20260106 One Story: A Conversation | Changing Names (Genesis 16-37)
Cornerstone Wesleyan Church, North Gower is taking 2026 to read through and preach through the Bible using the "One Story That Leads To Jesus" Bible reading plan (created by "The Bible Project"). To this end, Pastor Nate and Pastor Dan are recording their usual "sermon prep" conversation as a podcast so you can get a birds eye view of the process, and perhaps grow in your own understanding and faith. This conversation is rough and unfinished, and not everything we talk about will make its way into the final teaching. But it hopefully gives you some additional food for thought. You can find the Bible Project here https://bibleproject.com/  You can find Cornerstone's Bible reading plan on YouVersion at bit/ly/bible2026  If that link doesn't work, try this one: https://bible.com/reading-plans/63058/together/77575397/invitation?token=2fhhVCf64-7PERhIujBwQA&source=share Or you can scan the QR code on the Podcast thumbnail! We have two growgroup Bible study options based on One Story: Tues morning: 9:30am - 11am at Cornerstone (6556 Prince of Wales Drive, North Gower) Wed evening: 7 - 8:30pm at the Manse (next door to Cornerstone)

Grow in Groups G1 Abram meets two kings after the battle—the king of Sodom and Melchizedek. Based on the text, how do these two encounters differ, and what do those differences reveal about power, blessing, and allegiance? G2 Melchizedek (King of Righteousness, King of Peace and Priest of the Most High) blesses Abram before Abram gives him a tenth. Why do you think the order matters, and what does it show us about the nature of God’s blessing? G3 Melchizedek is both king and priest—a rare combination in Scripture. How does this role help us understand what kind of king and priest Jesus would later be? G4 Abram gives Melchizedek a tenth of everything without being asked. What does this suggest about Abram’s spiritual discernment—his ability to recognize when God is at work? G5 The author of Hebrews later reflects deeply on Melchizedek (see Hebrews 7). Why do you think this brief Genesis story becomes so important later in the Bible’s story? G6 This passage leaves many questions unanswered about Melchizedek. How does the mystery itself function in the story—what does it invite us to do as readers and followers of God? Show up and Serve S1 This series invites us to live as people of one story that leads to Jesus. As you look at your own life right now, where are you tempted to live out of competing stories—and what would it look like to re-center your story around Jesus as we head into 2026?

Does this challenge any assumptions? G3 Isaiah 9 was spoken in the context of war, oppression, and unrest. How does that deepen your understanding of Jesus as Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace? G4 Where do you see the temptation (in culture or personally) to emphasize either God’s love or God’s justice at the expense of the other? G5 When you think about cultural shifts (like Bill C-9) that may make Christian conviction uncomfortable or misunderstood, what emotions rise in you? Grow G1 The hymn “Just as I am” describes “fightings within and fears without.” When have you experienced that kind of inner and outer pressure? How did it impact your view of God at the time? G2 The sermon explored the difference between the God we want and the God who is. What are some ways we try to remake God into our own image? G3 Paul’s thorn was used by God to keep him from pride. How do you respond to the idea that God sometimes allows hardship for our sanctification? G4 “My grace is sufficient for you.” What does God’s sufficient grace look like in real, everyday terms—not as a slogan, but as lived experience? G5 Where in your life right now do you most feel your weakness—and how might Christ’s power be made perfect there? G6 The sermon reminded us that Jesus may not rescue us from every hardship, but He always remains with us in it. What difference does His presence make in seasons of pain, uncertainty, or discouragement? Was there a phrase, image, or idea that struck you most?Grow G1 Foreigners & Exiles: Peter calls Christians “foreigners and exiles.” What does that image evoke for you? Where in your life do you feel that sense of