In this episode, i am joined by Abies and we discuss issues affecting Nigerian immigrants who live abroad. We talked about competition amongst immigrants and why Nigerian/African marriages struggle abroad compared to if they were in Africa. Abies talked about what couples should do to stay afloat and remain married. She stressed that couples have to be accountable to one another and bear each other's burden as living abroad is stressful already so they need to support each other. Couples need to ditch the African cultural outlook on marriage as it will not work in diaspora. Both people in the relationship need to pull their weight either financially, emotionally or in other ways. Abies also talked about Nigerian churches abroad and why she chose not to attend one, mostly due to their need for control and some doctrinal inconsistencies. She talked about friendships and how they change abroad, she advised not to choose friends solely based on nationality or race but based on similar personal values. She also gave her 2 cents on Nigerians who build houses in their villages in Africa, often, those properties stay dormant and unoccupied because no one lives in the villages, her advice is for people to re-think their investment strategies. We chatted about racial issues and the dance we need to do as Africans to fit into the culture abroad. From code switching to dumbing yourself down to feel accepted, she talked about her experiences and gave encouragements to immigrants including networking and being vocal in the work place. Finally she spoke against unhealthy competition in the Nigerian community and why people should stop comparing themselves to others because we are all on our unique individual journey.
