💗 Highlights from 11.19.25 Hug Nation Live — “Boundaries, Compassion, and Doing Our Best”
In this episode of Hug Nation Live, we share a vibration of presence, gratitude, and gentle self-reflection. Whether you're tuning in live or watching the recording, your energy is part of the circle.
Together, we explore:
Why your worth isn’t measured by grand tasks, but by the energies and attitudes you bring into each moment.
How setting boundaries—from a grounded and compassionate place—can transform your relationships and your peace of mind, especially for empaths and recovering people-pleasers.
A beautiful story of gifting groceries becomes a reminder that when we prime ourselves for kindness, opportunities to serve naturally appear.
I shared the heartfelt note I mailed myself written at last year’s Love Ambassador gathering.
Then we do a deep dive into judgment, personal history, cultural conditioning, and how compassion helps us see behaviors (like littering!) through a wider lens.
We look at how to turn “me vs. you” battles into “us vs. the problem,” inviting others into heroism rather than defensiveness.
We close with a communal self-hug, a breath, and a reminder that even if this is the only place you feel safe to be authentic—it counts, and you belong here.
If you’re watching this, you’re part of a movement that is choosing compassion, growth, and service—even when it’s hard. Thank you for being one of the people who would rather hug than hurt.

In this episode, we REALLY feel the gratitude. From blooming cactus flowers and healing rain in San Diego to retreat insights, water blessings, playful moments with children, and the power of community—this gathering is a real-time reminder of how much beauty is available when we pause to notice it.I also speak candidly about online negativity, staying committed to being a Love Ambassador, and practicing “direction, not distance” as a guiding philosophy. Through personal stories about health challenges, partnership, community support, and the everyday miracles we overlook, this episode becomes a living example of turning toward the light even when the world feels heavy.(JOIN LIVE EVERY DAY AT 9:00am PST)

I talk about redefining "Billionaire"to mean someone who helps a billion people.I also talk about a mass shooting in Charleston that happened in 2015. Sadly, we have plenty of recent tragedies that makes the topic remain vital and relevant.
I talk about Kindness Budgets, " Heroism of the Heart," and the revolutionary act of turning the other cheek.

Hug Nation was born 24 years ago in the wake of a national tragedy. I tell the story and also deal with some heavy feelings about the current state of the world.

In this 2005 recording, Halcyon sits down with his beloved grandfather, Reverend Caleb Elroy Shikles, for a timeless dialogue on spirituality, love, change, and the evolution of the soul. What begins as a simple question — “Are you going to Burning Man?” — blossoms into a profound exchange about faith, integrity, and the beauty of living with open-minded devotion.
At 92 years old and a minister for 68 years, Grandpa Caleb reflects on what he’s learned from a lifetime of service: blending Christian compassion, Buddhist awareness, and universal humanism into a worldview rooted in love, curiosity, and humility.
Together, they explore:
🔥 The spiritual parallels between Burning Man and traditional church community
💫 Jesus’ teachings of honesty, humility, and love in Matthew 5–7
🌎 Seeing God through all faiths — from Baptist roots to Buddhist practice
🌿 The interconnectedness of life, nature, and cosmic consciousness
🕊️ Overcoming religious rigidity and embracing all people — “test everything by love”
💍 Lessons from 64 years of marriage: communication, forgiveness, and tenderness
✊ Memories of working with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the courage of nonviolence
💖 Facing mortality with wonder, readiness, and faith in the eternal
Caleb also shares the story behind changing his name at 75 — a symbol of renewal and alignment with his spirit’s calling — and closes with a moving prayer celebrating the pulse of life and love that connects us all.
“We are all brothers and sisters. The Lord is Creator, Sustainer — the mystery that holds it all together.”
— Rev. Caleb E. Shikles

Recorded Live (most) every day at 9:00am PST.
This was recorded when my hair was BRIGHT pink.
For a very long time, I felt like the way I was most in service to the grand cosmic painting was to be a bright pink hue for the divine to paint with.
In my latest chapter I have shifted to a dramatically more mundane color palette.
And yet, these reflections on how authenticity allows us to be best in service still feel powerfully relevant.
I was in charge of leading one of my monthly Men's Groups where we all take turns leading.
My focus was on...*drumroll* ... GRATITUDE!
It went awesome and I shared lots of the the insights.

This episode of Hug Nation Live is a heartfelt exploration of what it means to live as a “love ambassador” in daily life. Through stories about friendship, self-image, community, and even personal setbacks, John Halcyon Styn shows how small acts of kindness and conscious gratitude can ripple outward to change both our own experience and the wider world. He challenges the fear-driven narratives we absorb from media, encourages embracing the vulnerability of learning and failing, and highlights the power of authentic connection—whether through deep conversations, shared celebrations, or simply showing up for someone in pain. At its core, the talk is a reminder that even in the midst of challenges, gratitude and compassion can transform our struggles into growth and our ordinary interactions into world-changing moments.
