"Society gives up on you If you're still single at 40" & How to find purpose in your single season

On this episode we discussed why society gives up on single people in their 40s and how to find purpose during your waiting season. I am joined by Jayne who is a writer, publisher, author's midwife, a ministry leader and founder of SIWON (sisters in waiting outreach network) which is a ministry targeted at single women in waiting, helping them find purpose in their single season. We discussed so many topics around singleness and societal expectations. It is important for single people to find discover why they are single, are there lessons to be learned or characters to cultivate while waiting? Jayne shared with us how she has been able to reframe her mindset to find purpose and meaning in her singleness. She believes being single is not a thing of shame however, we should use it to be productive and be useful to others through our life's experiences. She dispelled a lot of myth around singleness and marriages. Marriage is not a destination and is not the greatest achievement in one's life. Also, there's no formula to finding a spouse, everything happens according to God's timeline so we must submit to his greater will & purpose for our lives. She also talked about women and submission, men needing to be leaders and not just being heads of households, women being in their masculine energy, etc. This was a very deep and interesting conversation.

This episode is for anyone who is single and waiting for the right partner who wants to learn how to steward their single season correctly. I believe this episode will inspire and educate you. "OMUGWO": Should our African grandmas be paid for helping with their grandbabies?

In this episode we talked about "Omugwo" which is an African tradition of postpartum care for nursing moms. Amaka shared her omugwo story and how the support of her mom's omugwo has helped with her quick recovery after childbirth. We talked about some myths about omugwo care (e.g. hot water compresses, pepper soup recipe, etc and its effectiveness). We also debated if it was acceptable to pay grandmas or relatives doing omugwo. While we disagreed on the method/ modality of payment, we agreed it was fair to appreciate them either financially or with gifts at some point. We also also talked about why some husbands pushback on their wives going for omugwo and abandoning them for extended length of time. This was a hearty familial episode. Life As We See It with A and A
This is why many African marriages abroad don't last anymore

We continue our discussion on why many African marriages abroad don't last anymore. One of the main reasons is due to people having wrong motives. Some women come into the marriage with the wrong motives and when they relocate abroad, it becomes easy for them to execute their malevolent plans - unfairly call the cops on their husbands and take over their properties and children in some cases. Likewise, some men are not truthful, are abusive and hold on to very patriarchal values (rigidly believe in traditional gender roles) and leave their wives to do all the domestic work at home which is tough abroad with no help.

Other factors that can negatively impact marriages abroad are social changes, financial pressure, lack of support and pressure of settling down in a new environment. Couples need to be honest, kind and need to come together and draw up a solid plan on how they will operate in the new country to avoid surprises. They should always communicate, be empathetic, understanding of each other and be each other support person. They should work together in unity as it will help set them up for success. They should be open to change/adaptable, take their Couples hould also not be shy to embrace counselling/therapy to help them navigate the stress of marriage.

This video is a must-watch for anybody or for couples planning to relocate and are interested in learning about the cultural, social or economic factors that contribute to the complexities of African (Nigerian, Ghanian, South African, etc) marriages abroad (America, UK, Canada, Australia, etc). Thank you for watching and hope you learned a thing or two. Please subscribe, comment, like and share. Why many African women are choosing to be single moms due to bad/abusive marriages

In this episode, we chat about why many African women are choosing to be single moms due to bad/abusive marriages. The rise of single motherhood in many African households is at an all time high. We talk about factors that contribute to marriages breaking apart from divorce and the women choosing to parent their children themselves. Some of the factors we identified were infidelity, abuse, lies, lack of intimacy, etc. We talked about baby mamas and why baby mamas are different from single moms, they are not the same thing. We also talked briefly about side chicks and the havoc they cause to happy marriages e.g. the case of Queen May, Yul Edochie and Judy Austin. Judy inserted herself into a once happy marriage and broke it, now she is paying for her actions as Yul has abandoned her and her children making her single mom. Side chicks need to stay away from married men. Also we talked about why abusive men must seek therapy and counseling to heal and become better husbands to their wives & families. As a single mom of 6 kids, Afy shared from first hand experience and several anecdotes of the struggles single moms face and why it is better to be a single mom than to suffered in a terrible abusive marriage.