being out of place because you follow Jesus? G2 The Real Battleground: Peter insists the primary “culture war” is within us (sinful desires waging war against the soul). What does fighting that inner battle honestly look like for you right now? G3 Living Good Lives: Peter says to “live such good lives among the pagans” that even if they accuse us, they still see ourgood deeds. What is one way Christians can be misunderstood today, and how can good deeds speak louder than those misunderstandings? G4 Breaking Out of Echo Chambers: Where are you tempted to retreat into a Christian bubble or an ideological echo chamber? What would it look like to be more curious, listening, and present with those who see the world differently? G5 Submitting to Authority: Peter’s call to submit to authorities was written during Nero’s reign. How do you wrestle with submission to imperfect leaders today? What helps you foster a Christlike posture? G6 — Living Free / Living as Slaves: Peter says we are free people—but also God’s slaves. How does that paradox reshape the way we think about our rights, our conduct, and our witness? Show S1 — Where might Jesus be inviting you this week to step into the Exile Lifestyle in a practical way— fighting the internal battle, doing good among neighbours, or submitting with humility? What did you notice about the people around Jesus on the cross—the rulers, soldiers, bystanders, and criminals? GROW G1 Jesus says, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Where in the passage do you see people acting without understanding? Why do you think Jesus highlights their lack of awareness? G2 Dan highlights four groups who needed forgiveness. Which group do you personally relate to at different times in your life—the indifferent bystander, the one who sneers, the one who mocks, or the one who lashes out from a place of pain? G3 Luke shows that in this moment multiple Old Testament prophecies were being fulfilled. How does seeing Jesus’ death as part of God’s long-planned rescue mission strengthen your trust in God’s sovereignty or compassion? G4 A major theme was the contrast between what Jesus did (he forgave) and what he did not do (he did not save himself). Why is it significant that our forgiveness depended on Jesus refusing to save himself? G5 The second criminal recognized Jesus, admitted his own guilt, and simply said, “Remember me.” Why do you think this humble, two-word prayer was enough for Jesus to respond with such grace? G6 In your own life, where do you sense Jesus gently saying, “I am better”—better than the idols, distractions, or alternative “saviours” that compete for your heart? What does that invitation mean for you right now? SHOW S1 Where do you need to turn toward Jesus today—in repentance, in trust, or in surrender? What might it look like for you to say, in your own way, “Jesus, remember me,” and to receive his forgiveness and presence this week?

Would our faith, worship, and ministry carry on? Why or why not? Grow G1 In verses 5–6, the disciples are impressed by the beauty of the temple. Why do you think people can so easily be drawn to the visible, tangible parts of faith (buildings, music, programs) rather than to God Himself? G2 Jesus tells them that even the most impressive religious structures can come down. How does this challenge the ways we attach our sense of stability, identity, or faithfulness to physical things? G3 What are some modern “temples”—things that are good gifts but can subtly move from aids to worship into objects of worship? G4 In verses 7–11 Jesus speaks of upheaval, uncertainty, and things falling apart. How does trusting Jesus help us stay steady when the externals of life (or church life) feel shaky? G5 Jesus promises His presence and His words when trials come (vv.14–15). How have you seen God strengthen you or give you words when you felt unprepared or overwhelmed? G6 Verses 16–19 speak of endurance. What does faithful endurance look like today—not in dramatic persecution only, but in everyday discipleship? Show S1 Reflect honestly: What “temple” or “aid to worship” in your own life is at risk of becoming an idol—something you might cling to more tightly than Jesus Himself? What is one step you can take this week to re-centre your heart on Him?

