For me Boxing Day was as exciting as Christmas Day itself....though Spurs would go on to ruin that on several occasions! In this bonus episode I talk you through all our Boxing Day games throughout the 90s and I also touch on some games at Selhurst Park (not always against Palace) too.
Please help to grow this podcast by telling someone about it. Leaving a (positive!) review or rating also really helps.

We round up Season 1 of Is Gascoigne Going To Have a Crack? by looking back at the breakdown of the Alan Sugar - Terry Venables partnership which saw one of the messiest divorces in the club's history and set the tone for a generation at White Hart Lane.
I was joined by the author of the official Club biography Dame Julie Welch and my podcast tutor Milo as we explore Venables' and Sugar's backgrounds and their unlikely and partnership that, on paper, appeared to be the 'Dream Ticket' but proved to be a thing of nightmares literally within days.
What were the ramifications for the club? How much do you remember and were you firmly in Camp Venables like me...at the time?
Looking for some Spurs reading material? I have written two books that cover Spurs' journey through the 1980s and 1990s respectively. You'll find them both on my website - https://90sspursbook.square.site/ - both are available at Amazon (as hardback and as e-book) or other book retailers.

Jonny Blain from An Echo of Glory joins me as we reminisce about the inaugural Premier League season 92/93. It was a season that...eventually....provided some great hope as the Anderton-Barmby-Sheringham trio set White Hart Lane alight in Spring. We discussed scoring 4 goals in 5 minutes against Southampton and Nayim's hat-trick at Man City. However, it was ultimately a season of disappointment as Arsenal got FA Cup SF revenge. And what about the Fiorucci Cup?!
There's some cultural references too - Gladiators, Ghost Watch and WWF.

Paul Gascoigne and Gary Lineker are two of the greatest players to have performed in lilywhite in the club's history. Gazza arrived in Summer 1988 and Lineker a year later and they formed one of the great Spurs attacking partnerships while also starring for England at Italia 90. What were they like to watch and to play alongside? My guests for this episode were Guy Butters, a teammate of both and esteemed South American Football journalist Tim Vickery who was a regular at White Hart Lane during this period.
We discuss the state of Spurs in the late 80s before they arrived, a little about Guy's Spurs career, Gazza and Lineker's individual traits and what made them such a potent partnership for club and country.
Read more of Guy's memories of Spurs and about Gazza and Lineker's arrivals in the 80s in my book Hot Shot Tottenham. I was joined by Last Word on Spurs' Jason McGovern - referred to as 'The Oracle' to dissect the 91/92 season.
Following the dramatic FA Cup success in May 1991 it was all-change at White Hart Lane with a new ownership dream team wiping out the debt but Gazza had played his last game in lilywhite. Back in European football and with the best striker in England (Gary Lineker - not John Hendry!) could Spurs build on their success and make it back-to-back trophy years?
It's the hope that kills you eh! Despite a good start the league season descended into mediocrity though there were enjoyable cup runs.
Jason and I pour over the detail of the main games, characters and events for a largely forgettable campaign that needs to be unpicked. Listen in to learn more about:

From Teddy shushing the Gallowgate to 7-goal hammerings I'll remind you of visits to Newcastle in the 90s. There were 8 games which include 1 win, 3 draws and 4 defeats. in this bonus episode I reflect on some of the magic, mayhem and mediocrity of those games. If you're on your way to St James' Park and now on your way home and you've seen a ball kicked you've done better than I did!
At the end I'll play you around 5 minutes audio of a new episode I've just recorded with a Newcastle fan in which we looked at both clubs respective 90s journeys told through the prism of 5 fixtures between the two clubs. The full episode will be released in 2026.

Irving Scholar - a boyhood Spurs obsessive - took over the club in 1982 with ambitions to make Spurs the best team in the country and to revolutionise English football. However, in 1991, having won the FA Cup the club found itself in a mountain of debt and fighting for its very survival. Scholar was forced to sell and give up his dream but he remains one of the most divisive characters in the club's history. To truly understand the neurotic state of Spurs during this period a proper exploration of Scholar's running of the club is needed. I was joined by the esteemed Sports and Finance writer Mihir Bose who co-wrote Scholar's revealing 1992 memoir Behind Closed Doors.
Mihir expertly discusses:
Only Glenn Hoddle is mentioned more times than Scholar in my book about Spurs in the 80s. You can also read about the post-Scholar world in Is Gascoigne Going To Have a Crack? Spurs in the 90s - buy either or both directly from me here - https://90sspursbook.square.site/