On this episode, I talked about 14 lessons I learned living in America as a Nigerian immigrant. I share 14 key lessons i have learned living in the US as a foreigner/immigrant. The lessons i share are highly subjective nd is solely based on my own opinion and i acknowledge that my experience could differ from that of other immigrants. Young African immigrants experience America for the first time (perception vs harsh reality)

I'm joined by my two lovely nieces on this episode to discuss how they are navigating life in America as young Nigerian immigrants (their perception vs reality). It was refreshing to hear them share their experiences as teenage girls trying to find their place in the society, They drew parallels/made comparisons between living in Nigeria and living in America. They talked about how schooling in America is different from Nigeria, the students are not very friendly because they see you as a foreigner, but the teachers are very nice and are great at teaching. They talked about how Americans don't value the "respect of elders or older people" like Nigerians do so people are not very happy when you address them as "ma or sir" here. They like a lot of things about America except for the food, they don't like most American dishes. In general, they talked about adjusting to life in America and navigating culture shocks they have experienced both in school and in the work place. They joked that Americans are weird because they do things differently than we do in Nigeria. They believe their solid upbringing and faith will keep them grounded in America as they continue to grow and expand their network.

This episode is for everyone, young, old, new immigrants, parents of immigrants, etc that want to learn about the experiences of young teenage kids, their challenges and struggles in adapting to a new country. Exposing false teachings in the church: They keep people in bondage

In this episode, Abies exposes various false teachings in the church keeping people in bondage. Her drawn out struggle with post partum anxiety & long recovery led her on a journey of deconstructing her faith to find out what was true and un-true about the Christian Faith. She talked about different doctrines some modern churches have adopted leading people astray. Most of those false teachings stem from "new thought" ideology which has some similarity to prosperity gospel. The type of Christianity that constricts Faith to material things like prosperity, wealth and riches is very shallow and doesn't reflect the depth of God's dealings with his children. We talked about different bible characters who despite experiencing severe challenges, were commended by God as being true servants. She realized during her struggles with anxiety, that God hadn't forsaken or abandoned her but through her struggles, he was doing a greater work in her to make her what he wanted her to be. Abies encourages Christians to study the bible for themselves and be very discerning of what is truth or "truth adjacent" so as not to be deceived. She advices Christians to be open and vulnerable about their struggles rather than live in pretense out of fear of judgement by fellow believers. The gospel is simple: Jesus Christ dying to redeem humanity back to God. The wrong and false teachings peddled by some pastors and ministers of the gospel need to stop because they keep people in bondage and makes them blind to the true love of God.

This episode is very revelatory and is for every person of Faith, Christians or those seeking to know more about God and his word. It is important to know that regardless of what you're going through, God loves you. As a believer, the presence of challenges in your life isn't proof that God is punishing or hates you, infact it's proof that he loves you and is doing a good and quick work within you. You must know why you believe what you believe and learn to her the holy spirit for yourself to stay clear of wrong teachings in the church.

PS: Even though Mike Winger was referenced in this episode as a good resource for Christian deconstruction, Abies no longer recommends him due to his political stance on some recent issues.

My postpartum journey - depression, anxiety, intrusive thoughts & my miraculous recovery after 2 years

In this episode, my friend Abies Adeyeri returns to share her postpartum journey and experience with us. Abies takes us through her pregnancy journey, being diagnosed with fibroids during her first pregnancy and the pain and difficulties she experienced, doctors/hospital visits and how she successfully delivered her beautiful baby girl. With her husband being far away in another country, it was a tough experience for her to go with little or no support. Her 2nd pregnancy went on smoothly and 3rd pregnancy mostly went smoothly until just before her due date when she started experiencing some unusual symptoms, went in to the doctors. and was diagnosed with preeclampsia and had to deliver her baby earlier than the due date. Her postpartum journey after that pregnancy was a long and arduous one.

After her discharge from the hospital with 3 young kids and a husband who worked full time, the responsibility of the home fell heavily on her. She went days without much sleep because her newborn needed to be attended to. She said it really messed with her sleep pattern and circadian rhythm, she was basically running on no sleep and over time, began to affect her blood pressure and mental health struggles (depression, anxiety and intrusive thoughts) which were really bad. This season lasted for over 2 years during which she had to go back to work. She said the lack of support played a huge role in her postpartum depression and all that came with it. During this time, she relied strongly on God and her Faith. With the help of God's Word, prayers and therapy, she was able to fight through the dark clouds and fully heal/recover now, an advocate for working moms and the importance of community and support. She said that having community and support is very important for new moms to be able to manage their mental health especially after a difficult pregnancy or birthing. Through this difficult postpartum journey, she grew in her faith, deconstructed her Faith and found God for herself in a deeper and meaningful way and teaches on the importance of sound biblical teachings.

