Most people imagine serial killers as shadowy figures lurking in alleys or creeping through the night.

Yet the most dangerous predators often don’t hide at all—they blend in.

They mow their lawns, wave to neighbors, go to church, and raise families.

They seem ordinary, even likable.

And it’s precisely that normalcy that makes them so terrifying. History’s most chilling killers weren’t outcasts—they were the men next door, hiding monstrous urges behind masks of civility.

When Norman Bates was declared legally insane in 1960, most people assumed that was the end of his story.

He’d live out his days locked away in a psychiatric hospital, while the Bates Motel and the old house on the hill rotted quietly into history.

But they were wrong.

Because after twenty-two years of treatment, doctors determined that Norman Bates was no longer a danger to society.

In 1982, at the age of 50, he was released back into the world.

Celebrity Rap Sheet S01 Ep 01 Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle

On Monday, September 5, 1921 (Labor Day), Arbuckle took a break from his hectic film schedule and, despite suffering second-degree burns to both buttocks from an on-set accident, drove to San Francisco with two friends, Lowell Sherman and Fred Fishback.

The three checked into three rooms at the St. Francis Hotel: 1219 for Arbuckle and Fishback to share, 1221 for Sherman, and 1220 designated as a party room.[citation needed] Several women were invited to the suite.

During the carousing, a 30-year-old aspiring actress named Virginia Rappe was found seriously ill in room 1219 and was examined by the hotel doctor, who concluded that her symptoms were mostly caused by intoxication and administered morphine to calm her. Rappe was not hospitalized until two days after the incident.
