Rich Brotherton
Hello friends! Multi-instrumentalist, producer, and Austin treasure Rich Brotherton is my guest for episode 1538! Rich has spent the last five decades playing with or producing artists like Robert Earl Keen, Toni Price, Patty Griffin, David Halley, Leann Atherton, Úlla, The Purgatory Players, and countless others. In April, after noticing that he was having trouble holding his guitar pick, Rich was diagnosed with ALS, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a.k.a. Lou Gehrig’s disease. While it's hard for him to do everything he once did as a guitar player, he's still playing some gigs including his weekly show with Irish folk band Úlla (with Pat Byrne and Andrea Magee) every Sunday at 5 pm at The Saxon Pub. We have a great conversation about the amazing benefit concert in December featuring Patty Griffin, Charley Crockett, and many more, coming to Austin from Boise Idaho in the mid-80's, how Austin's music scene made him feel at home, the Toni Price Hippie Hour, playing with Robert Earl Keen for exactly 25 years, working out of his own studio, dealing with having ALS and his amazing family and music family who support him, and much more. I had such a lovely time getting to know Rich. I'm sure you will too. I want to thank Pat Byrne for connecting us. You can find Rich online at richbrotherton.com, and Facebook. Bryan Keeling (1965-2025)
It's a sad day in music... Legendary and beloved drummer and father Bryan Keeling passed away yesterday from cancer inNashville. My heart goes out to his family and friends. Bryan was an extremely kind hearted, talented and enthusiastic person. He was a staple in the Austin music scene from the late 80's to around 2002 when he moved to LA and eventually to Nashville. What a sad loss. Rest in peace, Bryan. Below are my original notes for episode 336 from 12/23/2014.   My guest for episode 336 is rock and roll drummer extraordinaire, Bryan Keeling. I first saw Bryan play in 1989 when he was the drummer of Austin art rock band, Water The Dog. We played together in Mr. Rocket Baby from 1993-1994. We didn't really talk or hang out until our recent Mr. Rocket Baby reunion and it felt great. Bryan has spent the last 20 years playing music, he moved to LA, recorded with Pink, Macy Gray and others, he also played with Shooter Jennings for years, and now plays with Eric Sardinas and Big Motor and tours the world. Even Africa! I had a great time reconnecting with Bryan after so many years. Playing music can be a healing experience. Join Bryan and I for coffee as we catch up over the last 20 years. Let's get down!
