Macabre London
Christmas is cancelled - sorry

Not what I wanted to be putting out by RIP to my dear cat Boots who died yesterday - 13/12/25. She was an excellent cat, friend and daughter to me, I loved her so much and she was my family. I know many of you will know how much this hurts so thank you for understanding, this was not what I wanted to be doing at all, everything was very sudden and not expected but she was an old lady at 14 and she had a wonderful life. My brain is not in the game to be editing and putting things out so I'll see you all in 2026. Not a beg at all but just being very honest that if I don't put content out, I don't get paid so if you've ever considered patreon or want to use my KOFI or PayPal, that would be very useful and also help with the vet bills but as always, please don't be offended or upset if you don't want to or can't afford to, it's 100% fine and the pre and post roll ads on this ep are automatic. Just giving the option for those who can and would like to. You can also download old episodes and listen as that helps as well.

Thanks so much for understanding, being kind and knowing that grief is a tricky beast.See you in 2026.

Macabre London
The Unsolved Christmas Murder of Rose Mylett | Crimes of Christmas Past 1

In December 1888, when London’s East End was still haunted by the fear of Jack the Ripper, another woman was found strangled in the street: Rose Mylett. And just like that, the terror returned.

This episode takes you deep into the investigation that never reached a conclusion — a tragic death brushed aside by authorities desperate for normality at Christmas. Who killed Rose? And why did the case fade into the fog of history?

We’ll also step through the East End’s bleak holiday reality — overcrowded slums, freezing workhouses, and empty tables — and how Charles Dickens played an unlikely part in transforming Christmas into a moment of hope.

Perfect for fans of unsolved mysteries, historical true crime, and eerie Victorian storytelling.

Macabre London
The Murders That Forced Forensics to Evolve: Inside London’s Darkest Cases

Forensic science is now one of the most powerful tools in crime investigation — but its journey began in the shadows of London’s darkest cases.

In this episode of Macabre London, we trace the evolution of forensics through the crimes that pushed science to its limits.

We begin with the first-ever conviction using a fingerprint, a moment that changed policing forever. From there, we step into the disturbing case of Patrick Mahon, whose brutality forced investigators to invent new forensic techniques simply to piece his crime together.

We move forward into the mid-20th century to examine how the chilling actions of serial killers Reg Christie and Dennis Nilsen broadened the scope of forensic investigation — from body recovery to behavioural patterns and beyond.

Then, we look at how modern forensic advancements reopened previously unsolved cases, most notably the landmark case of Stephen Lawrence, where new technology finally gave investigators the tools needed to secure long-awaited justice.

Finally, we explore how forensics operates when the crime scene spans an entire city — through the extraordinary investigative efforts following the 7/7 London bombings, where thousands of pieces of evidence had to be located, logged, analysed, and understood.

If you love dark history, true crime, and the hidden mechanics of how cases are solved, this episode uncovers the science, the stories, and the London crimes that changed everything.

Macabre London
Women of the Watch: How London’s First Female Police Officers Fought Their Way Into the Force

In this next chapter of our Crime & Punishment in the Capital City series, we explore a story often overlooked in the darker corners of London’s past: the long and brutal fight for women to earn their place in the Metropolitan Police.

From early moral guardians to undercover operatives, and eventually, fully empowered officers, the women who patrolled London’s streets faced resistance at every turn. Their uniforms were criticised, their authority questioned, and more than once their very existence within the force was nearly erased. But they fought back—quietly, strategically, and with unwavering resolve.

In this episode, we uncover the scandals, political battles, and public panics that shaped the rise of female policing up to the present day. We’ll meet the pioneers who walked these fog-shrouded streets long before society believed they should, and discover how their work changed crime-fighting in the capital forever.

Perfect for fans of dark history, untold stories, social history, women’s rights history, London lore, and true crime documentaries.

Macabre London
The Haunted History of the Grenadier Pub – London’s Ghost Soldier

Hidden down a quiet Belgravia mews, The Grenadier looks like any charming old London pub — but inside, something sinister still stirs. Said to be haunted by the ghost of a young soldier beaten to death over a game of cards, this centuries-old tavern holds stories soaked in sorrow, superstition, and spirits of all kinds.