She hopes sharing her story will inspire other moms and women who are in similar situations or have struggled with anxiety, depression or had mom struggles. Abies's story is one of courage, Faith, strength and resilience. I hope you enjoyed this episode. I Moved to America BROKE as an International Student (testimony & life lessons)

In this episode, i share my experience of moving to America as international student from Nigeria with little to no money. I left a lucrative career in banking and moved to America in 2011 for my Masters (graduate school) in America. However, I wasn't financially prepared for the journey and had no money saved up before coming the the US. With only 40% scholarship, my school fees was in the thousands of dollars and i had only come with a fraction of that. I struggled a lot and did all sorts of off jobs to survive, my mental health and academics suffered because of that. Despite all the struggles, i was able to persevere through the help and grace of God. I eventually got funding/fellowship after a while which helped me through my program. Even though it's been 14 years since this experience, I still beat myself up for coming to America financially unprepared. That experience shaped my life and i learnt great lessons of how to be financially wise and save up for your dreams.

If you're an international student considering making the move to America or just curious about what it's like to start from scratch in a new country, then this video is for you. Join me as I share my incredible journey as a broke international student in America and discover the challenges I faced and the lessons I learned. From navigating a new culture to finding ways to make ends meet, I'll take you through the highs and lows of my time in the United States. Why married women should have a life outside of their marriage & husbands

I am joined by my sister Afy to discuss why women should have a life outside of their marriage or their husbands. A lot of African women get into marriage with the expectation of being housewives and have their husbands provide for their families. However, in today's world and current economy, both people (husbands & wives) need to pull their weight financially to make things work. Afy advices women to be resourceful, get jobs or do petty trading and be financially independent of their husbands. She believes women should be able to contribute meaningfully to the family. She shares her own personal story of how she worked hard as a young mom of 5 kids to be able to support her family despite having a husband. She advices women not to solely rely on their husbands income to support them but they should find a job or start a business (no matter how small). Doing so, will not only give them independence but give them an identity, provide mental & emotional wellness and earn them some respect from their husbands an in-laws. She advises women to take care of themselves and look good and attractive for their husbands. Wives should be their husbands back bones, cook for them and take care of them and on the other hand, husbands should love and be appreciative of their wives efforts. Having raised 5 kids ranging from 15 to 27 year old, she shares her struggles raising the kids almost single handedly sometimes traveling with them on business trips to broker deals. She looks back now and is grateful that her kids are grown and doing well.

This episode is for women everywhere, it is packed with great words of advice and testimony of how one woman overcame many obstacles to achieve her dream of seeing her children become successful through her sacrifice as a wife and mom. Unhealthy competition amongst immigrants & why some marriages struggle & fail abroad

In this episode, i am joined by Abies and we discuss issues affecting Nigerian immigrants who live abroad. We talked about competition amongst immigrants and why Nigerian/African marriages struggle abroad compared to if they were in Africa. Abies talked about what couples should do to stay afloat and remain married. She stressed that couples have to be accountable to one another and bear each other's burden as living abroad is stressful already so they need to support each other. Couples need to ditch the African cultural outlook on marriage as it will not work in diaspora. Both people in the relationship need to pull their weight either financially, emotionally or in other ways. Abies also talked about Nigerian churches abroad and why she chose not to attend one, mostly due to their need for control and some doctrinal inconsistencies. She talked about friendships and how they change abroad, she advised not to choose friends solely based on nationality or race but based on similar personal values. She also gave her 2 cents on Nigerians who build houses in their villages in Africa, often, those properties stay dormant and unoccupied because no one lives in the villages, her advice is for people to re-think their investment strategies. We chatted about racial issues and the dance we need to do as Africans to fit into the culture abroad. From code switching to dumbing yourself down to feel accepted, she talked about her experiences and gave encouragements to immigrants including networking and being vocal in the work place. Finally she spoke against unhealthy competition in the Nigerian community and why people should stop comparing themselves to others because we are all on our unique individual journey.
