Having completed His earthly ministry and yielding to the will of God, Jesus willingly offered Himself as the atoning sacrifice that would pay the penalty of sin once and for all. As His disciples battled between what they saw and what they had been told, Mary Magdalene and others went to His burial site to find an angel of the Lord, shining, and sitting over the entrance of the open tomb informing her, “He is risen!” With that reality, Jesus’ followers were told to get the word out and make more disciples. The term King and Kingdom is a consistent message and theme throughout Matthew. Jesus was called King at His birth and His death. Everything in our text has been pointing to this moment. In our text, we can learn from Simon, the crowd, creation, and the criminals about how we respond to the King on the cross. The ironies of the cross also teach us the way of the Kingdom. The three parables in Matthew 25 are meant to be understood together. The parable of the 10 virgins is challenging us to assess whether or not we are leveraging our TIME for God‘s kingdom. The parable of the talents is challenging us and asking us are we leveraging our RESOURCES for God‘s kingdom? Based on how we answer whether or not we are leveraging our time and resources will ultimately be seen on judgment day. One day Jesus is going to separate the sheep from the goats. Those on the right are going be the ones that leverage their resources and time for the kingdom. Those on the left are going to be those that let excuses and priorities reign supreme. As we read this text, think about how we are all leveraging our time and resources for God‘s kingdom. Jesus was often confronted by religious elites seeking conflict, not dialogue. Recognizing their hostile intent, He chose to offer His followers relevant teaching rather than debate. After hearing Jesus’ command to go to your brother or sister after they sin against you, Peter follows up with a question that seems natural to ask, “how many times should I forgive when my brother sins against me?”Although his question may be well-intentioned, Jesus wants Peter and us to make sure that we see the big picture. Our ability and willingness to forgive is directly connected to our own gratitude level. Until we understand our own debt, we will never fully be able to forgive other people of theirs. Jesus follows up the Parable of the Sower with a truth bomb for every listener: The Kingdom of Heaven is worth all sacrifice! Not only does Jesus share the truth of this reality, but he immediately models it with some unique challenges from two very different circumstances. The Kingdom is rejected by those who have fallen in love with tradition, but accepted by a pagan who is searching for that treasure worthy of giving up everything. How can different people hear the same thing but respond in dramatically different ways? Jesus answers that question in Matthew 13 in the parable of the sower. Jesus was not just telling people about his authority and power, in Matthew chapter 8 he SHOWS US his power and authority. In our text today, we have six different scenes, but we have one supreme King. Like these men and women in our text, we’ve seen when we try to fix our own problems or rely on our own strength, it just makes us tired and frustrated. What all six of these people have in common is a need. Some leave their need at a place of intention, while others take a step of faith. What will you do with your need? As Jesus brings His sermon to a close in the chapter 7 of Matthew, we see the conclusion of His description of what this new kingdom will look like. Having prepared their hearts to develop different attitudes that mirror His character, Jesus invites His followers to employ those qualities in their choices, in their actions, and in their hearts. He challenges them to obey without seeking the endorsement of their fellow man, but rather to trust that their pure motives are seen by an all-knowing God.  In this text, Jesus addresses the anxiety we feel when we care too deeply for what others think.  Seek Him first and His righteousness and all the things we need will be provided. Jesus is preaching to a group of people that likely never considered themselves to be blessed. In Matthew chapter 5, Jesus continues to show us a picture of His “upside down kingdom.” This crowd who had been mourning, marginalized, and without a physical inheritance is now hearing that the kingdom of heaven is theirs and that they can see God. This blessing not only brings them a new perspective, but it also helps them to know that they will be able to live out the rest of the sermon on the mount. In first-century Judea, Rome became the occupying force and Herod was just a client king of the Emperor.  Caesar was king.  He was revered, had his way, and no one dared trample on his authority.  With that backdrop of experience, with all the aggravations that brought, the Jews longed for their promised Messiah - a King who would rule over all kings forever.   It seemed odd that a crazy man in crazy clothes would be the herald of such a promised King and yet John the baptizer's words, "Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand" was audacious and in the face of those in power.  Could this man, Jesus of Nazareth be THAT King? As we’ve talked about the past few weeks, the Holy Spirit transforms us as individuals as we continue to live in rhythm and walk in step with Him. As we have seen in the narrative of Ruth, God is working behind the scenes in the life of Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz. While God is no doubt working in the background of their life, what helped turn their heartbreak into hope, was their faithful responses in the middle heartbreak. The decisions that Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz made left a legacy that everyone of us in this room today are getting to experience. God can do the same thing in your story too. The faith filled decisions that you and I make today will outlive us and bless future generations we will never see.