Join me as we slip through the misty backstreets of 19th-century London to uncover the legend of the Grenadier’s ghost — a tale where loyalty, betrayal, and a lost debt still echo through the rafters. From flickering lights to phantom footsteps, is this one of London’s most active hauntings… or just a story that’s grown taller with every pint?

Macabre London
The Ghosts of The Ten Bells Pub

Nestled in the heart of Spitalfields, The Ten Bells is one of London’s most infamous pubs — and not just for its beer. Said to be haunted by the restless spirits of the past, this centuries-old public house has seen everything from Ripper victims to spectral barmaids who never clocked out. But how much of the haunting is real, and how much is legend born from the dark streets of Whitechapel?

In this episode of Macabre London, we uncover the eerie history behind The Ten Bells — from its chilling connection to Jack the Ripper and the brutal murders of Annie Chapman and Mary Jane Kelly, to the countless ghost sightings that still send shivers down visitors’ spines today. Step inside, if you dare, as we peel back the layers of London’s haunted past and ask: is The Ten Bells really one of the most haunted pubs in the city, or just cursed by its own bloody history?

FROM THE VAULT: The Flannan Isles Lighthouse Mystery. What really happened?

FROM THE VAULT: this week we have a corker of an episode from years gone by, we're diving back into the vault of Macabre Mini Mysteries to find you a yesteryear gem for your delectation. We'll be back as usual ASAP with a brand new episode but until then, enjoy this vintage listen...

A top a windswept rocky outcrop stands a lonely lighthouse. Its job for many years has been to forewarn sailors that their boats are at risk of striking one of the many jagged rocks that are hidden deep below the surface which could cause a devastating shipwreck.

The lamp which was tended to by three hardy keepers on rotation from the mainland of Scotland, one day went dark and when the watch came to replace the men from the isolated island they were nowhere to be found and the lighthouse itself was deserted sparking one of the greatest mysteries of all time.

Today on Macabre Mini Mysteries, we uncover the story of the abandoned Flannan Lighthouse and the fate of its three missing keepers.

Macabre London
Annie Chapman & The Double Event: Jack the Ripper’s Next Victims

In September 1888, Jack the Ripper escalated his crimes. Annie Chapman was found murdered in Hanbury Street, followed just weeks later by the Double Event — the back-to-back killings of Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes in a single night.

In this episode of Macabre London, we follow the police investigations into these gruesome murders, uncovering the challenges they faced, the evidence they uncovered, and the infamous Goulston Street Graffito that baffled investigators. Could the Ripper have been identified sooner, or was Victorian policing simply outmatched by his brutality?

The First Jack the Ripper Murder: How Police Investigated Mary Ann Nichols’ Death

On 31st August 1888, Mary Ann Nichols was found brutally murdered in Whitechapel — and with her death, the shadow of Jack the Ripper began to fall across London.

In this episode of Macabre London, we take you inside the police investigation into the first confirmed Ripper murder. How did officers approach the scene? What evidence did they have to work with in Victorian London? And could they have stopped the Ripper before his killing spree claimed more lives?

Using contemporary police reports, witness statements, and historical accounts, we’ll explore the exact steps the Metropolitan Police took — and the mistakes that might have changed history.

Before Jack: Police Investigate Whitechapel’s First Two Murders

Before Jack: Police Investigate Whitechapel’s First Two Murders

Join Macabre London for a chilling prelude to the infamous Jack the Ripper saga. In this episode, we uncover the first two Whitechapel murders—Emma Elizabeth Smith and Martha Tabram—long before the canonical five claimed global attention. Discover how H Division detectives responded to these brutal cases, the investigative methods of 1888, and why these early murders were initially overlooked in the Ripper narrative.

🔎 Key Topics Covered:

  • The murders of Emma Smith (April 1888) and Martha Tabram (August 1888)—linked in CID records but not officially part of the canonical five
  • How Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, and others later aligned with distinctive Ripper-style mutilation
  • Victorian policing tactics, forensic limitations, and the rise of sensational press coverage

Expect gripping narrative, rich historical context, and suspense that builds toward the infamous “Double Event”—the murders of Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes on 30 September 1888

If you’re obsessed with true crime, Victorian history, or the roots of Jack the Ripper, this deep dive is your perfect start. Subscribe for more ghostly histories from London's darker side.

