29. Discover and Demolish Your Boundary-Setting Monsters: Find Freedom to Set Sticky Boundaries
What is worse than not setting healthy boundaries? Setting boundaries that don't stick! In today's episode, we will continue to explore effective boundaries and how awareness of our own monsters can instantly add that stickiness we need. Whether you're making positive changes at work or home, with friends or family, boundaries are part of that process. Let's keep it simple and not overcomplicate things. Let's also remember that we can make decisions, try new things, make mistakes, and adjust as we go. Nobody is perfect! However, your boundaries do need some essential ingredients, and I'll share five key ones in the episode. We also need to be aware of our own monsters that prevent us from taking courageous and bold moves forward. For me, I can identify five little monsters. Some of these are hardly a nuisance. A couple of these are sticking around and I must get my shoes dirty and trample them when I set boundaries. The boundary monsters discussed today: 1. Wait! I don't want to be selfish 2. Procrastinate! I can tolerate this a while longer 3.  Rocking the boat! I can't disrupt the status quo 4.  Expensive! I can't afford it 5. Dependents! But they are depending on me. I believe that our little monsters are spawns of two BIG false beliefs that many of us unknowingly deal with: 1. I am responsible for other people  2. Me and my stuff are not as important (and that's ok). Awareness is a formidable weapon against these monsters, so let's dig in and talk about it. The FIVE Essential Ingredients for effective boundaries are not my original discoveries, but a compilation of things I've learned from my favorite boundaries experts like Karla Downing of Change My Relationship. I highly recommend her resources and videos. I've also gleaned wisdom over the years from Dr. Henry Cloud and others. So much credit for my learning and growth belongs to wiser men and women, along with the Holy Spirit who guides me daily. I'm still on the journey of learning how to set effective boundaries, and with each new life season, I find exciting new challenges and adventures. Gratefully, I now have the foundations and ingredients so that I can set boundaries more quickly and easily.  Enjoy the episode and remember that we are in this together! 28. I Didn’t Know THIS About Boundaries, But it Makes a Huge Difference.
In today's episode, I'm sharing my original learning that I earned from the School of Hard Knocks. Did you know that I conducted a 30-year experiment to find all the worst ways to set personal boundaries? Yes, that was me. You're welcome! It's not easy to set effective boundaries, the kind that allows you to live and do and be the way you intended when you set the boundary. And when our boundaries fall flat or seemingly fail, it's discouraging, and demoralizing, and we can wind up in a place worse than where we started. We don't want that. There are two things that you'll need to set clear and effective boundaries. They aren't obvious, but once you hear them you'll recognize how much you needed to listen to this podcast. Yes, these two things can absolutely transform how you approach setting boundaries, and how well you can keep them working for you as intended. Topics included in this episode: boundaries, self-awareness, difficult people, resilience, courage, communication, family, and your worth Are you enjoying the podcast? 27. Creating Boundaries: Truths, Myths, Testimony, and Freedom
For forty years, I struggled with setting and holding boundaries. Forty years is a long time. With confidence, I can say that learning the truth about boundaries and learning how to set effective boundaries has transformed my life.   Unpopular fact: setting boundaries isn't easy. Talk is easy. These days, it seems that everyone is talking about boundaries. But do they really know how to do it? What if you struggle with: People Pleasing Imposter Syndrome Perfectionism Self-worth Lack of positive experience ADHD Setting boundaries can feel overwhelming, especially when you struggle with any or all of the above challenges. I know this first-hand. Simplistic, superficial, half-baked answers won't work for us. Actually, they won't work for anyone. Most people don't know how to set effective boundaries. What if you have family or a work situation where your boundaries are constantly challenged? What if you've tried before and experienced criticism, pushback, and feel less than confident to try again? If you're like many women I've coached, you may believe that boundaries just don't work. But it may mean that you weren't creating effective boundaries. It could be that just one or two features were missing. It could be that some pre-work wasn't completed. Trust me, boundaries work. It's going to take some