In May 1991 Spurs and Paul Gascoigne both faced existential crisis'. The club was £11m in debt and in desperate need of income and Paul Gascoigne, the best and most famous player in the country was crocked. His agreed sale to Lazio was put on hold and with his career dangling by a thread it needed the care and expertise of Spurs' Consultant Physio John Sheridan to nurse him back to full fitness.
John joined Spurs when he followed David Pleat from Luton in 1986. He was dealt a number of challenges, notably having to purchase his medical facility from Exchange n Mart and arriving early to power the portable generator! John's story is remarkable and we discuss his excellent book 'The Limping Physio'. Tune in to learn about:
Why John is called the limping physio
Working with David Pleat and Terry Venables
Medical mayhem at White Hart Lane and Mill Hill
Cancelling his wedding anniversary plans to look after Gazza
Gazza's rehab

It's International Break so here's a bonus nostalgia episode to get you through the trudge of low-jeopardy international football. Spurs win the FA Cup for a record 8th occasion. I was joined by Erik Thorstvedt and Spurs Show co-host Mike Leigh to look back at the 1991 FA Cup Final providing perspective from the pitch and from the stands. Incredibly this was the last occasion (at time of recording) that Spurs have been in an FA Cup Final let alone winning one. As you will discover this game was full of narrative before a ball was even kicked. Relive...
Gazza's mood before the game
Cup Final morning routines
Gazza's injury
Princess Diana flirting with Erik
Terry Venables' team talk
Trophy Parade

Sunday 14 April 1991. Wembley Stadium. The nation watches on for the most anticipated FA Cup Semi-Final of all-time. Perhaps the most significant Spurs result since winning the UEFA Cup in 1984?
For this episode I was joined by Nayim and Daniel Wynne to look back at a glorious afternoon as we overcame all odds to stuff Arsenal and reach the FA Cup Final. With views from the pitch, the dugout and the stands relive the jeopardy of the first ever North London Derby in an FA Cup SF, Gazza's heroics, Samways off the ball runs and Barry Davies' immortal commentary.
This is the game that provided the goal that gave us the line for the title of this podcast and my first book!

Spurs 90s cult heroes don't come any bigger than Erik Thorstvedt...literally...he's 6 ft 4! Despite an infamous debut mistake Erik Thorstvedt quickly established himself as a terrace hero at White Hart Lane and he was an outstanding goalkeeper too! We discussed his Spurs career that peaked with the 1991 FA Cup success. Included in this episode:
Adapting to life in England
Being the victim of Gazza's pranks and the dressing room culture
FA Cup glory
Competing with Ian Walker for the #1 spot
Becoming the face of FIFA 95
Erik is one of 109 players to have appeared for Spurs in the 90s and one of 83 in the 80s. Read about all of them in my books - Hot Shot Tottenham (Spurs in the 80s) and Is Gascoigne Going To Have a Crack (Spurs in the 90s). Buy directly from me here - https://90sspursbook.square.site/

Ok guys, I can't polish a turd. Here's a painful reminder of home games against Chelsea in the 90s. A run that saw us win precisely 0 games out of 12 and establish one of the worst hoodoo's in our club's history. Are we still paying Karma for taking Gordon Durie off them in summer 91?
There's Roberts and Hazard returning to haunt us, handbags between Teddy and Dennis Wise and Christian Gross' infamous first game in charge...and I didn't even mention losing 4-0 in the Makita Cup Final! Well at least we got Jason Cundy from them. erm ok, like I say no way of sugar coating this but please do listen anyway! At least I had a lovely time on my half-term break to the beautiful city of Bergen which I discuss towards the end.

Joining me for this episode is Author Ewan Flynn who wrote the incredible book When the Year Ends in One - a deep dive into the memorable and hugely significant 90/91 season that saw Spurs win the FA Cup against all odds amidst a genuine existential crisis.
Ewan and I go through this incredible, and scarcely believable season, that would see many soap opera directors dismiss as implausible. Highlights include:
Gazzamania - the best player in the world and most famous person in the country
A title challenge...until November
Ruining Southampton fans' Christmas'
the developing financial crisis
Chas n' Dave's Cup Final song hubris
THAT semi-final and FA Cup glory!

Spurs were perennial South East Counties Champions and won the prestigious FA Youth Cup in 1990. Top goalscorer and star-player was Anthony Potts who scored in the final and was soon offered a pro-contract where he hoped to feature in the first team, win trophies at White Hart Lane and enjoy a successful career for club and country. However, serious injury wrecked his intended trajectory. Tony wrote his own memoir - Losing My Spurs - and in this interview he speaks articulately about his experiences. Tune in to learn more about:
Why Spurs youth set-up was so good in the 80s
Training with Terry Venables and learning from Lineker
His friendship with Gazza