Macabre London
London’s First Policemen Were Drunk, Violent… and Hated | Crime & Punishment in the Capital City

Before the crisp uniforms and community smiles, London’s very first police officers were anything but respectable. In this episode of Macabre London, we uncover the outrageous early days of the Met — when public trust was low, tempers were high, and a night on the beat often ended in a fight outside the pub.

From riotous mobs to internal corruption, discover how Britain’s most iconic police force was built by brawlers, not by-the-book officers.

We look into the horrifying bloody code years, the 200 offences you could be hanged for and the tireless work of Elizabeth Fry and Robert Peel to reform not only prisons but also to try and establish a police force.

Macabre London
Crushed by The Rocket: The Death and Haunting of William Huskisson

In 1828, a grand celebration marked the trial of Britain’s first passenger railway—but by the end of the day, one of the country’s most powerful men was dead. William Huskisson, MP, was struck by The Rocket in a gruesome accident that unfolded in front of the Duke of Wellington and dozens of shocked onlookers.

As the wheels of progress crushed Huskisson’s leg and his legacy, rumours of hauntings began to follow the railway line. Was his death just an unfortunate error—or something more sinister?

Join me for a Macabre Mini Mystery exploring the moment technology turned deadly—and the ghost story it left behind.

🚂 Death on the tracks, ghosts in the tunnels, and the day progress demanded a price.

Macabre London
London's First Police Force Was a Gang?! | The Dark History of the Bow Street Runners

Before Scotland Yard... before the Met Police... there was chaos.

In this episode of Macabre London, we uncover the wild, booze-soaked origins of Britain's very first police force – the Bow Street Runners. But these weren’t your average crimefighters. Oh no. These were drunken, brawling, and occasionally criminal men who blurred the lines between justice and disorder.

Led by an eccentric magistrate and paid with public funds (and sometimes beer), this ragtag group laid the foundations for modern policing... but not without raising a few eyebrows and knocking out a few teeth along the way.

🔪 Were they heroes? Hooligans? Or something much more complicated?

🕵️‍♀️ Join me as we delve into the weird and bloody history of the 1700s crime-fighting gang who were meant to protect the streets — but often caused just as much trouble.

Macabre London
The Chevalier d'Éon: History’s First Trans Spy and Master of Disguise

In this episode of Macabre London, we uncover the astonishing true story of the Chevalier d'Éon — a master spy, decorated soldier, and diplomat in 18th century France who became one of the first openly transgender or gender-nonconforming public figures in recorded history.

D'Éon led a double life in the shadowy world of Louis XV’s secret intelligence network, using diplomacy, disguise, and blackmail to survive the cutthroat politics of the French royal court. After years of military service and espionage, d’Éon stunned the world by publicly presenting as a woman — sparking international intrigue and political scandal.

But was this a revolutionary act of gender expression, or a carefully calculated move to protect royal secrets?

Join me as I explore D’Éon’s incredible life — from fencing duels and spy missions across Europe, to a post-mortem discovery that left Victorian London reeling. With themes of identity, survival, and political manipulation, this episode delves deep into one of history’s most fascinating and misunderstood figures.

Macabre London
Why You Could Legally Kill Criminals in Old London! Crime & Punishment in London

Before London had the Met, it had chaos.

In this episode of Macabre London, we uncover the strange and often deadly story of how policing began in the city—from the drunken "Charlies" who fell asleep on the job, to the terrifyingly informal Hue and Cry system that let ordinary citizens legally execute criminals on sight. And let's not forget Jonathan Wild: the man who invented organised crime while pretending to be its biggest enemy.

Join me as we dig into the murky underworld of Georgian crime, shady law enforcement, the wilderness years of the gin craze and how all of this laid the foundation for modern policing... even if that foundation was built on fear, corruption, and a lot of laudanum.