What did you learn about who the Sadducees were and what they believed? Grow G1 — The Sadducees tried to trap Jesus with a question about marriage in the resurrection. Why do you think people sometimes try to make faith seem unreasonable or absurd? G2 — Jesus says that in the “age to come” there will be no marriage or being given in marriage. What does this teach us about how different life in the resurrection will be from life now? G3 — How does understanding that marriage on earth is a symbol pointing toward the union of Christ and the Church change the way we see marriage today? G4 — Jesus reminds us that in the resurrection we will be like the angels — not angels, but unable to die and fully alive to God. How does that reshape your picture of heaven? G5 — Think about Jesus quoting Moses at the burning bush — “I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” What does this reveal about God’s view of life, death, and resurrection? G6 — Dan said, “What you believe about heaven will change how you live life on earth.” How might a strong theology of heaven affect your perseverance, priorities, and perspective today? Show S1 — The sermon mentioned that people enduring hardship — from enslaved Africans to those World Hope serves — often draw strength from their hope of heaven. What does the story of Zacchaeus reveal about Jesus’ heart toward those society despises or overlooks? K2. Zacchaeus climbed the tree out of curiosity — what does that “tree” represent in our own spiritual journeys? Are there areas where we’re watching Jesus from a distance rather than welcoming Him in? Grow G1. The sermon described Zacchaeus as “the ruiner of dreams” before meeting Jesus. Why is it important to understand the depth of his sin before appreciating the depth of his transformation? G2. How does Jesus’ willingness to stay at Zacchaeus’ house challenge our ideas about who deserves grace or fellowship? G3. Have you ever experienced a moment when Jesus “called you down from the tree” — when curiosity turned into conviction or transformation? What changed afterward? Show S1. K2. Faith before the finish line Jesus told the men to go show themselves to the priest, and as they went, they were healed. What does this teach us about trusting Jesus before seeing results? Can you share a time when obedience came before clarity or blessing? K3. Gratitude as worship Only one man returned to give thanks. How does gratitude help us know Jesus more deeply, not just as the one who heals, but as the one who saves? GROW IN GROUPS G1. Outside the village Luke’s story happens in the “borderlands,” a place where outcasts built community. How can we, in our growgroups, make space for those who feel outside the village—those who may not “fit in” easily within church culture? G2. A community of the grateful What does a “community of gratitude” look like in practical terms? How could regular thanksgiving and shared testimonies reshape our group’s spiritual atmosphere? G3. Grow in GroupsG1 Why does Jesus warn about the seriousness of causing others to stumble or sin (verses 1-2), and how might unforgiveness be a "stumbling block" like the mulberry tree’s deep roots? G2 How do verses 3-4 illustrate the balance between rebuking others and forgiving them repeatedly? Why is this process important in uprooting unforgiveness? G3 The disciples ask Jesus to increase their faith (verse 5). What kind of faith do you think is needed to uproot the mulberry bush of unforgiveness in our hearts? G4 Jesus says that faith as small as a mustard seed can command a mulberry tree to be uprooted and planted in the sea (verse 6). How does this image encourage us about the power of even small faith in overcoming deep-seated hurt or bitterness? G5 What role does forgiveness play in the process of removing unforgiveness from our lives, especially when the offenses are repeated G6 Verses 7-10 talk about the attitude of a servant faithfully doing their duty without expecting special thanks. Jesus tells Philip, "Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father". What does this statement mean to you? How does it change your understanding of God? Grow G1 The sermon suggests that a human desire for the divine is the root cause of various societal issues, including addiction and sinful acts. How do you feel about this idea? 🤔 Do you agree that many people are, in effect, saying, "Show us the Father and that will be enough for us"? G2 Dan mentions that people who give up on their faith often do so because they don't believe God is real or that He cares about them. Based on your experiences, why do you think this might be a common reason for people to leave the church? G3 The sermon highlights the global market for spiritual services. What does this data suggest about the modern world's spiritual hunger? G4 The sermon explains that our faith is not just in a Jesus "who just SAID STUFF," but in a Jesus "WHO DID STUFF". What specific "works" of Jesus mentioned in the sermon stand out to you, and how do they demonstrate who God is? G5 The sermon refers to Colossians 1:15, which calls Jesus "the image of the invisible God." How does this verse, along with Jesus's words in John 14:10, help us understand the relationship between God the Father and God the Son?