work, curiosity, time, and courage. It will be 100% worth it. Once I reached the end of my rope, I put everything into learning the truth about boundaries. I needed to unlearn some things too, like: Setting boundaries are selfish God wants me to put myself last Good people will reject me I can't trust myself to set boundaries Today's episode is part one of the Essential Boundaries series. No matter your past experience with boundaries, you will want to listen to every episode because: Boundaries are essential As life brings change, we will experience new boundary challenges It's my desire to bring you some of the most helpful ideas, truths, strategies, and inspiration I've learned over the years about boundaries. I hope the stories inspire you, and that God's word empowers you to create your own plan for bringing effective boundaries forward for more focus, space, and freedom. Are you enjoying the podcast? 26. How to Strive Less and Thrive More in 2024
Episode 26: There's a whole other way to live on the "other side of the street", and I can't wait to tell you more about it. While everyone else is churning out the work harder, strive more, be better and earn your pay content, I'm here to tell you it's time to abide and thrive. On one side, it's all up to you, and most likely you'll never quite feel like you're enough. On the other side, there is room to be, space to relax, and freedom to live authentically. What's the difference? I think you'll have to listen to find out. I'm a goal-setter, a driven dreamer, and love learning. Certainly, there is nothing wrong with planning, putting in effort, and caring about excellence. However, all these good things can become problematic and draining when we are over-focused on "making ourselves the best we can be." When we focus on fixing ourselves, we can easily fall into a trap of self-reliance and self-condemnation.  We may start to believe that our own efforts and self-improvement are what makes us acceptable to God. This can lead to feelings of guilt, shame, and frustration when we inevitably fall short of our own expectations. Additionally, focusing on fixing ourselves can distract us from the truth of our new identity in Christ. We are already forgiven, righteous, and complete in Him. I really can't wait for you to hear this message, as it may be exactly what you need to set yourself up for more freedom, purpose, and motivation in 2024!  Are you enjoying the podcast? 25. Supercharge Your Resilience Using Your Own Strengths
Did your mom tell you there'd be days (or weeks) like this? With your supercharged resilience, you can bounce back from unexpected changes and catastrophes like a tennis ball. Or at least, you won't be knocked out flat with adrenal fatigue or overwhelmed by brain fog. The key? Capitalize on your strengths. You already have a signature trait or two that helps you bounce back from adversity. Let's cultivate that strength with three simple strategies that won't cost you anything. In today's episode, let's get a little nerdy, just enough to discover three qualities of a resilient person. Why? So that you can discover your top resilience trait and make the most of it. Resilience helps you  bounce back from hardship manage stress better face problems while remaining calm Listen along as I share more with examples and personal stories, including a snapshot of one way that I self-sabotaged during a challenging time. Today I have three simple and cost-effective (free) ways to grow your resilience that I've been using over the past ten years. I know that they work and that anyone can learn how to strengthen resilience. You can only grow so tall. You can only get so smart. You can keep growing resilience and emotional intelligence your whole lifetime. Not everyone wants to, but we do. Yes, it takes some self-reflection, attention, and consistent practice, but the pay-off is peace, calm, focus, stronger relationships, more energy, and a brain that says, "Thank you. This feels so much better."  Not only will you enjoy these benefits, but you're family, friends, co-workers, and boss will appreciate the more resilient you, too. Are you enjoying the podcast? 24. Go Ahead and Have a Bad Day and Grow Resilience
