This episode is part of the series From Survivor to Leader, where the Louder Than Silence staff have discussions about all things LTS and what it means to be leading the work in long-term care for survivors of sexual violence. It’s a mix of our own personal experiences, the work our team does, and how those two things impact each other. Our hope is that survivors feel seen and validated and supporters gain a deeper understanding of what this healing process looks like. This episode is When Your Support System Doesn’t Actually Support You, where we take a look at the impact of people responding poorly to a survivor’s story and how we navigate that process. This is the 4th episode in our Meet the Team series. Over the next few months, I am going to be interviewing members of the staff, board, and key volunteers to get a feel for who’s doing this work and what they bring to the organization. I’m excited to introduce these amazing people and the impact they’ve had on the work we do at LTS.
This month, we are talking with Amy Silva, our board secretary.

We are in the middle of our Survivors Have Paid Enough series, and today, we are taking a little side quest in this journey. Typically, we’ve been exploring eight areas of health and dive into how survivors of sexual violence have all areas of their lives impacted by the trauma they’ve experienced. We also learn about ways to improve these areas of health and see the life transformations we want.
We started this series by exploring how mental health is affected by sexual violence and taking a deep dive into PTSD. We then began unpacking emotional health and what it looks like to field big emotions and practice good emotional hygiene. The last few episodes, we started the talked in depth about relationship health, how to identify safe relationships, and a whole lot about boundaries.
This is episode 11 of the series, and it felt appropriate for me to take some time to give a little more insight into the reality of what this process is like. Though I try to demystify the healing process and what this work looks like, it’s something to hear about a topic and yet another to hear a person’s story of what we’re really doing here and why this matters. For today, I am going to dive into the seven biggest lessons I’ve learned from healing from sexual violence.
