Last week, Steve Bannon, the far-right provocateur and one-time Donald Trump adviser, said in an interview with the Economist that the president would seek an unconstitutional third term. “Trump is going to be president in 28, and people ought to just get accommodated with that,” Bannon said. “At the appropriate time, we’ll lay out what the plan is.”
Like clockwork, Trump commented on the idea soon after, telling reporters following him on Air Force One as he flew from Kuala Lumpur to Tokyo: “I would love to do it.”
Initially, he said: “I haven’t really thought about it. But I have the best poll numbers I’ve ever had.” (This is not true; Trump’s approval has sunk considerably, with a new poll released this week showing him at a net -19 point approval rating, the lowest of his second term.) Still, Trump said he would be legally able to run again in a scheme in which he was placed on the ticket as a vice-presidential nominee, only for the puppet placed in the presidential slot to resign once taking office, thereby granting him the presidency.

Ahead of last month’s “No Kings” protests, Republicans launched a remarkably aggressive effort to slander Donald Trump’s critics, repeatedly insisting that the activists participating in the events “hate America.”
The smear campaign apparently didn’t work. NBC News reported on the results of its latest national poll: The high election interest and focus on Trump also come as millions of Americans have participated in ‘No Kings’ protests against the Trump administration. In this survey, 43% say they consider themselves supporters of the No Kings protest movement — with the group largely composed of Democrats but also including around 4 in 10 independents.
If the goal was to persuade the public to reject No Kings, the NBC News poll suggests those efforts haven’t gone especially well.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris' new memoir, 107 days, is out Tuesday with a mix of insights and unanswered questions about her historically short run for president after former President Joe Biden dropped out.
Harris has largely been out of the public spotlight since losing the election to Donald Trump last November, but the book release kicks off a cross-country tour.

Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk predicted his own assassination in chilling text messages to friend and former colleague Candace Owens — years before he was assassinated in Utah.
Owens posted screengrabs of a text exchange from April 6, 2018 on her podcast in which the person she identifies as Kirk predicted he would be killed because of his work with Turning Point USA.
“If I tell you the true prophecy I know in my gut it’s really sad,” Kirk wrote, adding, “But I hope its wrong.”

President Donald Trump, writing on Truth Social, informed “ICE, Border Patrol, Law Enforcement, and all U.S. Military” that “from this point forward, anybody burning the American Flag will be subject to one year in prison” in accordance with a previous executive order.
Trump’s executive order instructing the immediate arrest and one-year imprisonment of individuals who burn the American flag has sparked debate over free speech, patriotism and the limits of executive authority.
The order challenges decades-old Supreme Court decisions that upheld flag burning as a constitutionally protected form of expression, placing the issue at the intersection of law-and-order policy and First Amendment rights.

He’s the hottest politician in the US, who managed to attract thousands of young and first-time voters to the Democratic party in his unexpected win in the New York City mayoral primary.
With the Democrats suffering from historically low approval ratings, one might have thought the party would rally round Zohran Mamdani, to learn lessons from the media-savvy 33-year-old and bask in his soaring popularity.
That hasn’t happened.
The most influential political figures in New York state politics have instead studiously avoided any public endorsement of Mamdani, the self-described democratic socialist who has a 22-point lead over his nearest challenger.

President Trump said Wednesday that he had not yet decided whether the U.S. military will join Israel's ongoing attacks on Iran, and he didn't believe it was too late to reach a deal with the Islamic Republic on its nuclear program, though he warned it was "very late to be talking."
"I may do it, I may not do it. Nobody knows what I'm going to do," Mr. Trump told reporters when he was asked about the U.S. taking part in the strikes on Iran's nuclear and military facilities.
The president told reporters later Wednesday in the Oval Office that, while some don't want the U.S. to become involved, "it's possible that you're going to have to fight for them not to have nuclear."

About 50 U.S. Marines squared off against hundreds of protesters in front of a federal building in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, with the crowd yelling in unison for them to go home.
The Marines had been sent to the city by U.S. President Donald Trump along with federalized members of the California National Guard earlier this week over the objections of the state governor and the city's mayor, as anger over immigration raids drew thousands of demonstrators into the streets.
California Governor Gavin Newsom and local leaders have called Trump's move an inflammatory provocation for the protests over the past week - demonstrations that the local sheriff on Friday said were 99% peaceful, with a only a handful of people engaged in violence and vandalism.
Trump summoned 700 Marines from California who were trained to help in the L.A. mission, including de-escalation and crowd control.

It has been eerily easy to find street parking in Los Angeles’s fashion district this week. In the nearby flower district, longtime vendors have locked up stalls. And in East LA, popular taquerías have temporarily closed.
Neighborhoods across LA and southern California have gone quiet since the Trump administration ramped up immigration raids in the region two weeks ago.
The aggressive arrests by federal agents have ignited roaring protests which the administration tried to quell by mobilizing thousands of national guard troops. Last weekend, Americans protested the raids and other administration policies in one of the biggest ever single-day demonstrations in US history. But immigration enforcement in LA has only intensified

Elon Musk on Tuesday lashed out at President Donald Trump’s agenda bill — which the president is pressuring GOP senators to support — calling it a “disgusting abomination.”
“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination,” the tech billionaire posted on X. “Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”
He added in a subsequent post: “Congress is making America bankrupt.”
In another, he said: “In November next year, we fire all politicians who betrayed the American people.”
Several White House officials said they were caught off guard by the harsh remarks. While Musk’s sentiments on the bill were no secret to senior staff in the West Wing, they weren’t expecting him to take such a strong public stance, according to those officials, especially given conversations Musk has had with White House staff and GOP lawmakers.

