Haunted UK Fiction
S01 - Episode 14 - The Retribution of Parson Beelzebub Brown by Jed Vesper
A bead of sweat careered down the dome of his forehead like a wet cockroach.  Slapping his head and rubbing frenziedly, he squeezed his eyes tight shut and groaned quietly.  What to do? What to do?  When he re-opened his bleary eyes, his heart lurched.  In wiping the sweat from his brow, he must have caught the curtains, and they had parted more widely.  A good six or seven inches.  Blinking his vision back into focus, he saw the dark invaders stop dead where they were; a tableau from some obscene pantomime.

Haunted UK Fiction
S01 - Episode 13 - The Lady of the Stairs by LJ Aldon
“The famous one is the Lady of the Stairs. Around the late 1400s, there was a woman who was a mistress of one of my ancestor’s lairds. His vengeful wife locked her up in one of the castle turrets, where she perished from not eating. Some psychics have seen her. She walks the stairways at night.”  “That’s a lie,” a voice hissed in Pucci’s ear—warm breath prickled her cheek...

Haunted UK Fiction
S01 - Episode 11 - The Hollow Rooms Part 1 by Ian Harris
The Hollow Rooms stood on the crest of the mountain like a black crown…. A long drive curved up through wrought iron gates, their bars twisted into the shapes of roses and thorns. The two figures who had been waiting were staff members—a man in a black suit with a gold watch chain, and a woman in a gray dress buttoned high to her neck. Both were pale in a way that spoke of years indoors, but there was something else, too: a stillness in their faces, as though their smiles had been painted on and dried there. “Welcome to the Hollow Rooms,” the man said, bowing slightly. His voice was low and smooth, like polished wood. “You must be the Morgan family. We’ve been expecting you…”

Flash Fiction Friday - Arena of Shadows by Jed Vesper
It is the not knowing that twists the guts of the helpless figure, almost as much as the awesome fear inspired by its breath-rasping gaoler.  This butcher now reaches deep into a pocket and its hand emerges with a fistful of brightly-coloured, self-adhesive bows – some green, some red, some silver, some gold…

Haunted UK Fiction
S01 - Episode 10 - Driftstone Marsh by Jason Wells
Heart pounding, he exhaled a shaky breath and forced himself to look left, then right. Nothing. No headlights, no shapes, nothing at all. Who else would be out here on a night like this? He was about to move off when something caught his eye—a flicker of movement in the field opposite.

A dark shape, large, powerful, tearing across the snow. He couldn’t tell what it was, only that it moved fast, until it vanished into the swirling snow and the ink-black night beyond.

‘What the hell…?’ Riley muttered. He rubbed condensation from the windscreen, but it made no difference. Muttering a curse, he shoved the door open and stood half in, half out, peering across the hedgerow. The night pressed close, thick with falling snow.

Then it came.

Haunted UK Fiction
Haunted UK Fiction - In Conversation with Theresa Cheung + Nightborn Preview
"Alice saw the wave. It was a beast. It rose slowly at first, the way a predator prepares to strike – silent, inevitable. It quickly gained speed, swelling into a towering monster, a force of nature, as if the ocean itself had decided to swallow her whole. The wave surged, easily 30 feet high, dark and roaring with a ferocity she could feel in her bones. It moved toward her with the relentlessness of fate…"

Welcome, dear listeners, to a special episode of Haunted UK Fiction where we will read an excerpt from a brand-new novel, and have a chat with its author, the wonderful Theresa Cheung.

Theresa, a prolific author who is widely recognized for her expertise in all things relating to dreams, was featured on the Haunted UK podcast last year. Theresa’s in-depth knowledge and research in the field of dreams and the paranormal has led to her authoring several international best-selling books, all of which were non-fiction… until now.

Theresa has approached us with her debut fictional novel, Nightborn, which ties into to her decades-long study of dreams, nightmares, sleep paralysis, incubus and succubus encounters, liminal dream states where ghostly figures appear, and even dream hacking. What if the line between your waking life and your darkest dreams disappeared forever?

Nightborn centers on a character by the name of Alice Sinclair, a driven psychology professor, is about to find out. When thousands of people begin experiencing terrifying, vivid nightmares ... all centered around her, Alice’s quiet academic life is shattered.