Have you ever been told to go ahead and let a bad day be a bonafide bad day? If you're like me, bad days are enemy number one. I strongly dislike the wasted time, unpredictable emotions, chaos, frustration, and inefficiency of a bad day so much that I want to manage it right out of existence. However, we can make a bad day into a horrible day depending on how we respond and interact with it.  What do we do with a bad day? Most of us will respond in one of these three ways. Which one do you think is the bad way to engage a bad day? A. Power through it B. Apply a positive mindset C. Throw in the towel and give up The answer is actually. . . D - All the Above (and I've done all three most of my life). Trust me, most of us are going about our bad days in ways that make things harder on ourselves. It's not our fault. Most of us haven't been specifically trained on how to manage bad days. We weren't offered a high school course on Emotional Intelligence and Resilience. It feels normal, even conventional, to try to outwit, outplay, and outlast a bad day. We're conditioned, even encouraged,  to deny, minimize, and spiritualize a bad day. I'm eager to share with you a better way to engage your next bad day that is kinder, more authentic, and growth-producing. Are you interested?  Like all my episodes, I want to fill you with encouragement and share real-life stories and strategies that help you create your shifts toward a life that is abundantly free and aligned with God's true view of you.  Come on into this episode exactly as you are. If you're having a bad day, don't wash your face. Don't clean up anything. Bring your mood, your mess, the good and the bad right on in here. All of us "I Meant to Do That" listeners know how to take it all in stride.  This episode is for YOU. Let's learn together how to become fantastic masters of having the best bad days ever. 23. Soulful Support: The Courage to Share High-Value Encouragement
In today's episode, we dive deep into the transformative power of encouragement. Join us as we explore the courage it takes to share high-value support that touches the soul. The other day, I opened an email that knocked me back in my seat. I was blown away by words that I didn't even realize I needed -- words that brought high-value encouragement and affirmation. It got me thinking: "I wonder what our worlds would be like if we dared to give more of this kind of encouragement?" High-value encouragement isn't the everyday, cheap, come-easy kind that is easily brushed off or quickly forgotten. It leaves an imprint, and an impact, and blesses the receiver and the giver. So, why don't we give it readily and easily? Because it requires vulnerability. In this episode, we are going to cover: What does it mean to provide high-value encouragement? The impact of genuine, soulful support on individuals and communities. Discussing the courage and vulnerability required to share heartfelt encouragement. A heart-charged commitment to incorporate soulful support into our daily lives. As we conclude today's episode, remember that your words have the power to uplift and inspire. Embrace the courage to share high-value encouragement and watch how it transforms not only the lives of others but also your own. Are you enjoying the podcast? 22. Three Keys For Redefining Relationships Without Trying to Change People
In today's episode, we are making peace with the reality that we cannot change people, and in fact, it's empowering to realize that we are powerless to change people. With the best of intentions, we try to fix or change people, but the consequences are usually negative for both parties. Let's be honest. It rarely works in the long run. One person feels disrespected, irritated, and controlled, and the other person has wasted time and effort trying to do the impossible: change someone besides herself.  Yes, we know that we can't change people, but that doesn't stop us from trying. Sometimes we work intentionally and make it our mission; the person may be a close friend or family member who lacks motivation to work on themselves. Other times we work on changing someone completely unaware of what we are doing.  There are valid reasons why we may want to change a co-worker, spouse, relative, or friend, but regardless of intent or need, the odds are not in your favor.  For many years, I struggled with a belief that other people's behavior was my responsibility. I believe partly because I was raised to think so. Also, I lived as an extreme people-pleaser for many years. I know first-hand how taking charge of changing others creates anxiety, breeds conflict, and pulls us from living our own lives with focus, peace, and purpose. So, let's talk about this candidly and commit to practicing these three keys. Three keys will help you redefine relationships without any requirement for YOU to change THEM. That's right! And I'm sharing them with you in this episode.  This isn't rocket science, but it's an empowering reminder of how you can care about others without losing yourself in the process. 21.Get Holiday Burn-Out Off Your Agenda: Enjoy More Calm This Christmas Season
It's that time of year again, and I know that you're feeling the rising stress as we approach Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year. More than ever, we believe that overdone is well done. 20. Get Past Your Weaknesses With the ”So What” Strategy: You Can’t Be Amazing at Everything.