U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Dallas, says she would pursue at least an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump if she becomes chair of the House Oversight Committee in the next Congress.
Crockett aims to be the top Democrat on that panel, known as the ranking member for those in the minority party. U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia, 75, died last month, leaving the position vacant.
The sophomore representative alluded to the traditional deference given more senior lawmakers in such races, but said she has the skills required to counter Trump.

A U.S. judge on Tuesday allowed a group of 14 states to move ahead with a lawsuit challenging Elon Musk's efforts to slash federal spending as the head of President Donald Trump's new government efficiency agency, rejecting the Trump administration's effort to dismiss the case.
U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, however, dismissed the states' claims against Trump himself, saying her court would not try to interfere with "the performance of his official duties" as president.
The states' lawsuit could proceed against Musk and DOGE because it made a plausible claim that Musk's cost-cutting activities were "unauthorized by any law," according to Chutkan's ruling in Washington, D.C., federal court.

Early battle lines are forming over a centerpiece of the sprawling domestic policy bill that House Republicans narrowly passed, with Medicaid spending cuts emerging as a flash point that could define the 2026 midterm elections.
Democrats are fine-tuning their message as they blast the legislation, which now heads to the GOP-led Senate, as a tax cut for the wealthy that would be funded by cutting health care, after Republicans broadly promised they wouldn't cut Medicaid.
A recent memo from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee vows to make the GOP’s “tax scam” and Medicaid cuts “the defining contrast of the 2026 election cycle” in its efforts to win the House majority next year.

Senate Republicans are deeply divided over President Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” which the House passed by a single vote last week, setting up a battle in the upper chamber between moderates and conservatives that is likely to drag on well into July.
GOP senators are vowing to rewrite the bill, but they’re still weeks away from putting together a package that can muster the 51 votes it needs to pass, according to GOP senators and aides.
The more senators change the legislation, the more difficult it will be to pass again through the House — where Republicans control a slim 220-212 majority. Identical legislation must be approved by both chambers before it can go to Trump for his signature.

Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives came together early Thursday to pass President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful” tax bill out of the chamber on a narrow vote.
Every Democrat on the floor voted no, as did Republican Reps. Warren Davidson of Ohio and Thomas Massie of Kentucky. Rep. Andy Harris, R-Md., who chairs the conservative House Freedom Caucus, voted present. The final vote tally was 215-214.
The passage was a major victory for Republican leaders, who spent the past two months crafting the bill and the past two days making last-minute changes to it.

The Department of Homeland Security is reviewing a reality TV pitch where immigrants would compete for American citizenship, according to a spokesperson who said in a statement to CNN that “the show in question is in the very beginning stages of that vetting process and has not received approval or denial by staff.”
A producer who has pitched the idea to DHS said he envisions the show as being a “positive love letter to America” while dismissing criticism that it would be “punching down” on contestants.
Rob Worsoff, himself a Canadian immigrant whose credits include “The Millionaire Matchmaker,” “Duck Dynasty” and “The Biggest Loser,” said he’s pitched the idea for his show as far back as the Obama Administration. He said he’s had three conversations with the current DHS about his pitch — “and they’ve gone far” — but said Secretary Kristi Noem has not been involved in any of the discussions.

The United States and Israel have discussed the possibility of Washington leading a temporary post-war administration of Gaza, according to five people familiar with the matter.
The "high-level" consultations have centered around a transitional government headed by a U.S. official that would oversee Gaza until it had been demilitarized and stabilized, and a viable Palestinian administration had emerged, the sources said.
According to the discussions, which remain preliminary, there would be no fixed timeline for how long such a U.S.-led administration would last, which would depend on the situation on the ground, the five sources said. The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to discuss the talks publicly, compared the proposal to the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq that Washington established in 2003, shortly after the U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

Texas Democratic Representative Al Green issues a statement directed at Donald Trump:
“I will not allow a twice-impeached, 34-time convicted felon, full-time Don the Con man, and tinhorn de facto dictator to destroy American democracy. Impeachment is the constitutionally accorded remedy for a tinhorn dictator, and I'm coming for you, Mr. President! The world will know why you should be impeached when I present my articles of impeachment on the floor of the House of Representatives”
During his speech, Green said that this wouldn't be the only articles of impeachment that he would be presenting. He's got one more planned, possibly two. If Trump stays in office, it's going to be a lot more than that.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Sen. Cory Booker are holding a sit-in on the steps of the US Capitol — the latest move by Democrats to stand up to President Donald Trump as they face pressure from constituents.
The Democratic lawmakers started their demonstration just before sunrise on Sunday, highlighting what Booker called a moment of “moral urgency,” and invited community members and activists to engage in conversation about the stakes as Congress returns from recess.
“We are in this moment where this Congress is going to come back tomorrow from a two-week recess and the Republican leaders on (the House) side of the Capitol are saying that they’re going to force a bill through,” Booker said.
