will be seen by enough people to warrant a second season.

What will happen to At Attin now that it’s part of the galaxy? Could it be incorporated back into The New Republic? Or could this be one of the motions put into play that ushers in the Sequel Trilogy? At Attin could be key to The Rise Of Skywalker.