Episode 20: In this part 2, we continue our conversation about how to break free from beliefs and actions that keep us from thriving and moving forward with focus and purpose, specifically with our weaknesses. How we interact with our weaknesses really matters. We've been taught and conditioned from our earliest years that weaknesses are meant to be turned into strengths. Think about it: how many times were you encouraged or even forced to improve things you weren't really good at?  Are we supposed to improve our weaknesses? How much improvement is necessary? We all have strengths and weaknesses, but how do we determine which weaknesses deserve attention and which we can leave alone? How often do you feel guilty, embarrassed, and frustrated because you don't have someone else's specific trait or skill? Did you know over 50% of your personality traits are part of your DNA? Some strengths didn't come in the package! In part 2, we are going to focus on how we can determine if (yes, I did say if) a weakness can become a strength if we even need it to be a strength, and how strong it has the potential to be. You know that you really can't be awesome at everything, so that means you will suck at many things. If we can't accept this, if we can't celebrate who we are, then we will work ourselves to exhaustion trying to continually improve our non-strengths (AKA: Weaknesses). In this episode, I will share with you: 1. The weakness catagories  2. The problem with the weakness bucket that leads to shame 3. Why the "So What" approach makes sense 4. How we moralize and spiritualize ourselves into stuckness 5. How to use "So What" to determine which weaknesses don't matter and so much more. It's all packed into this episode and delivered with love. This episode has deep application for your professional goals and relationships as well as your personal mission and the relationships that matter most to you. I know how much this reframing empowered me and my clients to change how they approach weaknesses. I want you to know this too, because God wants you to be F R E E! Are you enjoying the podcast? 19. Get Past Your Perfectionism: Strategies and Mindset Hacks From a Recovering Perfectionist
Episode 19: Do you want to be proactive, intentional, and in charge of how you respond to pain, hard things, and obstacles? How does perfectionism sneak into your desire and efforts, ruining your best plans? I certainly know about perfectionism. Over the last decade, I have clearly seen that my patterns of thinking and doing could no longer work. In the hardest and most painful years, I realized that perfectionism was more in control than me, and it made life more painful. In this episode, I talk candidly about perfectionism and four areas that every person, regardless of age, is forced to deal with. However, the perfectionist has her own spin on how she approaches each of these, and we'll stay in perfectionism until we face our thinking patterns and habits.  The four areas are:  1. Time  2. Hard Times/pain  3. Weaknesses  4. Values and the overarching element we also must consider is God. This episode is close to my heart. I am forever grateful for the wise folks who were part of my journey of learning and growth. I've not "arrived", but I celebrate where I am today and hope this episode encourages you along your path toward peace, purpose, and joy. Are you enjoying the podcast? 18. Can’t Take the Pressure? Good! You’re Meant to Live Free!
Episode 18. Some pressure in the right amount and for the right reason can be incredibly motivating. However, over 60% of women feel stressed and overwhelmed by unreasonable external and internal pressure nearly daily. We feel under pressure at work, in our family, and even at church, and when we look around it seems normal. But did you ever stop to ask if you agreed to this storyline? Do you want to feel all this pressure? Have you stopped to ask, "What if I don't have to live this way?"   Let's push back at the cultural norm of "overbusy, stressed, and living on a prayer." You don't have to live with toxic pressure. In today's episode you'll learn more about Why we believed all along that pressure/stress is unavoidable How the right amount of pressure unlocks motivation What happens in your brain when pressure stacks up How to find the real pressure and expose the fake pressure The one relationship that is 100% pressure-free In all stages and seasons of life, we are made to live free, not in a pressure cooker. 17. When People Resist Your Good Changes: Five Ways to Respond