Haunted by the question of why she’s become the subject of these shared dreams, Alice embarks on a desperate search for answers, uncovering a chilling secret: someone - or something - hungry for global power has discovered a way to manipulate consciousness itself. The world is fast becoming a playground for those in control of the dreaming mind.

In a heart-stopping race against time, Alice must navigate a treacherous web of deception, where nothing - and no one - can be trusted, not even herself.

Settle as we read the suspenseful prologue and first chapter of Nightborn, then stay tuned afterwards for our chat with the brilliant and fascinating Theresa Cheung.

If you would like to learn more about Theresa or get in touch, you can find all up to date information on her website: https://www.theresacheung.com

Haunted UK Fiction
S01 - Episode 09 - The Overcoat by LD Brown
My father was in a strange mood that day. He welcomed me with genuine warmth and appeared, to me at least, quite comfortable and content in his soft armchair and his cup perched delicately on the left knee. His words, however, were of the most serious sort; he betrayed no emotion by stating the facts clearly and with a certain stiff formality. I was informed that he had something very important to tell…

Hello and welcome, dear listeners, to Haunted UK Fiction – a sister podcast to The Haunted UK which features original flash fiction, short stories, and novellas with paranormal themes. All stories you will hear were written by a collection of talented writers, authors, and storytellers, both independent and professional.

In today’s episode we’ll be reading The Overcoat, an eerie, spine-tingling tale which was sent in to us by LD Brown. LD Brown lives in the village of Hawkshead, Cumbria with his wife and too many cats. They own a beer shop together. For the past seven years, he has been running Ghost Walks in the village under the name: Tallow Tales; The Hawkshead Ghost Walk. Twice weekly he takes visitors around the village, regaling them with stories of local folklore. This also gives him the opportunity to wear a top hat. In his free time, LD writes horror stories and has been fortunate enough to get a few published here and there. His fiction is influenced by the bleaker side of the Lake District landscape; rainy, dripping woodlands, mosses, tarns, wetlands and their sinister ilk. His literary influences include Arthur Machen, MR James, EF Benson, JH Riddel and Algernon Blackwood. He also enjoys Folk Horror films and Peter Cushing.

We truly hope you enjoy this unsettling, atmospheric tale that is reminiscent of times gone by. If you would like to hear more from LD Brown, you can find his contact information, current and upcoming work, both as an author and as a ghostly tour guide, and follow him on social media with the links below:

Upcoming Works: LD Brown is hoping to get a collection of his short fiction published in the near future. He has also written a short horror novella which he has been sending to publishers.

Pierce saw a large group of men appear from a bellowing wall of white. Like ghostly figures emerging from beyond the supernatural veil. They were carrying a man on a makeshift stretcher. Pierce’s eyes still were not great, and he thought someone had covered the man in a velvet blanket for warmth, but as the struggling group got closer, he could see that it was no blanket. Blood covered the man from head to toe...

Haunted UK Fiction
S01 - Episode 07 - Roadsong by Glenn Quigley
A jukebox blasted out some Chuck Berry. He knew the tune but not the words. His mother liked Chuck, she had played his music all the time when he was growing up. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d heard it. Or any music, come to think of it. Had they been listening to the radio in the car? He didn’t think so, but hadn’t there been a tune? Perhaps Nina had been humming as she drove…

I took a deep breath, charged at Henry with all my might, and CRASH! My knee gave out, and I slammed into the side table, sending a vase hurtling toward the floor. It landed with a smash, shards of glass flying everywhere, and water seeping between the rapidly wilting flower petals. I stayed put on the floor, frozen in fear. A large shadow hovered in the doorway. Papa. Papa had just come home. Papa had seen the whole incident. The shadow came toward me, and Papa came into view. “Look what you’ve done!” Papa shouted so loudly that my ears started to ring. He grabbed my shoulders, and I knew. I knew just what he was going to do…

To celebrate Halloween, we have decided to introduce a new concept as part of the show – Flash Fiction Fridays – some bite-sized bonus content for your spooky listening pleasure.

In today’s episode we’ll be reading Helen (Something in the Cellar) which was written by Melissa West and first released on her podcast, The Skylark Bell, as part of a collaboration with The Haunted UK Podcast back in 2022. The story is based on a real-life encounter that was relayed to a friend of mine by his father and subsequently shared with me. Melissa then took that story and rewrote it… from the perspective of the ghost itself.

