Originally from New Hampshire, she felt called to share the Christian faith in a region where Protestant work was rare and often dangerous. In the mid-1800s, Rankin founded schools, distributed Bibles, and quietly advanced her mission despite opposition and political unrest. James Calvert (1813–1892) was a British Methodist missionary best known for his work in Fiji. He arrived in the islands in 1838 and spent nearly two decades ministering there. At the time, Fiji was known for tribal warfare and cannibalism, but Calvert dedicated his life to spreading Christianity, promoting peace, and encouraging social change.