In this episode, I'm talking about something nobody mentioned to me in over 40 years of living. People often resist good growth and beneficial changes in you! We often aren't prepared for this, leading to confusion, frustration, setbacks, and conflict. When we make positive changes to our workflow at our job, when we work hard and learn how to do something successfully, or when we grow personally in our ability to stop over-scheduling ourselves,  we expect others around us to support and appreciate the good changes.  But sometimes people just aren't having it. They resist the good changes. In this episode, you'll learn more about why some people push back and even push against us.  Sometimes the responses reveal the nature of the relationship.  Sometimes our loving friends and family are having momentary lapses into self-centered thinking as they adjust to the new you. Either way, we will need to respond to the resistance in ways we feel good about. We don't want to overreact and regret what we say, but we also don't want to bury our feelings and avoid dealing with their behavior, either.  We can respond in logical and healthy ways when facing resistance, no matter who it's coming from. Intentionally responding to resistance helps us keep on our own path, protect our peace, and fairly assess the relationship. You'll learn more about Giving short reply Letting people disagree Taking a break Recognizing Lies Trusting yourself (without their affirmation) This is the episode that I wish that I had in my fourties during an incredibly difficult time. My own growth, boundaries, and healthy changes created so much resistance and pushback. Eventually, I had to let go of close family members because the process revealed their unkind and narcisstic nature. I am grateful to have these responses available to me today when I face resistance. I also continue to be self-aware so that I catch myself when resisting the good change in others.  Are you enjoying the podcast? Please help me out by leaving a rating and a review! 16. How to Navigate the Noise of Others’ Opinions
In this episode, we get honest about the problems people can bring with their opinions, why agreeable people tend to collect opinions, and how to filter out and disqualify the harmful ones.  We've been conditioned to hold people's opinions in high regard. It can feel prideful or mean to discount them quickly. However, opinions can get us off track and slow us down. They can be extremely discouraging and even harmful. And to be honest, there are so many opinionated people who are ready to give them out free of charge, we need some way of calming down the noise so that we don't lose our own values and ideas in the process! Women who want to learn and make informed, sound, wise decisions, succeed in their personal and professional lives, and enjoy meaningful relationships often seek out opinions. They receive unsolicited opinions graciously with an open mind. And we often discredit our own experiences, wisdom, and smart thinking in the process. We often forget this key fact: People are not very smart. It's true!  It's also really important to realize that not all advice comes from a genuine place. We need to be real about it, because whether it's intentional or not, many times people are mixing in their own insecurities, jealousy, frustration, short-comings, and competitiveness with their opinion. If you care about "getting it right", you may fall into the trap of seeking, attracting, and accepting so many opinions that you stop trusting yourself. I've been there time and again. Today's episode is a wonderful reminder to us all that we probably know more than we are realizing. We are wiser than we give ourselves credit, and it isn't uncaring, prideful, or close-minded to trust our own opinion.  I'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode. What can you say to that over-engaged family member or co-worker the next time they offer an unhelpful opinion?  Would you use my line or come up with your own?  Are you enjoying the podcast? 15. Stop Your Subtle Self-Sabotage With This Simple Approach
This is an episode about how to face two common ways we self-sabotage and reduce if not eliminate it from our lives.  There are so many kinds of creative thinking patterns, behaviors, and habits that effectively stop us from doing what we want to do. We also stop ourselves from learning, and growing. Why do we do it? Even George Michael from the band, Wham, cries out in the epic 80's song, Everything She Wants, "Oh why do I do the things I do?" This is a great question. If you have the answer, please let me know! There are two very common and subtle ways that we self-sabotage, and focusing on these two in the episode seems smart. Of course, I will share some real-life stories. Let's face unrealistic expectations and procrastination head-on. Let's force these two culprits to back off so that we can do the meaningful things, the important dreams, the necessary tasks, and live more in the "I Meant to Do That" space.  As always, this is a zero-shame episode.  Shame is no friend of ours and it just doesn't fit in with the truth of living in the freedom that comes from Grace.  I'd love to hear from you. Do you relate to these two sneaky sabotagers? If they operated as the three musketeers, what would be your third?  Are you enjoying the podcast? Please help me out by leaving a rating and a review!