We truly hope you enjoy this spine-tingling bite-sized tale. Haunted UK Fiction
S01 - Episode 05 - The Big Top by Willerby
“Welcome to my Big Top,” she said, “From nowhere and everywhere. From the ice-islands of Ros 154 to the green deserts of Emerelda, from the jungled hills of Amazonian Maya to the bottomless oceans of Lanneria. From our last stop ghost-soaked Hookland, to here for one night only, your home, weird-scarred Willerby. Who knows where we’ll go next and when we’ll be back? Welcome – you will be delighted and amazed, the wonders of this multiverse brought here to your front door…”

In today’s episode we’ll be reading The Big Top, another story hailing from the strange town of Willerby. We aren’t sure who, exactly, is behind these stories, or even whether they’re authored by one person, or many. We stumbled upon the Willerby website, which features a collection of stories about the town’s inhabitants, whilst in the early stages of planning Haunted UK Fiction and were able to reach the webmaster, who would not share their identity but granted permission to share these stories after we agreed to a number of bizarre conditions we aren't allowed to give any more details about.

We truly hope you enjoy another story from the eerie and mysterious town of Willerby, which seems as though it exists in a different plane to the rest of the world. If you would like to read some of these stories for yourself, visit Willerby’s website at WelcomToWillerby.co.uk and follow it on Instagram @WillerbyVillage.

Haunted UK Fiction
S01 - Episode 03 - Shortcuts by Willerby
We were between two hedges that formed a narrow, winding passage big enough for two people to stand next to each other with their arms just touching. The hedges were tight packed, but it was still somehow dimmer than it should have been an hour after dawn.“Dad?” Said Jess. “Look up, slowly now.”I did. And gasped….

Haunted UK Fiction
S01 - Episode 02 - It Shows Up When It's Needed by Robert McDermott
I turned. A boy sat at the far end of the bench leaving a gap big enough for maybe two or three people between us. He wore a school hoodie, and his light brown hair was untidy as if blown by a strong wind. His face was at an angle where I couldn’t make out his features, only the profile of his nose and chin. I felt as if something about him was off, not eerie or wrong, just off as if he was somehow dimmer and softer. Like the light didn’t catch him quite the same way it did other things…

This episode is dedicated to the memory of Jonas

Before we begin, we’d like to make note of the sensitive nature of the content of this story as it makes mention of suicide, a topic which may be upsetting to some listeners.

Haunted UK Fiction
S01 - Episode 01 - Shadows in the Barri Gotic by Tim Hale
By the time they went to bed Jane had almost convinced herself that she was simply adjusting to the strange acoustics and unfamiliar rhythms of their new home… but she woke again to the smell of cigar smoke. This time, it was so strong that she was certain Terry must smell it too. She reached over to shake him awake, then stopped. The smoke seemed to be concentrated on her side of the bed, as if someone were sitting in the chair by the window, smoking and watching her sleep.Jane lay perfectly still, barely breathing, every sense straining to detect some other sign of presence. The building was quiet around them—no footsteps in the hallway, no voices from neighbouring apartments, no traffic from the street below. But the smell of tobacco hung heavy in the air, expensive and distinctive, nothing like the cheap cigarettes she occasionally smelled on the street...

In today’s episode we’ll be reading a tale of a haunting in Barcelona, Spain titled Shadows in the Barri Gotic which was sent in to us by Tim Hale. Tim is a Liverpool native with a passion for storytelling that has spanned over five decades after his love of reading and writing was ignited early in primary school upon joining his first book club. A love of 1980’s adventure books like The Famous Five eventually gave way to the fantasy worlds of Tolkien and later stories that fused crime, thriller, and the supernatural. He recently rekindled his writing journey, bringing stories and characters to life on the page, now influenced by his fascination with local legends and folklore, which he weaves into his work. The story you are about to hear, however, was influenced by an account his wife shared from her time living in Barcelona…

We truly hope you enjoy this spine-tingling, historical, haunting tale. If you would like to hear more from Tim Hale, be sure to follow him on social media as he’s working on The Haunting of the Punchbowl, a novella based on the legends surrounding a local ancient pub and church located not far from where he grew up in North Merseyside. We also have more stories of his to share in the coming months. Social media and contact information for Tim can be found below:
