The end of the year is here for the Girlies, and we're cuddling up with something cozy to round out a stellar year of podcasting. This week, we're covering Paul's episode of Marple, based on Agatha Christie's novel Sleeping Murder, featuring the famous heroine Miss Marple.
We'll be back in January with new episodes — thanks so much for listening!

Sorry about this episode being late, y'all! The Girlies had some Life Stuff get in the way, but we hope that the content this time will more than make up for it, because we're covering all of Paul's horror (or horror adjacent) shorts!
This week, we're covering Rob Savage's Absence, A Little Place Off the Edgware Road, and the not-technicall-a-short pilot for Fables of Forgotten Things. Enjoy!

Spooky season is here once again! To celebrate this year, Maggie and Katie are covering Paul's 1990 turn in Paper Mask, playing a hospital orderly who poses as a doctor and finds himself caught between a rock and a hard place.

As we head into fall, we're cooling things down and returning back to our usual format to examine the 2000 unintentional miniseries Fish, starring Paul as an employment lawyer who's wife has left him with his eight-year-old son and a life he can't quite seem to control.

Howdy! After taking some much-needed time off while Maggie was visiting the UK, the Girlies are back with a slight change in format. This episode, we're covering four of Paul's many short films: The Dance of Shiva (1998), Perplexed Music (2017), Swallow Your Dreams (2021), and The Day of the Sun Dig (2023).
Listen on for talk about the advantages and pitfalls and short filmmaking, Paul's freedom as an actor in this unique medium, and exactly how Maggie's trip to the Edinburgh Fringe fits into the Girlies' game of Six Degrees of Paul McGann. (No, really!)

After several less than stellar titles, things are finally looking up for the Girlies! This week, we're covering the 1989 Wall Street rip-off Dealers, starring Paul and Rebecca de Mornay as competing coworkers at a financial office in London that's in hot water after losing $100 million.
Listen on for talk about yuppie culture, Paul's '80s trajectory as a Tom Cruise/Robert Downey Jr./'80s heartthrob of your choice replacement, and the film's surprising connection to David Bowie.

We're going to hell for this one — literally. This week, we're covering 1990's The Monk, an adaptation of the Gothic novel starring Paul in the title role. And while it continues our trend of Paul as religious figure, we...did not love this one.

After much clamoring and requesting of this title, the Girlies are finally tackling The Hanging Gale, the miniseries which not only features Paul, but also all three of his brothers! The four brothers star as a family of Irish farmers during the Great Famine, based on the McGanns' real family ancestry and developed by Stephen and Joe.
Listen on for an in-depth discussion of the real history behind the series, a firm judgement on the boys' Irish accents, and which McGann the girls ended up with a crush on at the end. (Hint: it's not Paul!)

After our wonderful surprise episode interviewing writer-director Michael Wright and star-producer Roger Barclay, the Girlies are back for a full-fledged episode discussing The Undertaker! (Sorry for those of y'all waiting on our Hanging Gale episode — this one's been in the works for quite some time!)
After waiting several years for it to get a US release, Maggie and Katie are very excited for you to hear their discussion on the film, which includes praising the film's production design, discussing its unexpectedly otherworldly undertones, and dissecting Paul's rare role in a proper tragedy.
The film is now available on digital in the US and the UK, and is available for pre-order on Blu-ray. We hope you enjoy, and get a chance to check out the film too!

Surprise! The Girlies embarked on yet another side quest, this time taking a deeper look at Paul's latest role, The Undertaker, with writer/director Michael Wright and actor/producer Roger Barclay to celebrate the film's release in the US. Recorded back in February while the Girlies were at Gallifrey One, this special interview (which will be followed shortly by a proper episode on the film) discusses how they managed to land Paul for the lead role of Arthur Morel, working with the late Murray Melvin, Wright's miniature work on the film, and much, much more.
The film is now available on digital in the US and the UK, and is available for pre-order on Blu-ray. We hope you enjoy, and get a chance to check out the film too!

[Susan Wokoma on Taskmaster voice] Episode 30, babyyyyyy! We're continuing out Pride Month coverage this week with one of the...let's say "less beloved" films in Paul's canon: the 2009 horror comedy Lesbian Vampire Killers. Clearly a rip-off of both Shaun of the Dead and An American Werewolf in London, the poorly-titled film stars Mathew Horne and James Corden as a couple of hapless lads tasked with taking down a vampire coven, with some help from Paul as the village vicar.
As it turns out, Maggie and Katie actually loved this one, so listen on for discussion of how the film utilizes popular vampire tropes, what we loved about it, and why Maggie's going to hell for saying Paul looks hot as a priest. (Plus, a return of the "we love Paul's vampire incisors" discussion from The Monocled Mutineer!)

Happy Pride Month 2025 y'all! To celebrate, the Girlies have chosen a couple of queer titles featuring Paul, and first up is B&B, the 2017 thriller co-starring Tom Bateman and Sean Teale about a couple of Londoners who end up trapped at a bed and breakfast with a homophobic owner and a rather unsavory fellow customer. Paul takes on a different kind of role in this film as the B&B's owner, Josh, a conservative Christian with his own unsavory ideas for the film's leading men.
Listen on for discussion of queer filmmaking, Paul doing his best to make the most out of a limited role, and the pitfalls of indie filmmaking. Plus, after much asking on y'all's part, the Girlies' thoughts on that controversial Season 15 finale of Doctor Who!

After covering Paul's big break on the silver screen last episode, we're scaling things back to the small screen as we cover the series that made him a name in the UK: The Monocled Mutineer, a fictionalized series about Army deserter Percy Toplis. Paul stars as the layabout face of a revolution in the series that's often considered his career-maker, alongside faces like Penelope Wilton and Jerome Flynn.
Listen on for discussion of what makes a good film/series about war, this particular one's pacing issues, and Maggie going on a mini-rant about Paul's...teeth, for some reason. (We don't know either, folks. Sorry.)

It's finally here. After a year of questions about when we're going to be covering it, Maggie and Katie are finally digging into Paul's feature film debut, the cult classic Withnail & I, co-starring Richard E. Grant. The Bruce Robinson-directed film is beloved by Paul fans, but it turns out we...didn't love it?
Listen on to hear us dig into why this title doesn't really hit for us, as well as the things we *did* love, and some potentially gauche comparisons of certain characters to '60s music icons.

As we head into summer, we're racing into our latest episode as we cover Paul's 2022 episode of McDonald & Dodds, a cozy procedural about two police officers investigating murders in scenic Bath. Paul plays ruthless Formula 1 coach Archie Addington, who falls under suspicion after one of his drivers dies in a mysterious accident.
Listen on to hear Maggie attempt to explain F1 to Katie, as well as a lengthy discussion on cozy TV, Paul as villain, and...sea lions?

And now, for something completely different: we're taking a swing away from the political this week to talk about Paul's 2013 episode of the series Ripper Street, which ran for five seasons on the BBC and starred Matthew MacFadyen (aka our Mr. Darcy), Jerome Flynn, and Adam Rothenberg. Paul stars as Stanley Bone, a real estate developer who may have ties to the murder of the week.
Listen on for discussion of mental health treatment and policing in the late 19th century, why we think MacFadyen is far more suited for traditional drama than shows like Succession, and Paul's Macklemore-esque coat game this episode. (Plus, a brief appearance from Maggie's dog!)

This week, we're discussing 1989's Streets of Yesterday, a film Paul shot in Israel and berlin in the late '80s about two men caught in the middle of the violence between Israel and Gaza. Listen on for discussion of how film has evolved in covering sensitive topics since the '80s, the importance of indie filmmakers and supporting them in any way we can, and, inexplicably, a bunch of Ashes to Ashes references. Because of course.

We're back with the second half of our three-hour (!!!) conversation with Paul McGann! If you're a film buff, you'll love this half, as we take a deep dive into his love for silent film and the people who made it, as well as his experience working with industry legends like Kenneth Branagh and Jack Cardiff. There's also more on his dedication to war history, and plenty more. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did <3

We cannot thank Paul enough for this opportunity. He's as much of a doll as you'd hope, and we had an amazing time chatting about everything from Ashes to Ashes to Nice Town to Downtime and beyond. We're forever indebted to him for being kind enough to appear on the show, and to Ken Deep of Long Island Who Con for helping make this happen. As we shake off the last of the winter blues, the Girlies have arrived with their first side quest for 2025: their trip to Gallifrey One! Maggie flew all the way out to Los Angeles, where she got to see Katie, as well as make plenty of new friends, and both of them went way overboard on all things Doctor Who, as is tradition. (And also catch COVID, which explains why this episode is slightly later than usual. Whoops.)
Listen on for a breakdown of the con and all the folks we met, as well as some off-the-wall stories (because there's always a few at cons like these) and what's next for everyone who loves Gally.
