Dr. Justin Tausig - Finding productivity in chaos
We are getting conflicting messages regarding productivity in this time of chaos. Some are telling us to learn new skills, master sourdough making, and take online courses. Others are encouraging us to take it easy, watch a movie, do less. For athletes, who were mentally prepared to be working hard and staying focused before competitive seasons and training plans were derailed, the path forward is uncertain. Dr. Justin Tausig, a former pro fencer turned sports and performance psychologist, is encouraging athletes to stay productive during this crisis. Focus on what you can do, rather than what you can’t, and do at least one productive thing a day.

Griffin Luce - Athletic Career Paused in the Face of a Pandemic
Two weeks ago, Griffin Luce was balancing life as a student athlete, enduring grueling practices, and excited to see how far he and his teammates could go in his final season as a college athlete. He was given a couple of days to pack up his things, leave campus, and finish out the semester at home. Life as he and his teammates knew it was over. With such a sudden and dramatic change to his life, it would be understandable if Griffin were looking hard at the past and what could have been in the future. When she abruptly retired just over a year later, she managed to ward off speculation by immediately transitioning to graduate school and founding a company mentoring young athletes. Rebecca Soni - Not Just Rebecca the Swimmer
The first episode in season 2 of Humbled is a powerful example of why these conversations about athlete identity are important. 6x Olympic medalist swimmer Rebecca Soni gets candid about the process of finding out who she is beyond “Rebecca the Swimmer”. With 3 gold and 3 silver medals spanning two Olympics, she was the first woman to break 2:20 in the 200m breaststroke. Her list of athletic accomplishments on the global stage is much longer, but that’s not what she’s all that interested in talking about. She’s curious about how her identity got wrapped up in swimming, how social media and sponsorships complicate an athlete’s relationship with sport, and the power of positive thinking in racing. Rebecca is ready to talk about who she is outside of swimming, and how she has worked hard to find out who that actually is in the 8 years since retiring from professional sport. Humbled Season 2 — Trailer
Humbled is back. Season 2 premieres Tuesday, January 28, with more great stories centered around the good and the bad of athlete identity. One of the things that became abundantly clear last season is that we- athletes, former athletes, forever athletes- are as different from one another as anyone else, yet are united by a single identity whose importance is sometimes hard to explain. In our wide-ranging conversations with athletes and those in their orbit, we will be diving even deeper in the often hidden, but lasting impacts that the athlete identity can have, in ways you’d never expect. This season, Kristin travels across the country to have intimate conversations with athletes tackling questions about identity and its often complicated relationship with sport.
