Oeganda, ook wel de Parel van Afrika genoemd met haar prachtige berggebieden, eindeloze savannes en tropische bossen vol rijkdom aan diersoorten van klein tot groot. Bij de meeste van ons natuurlijk bekend vanwege de berggorilla’s en de chimpansees.
Een ontmoeting met onze voorouders is een onvergetelijke ervaring voor het leven die je eigenlijk niet zou mogen missen.
Oeganda is een buitengewone reisbestemming met een perfecte mix van natuurlijke schoonheid en rijke culturele ontmoetingen. De hoogtepunten van dit land zijn zo talrijk dat het moeilijk kiezen is.
In deze aflevering vertel ik over het 'oude en het nieuwe' Oeganda. Een begrip dat ik 25 jaar geleden voor het eerst gebruikte voor het land Kenia van toen en nu. Met beroemde plekken waar het druk kan zijn tov Afrika geheel voor jezelf hebben.
Tijdens mijn reis met Wild Places Africa maakte ik wederom kennis met ditzelfde principe. Een Oeganda waar je dagen kunt rondrijden in wildreservaten zonder ook maar een ander voertuig tegen te komen.

Hoe mooi is het wanneer je getuige bent van een ontmoeting in de bush met jouw lievelingsdieren zonder ook maar een ander voertuig of andere toerist bij deze wildlife scene.
Dit is het beroemde fenomeen van Afrika voor jezelf hebben.
Ik had deze ervaring eens met top safarigids Dave Carson op weg naar zijn safarikamp in het Hwange National Park. Luister maar naar de bijzondere uren die ik met hem en zijn vrouw meemaakte. De leeuwen en olifanten waren de hoofdrolspelers.
Heb je naast de beroemde big Five ook wel eens gehoord van de small five en de ugly five? Ik stel ze je aan je voor.
Tot slot vertel ik over een van de meest bijzondere Afrikaanse ceremoniën die ik ooit bij toeval mocht bijwonen in het westen van Zambia, de Kuamboka ceremonie en heb ik nog een bijzonder wildlife weetje die ik graag met je deel.

I am talking with Alex Walters, one of the great ambassadors for this very exclusive and safari-chic portfolio. Operating 14 safari camps in the vast open spaces of Botswana, Kenya and Zimbabwe.
Alex started his career as a young man working for the Royal Geographical Society and as many other people got inspired by Sir David Attenborough before he was asked to come and work for Great Plains in 2010.
Great Plains is founded in 2006 by a group of conservationists and headed by legendary filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert, The company works hard to find the right balance between conservation, communities and commerce.
Their mission is to expend natural habitat and creating wildlife corridors between national Parks. This by operarating commercial safari camps in partnership with local communities.

In deze aflevering reizen we af van Breukelen naar de ruige bush van het Hwange NP in Zimbabwe.
Zo zitten Hans en Martina in April nog in het zeer natte Nederland en zo staan zij tijdens hun eerste safaritocht bij een groep leeuwen met hun 'kill in het warme Hwange NP. Ik kan me een slechter begin voorstellen.
De dagen die hier op volgen zijn al niet veel minder. Jagende Cheetah broers op wildebeesten, leeuwen op jacht naar hun dagelijkse maaltijd, olifanten in overvloed en natuurlijk een bezoek aan het bijzondere neushoorn project wat door de lokale Ngamo community wordt gerund in samenwerking met Imvelo Lodges & Camps.
Reizen in het groene seizoen kent vele voordelen zoals een fors lagere prijs. Maar het kent ook risico's zoals een geheel ondergelopen deel van het park door hevige regenval. Hierdoor dienen reizigers soms flexibel te zijn wanneer een reisschema noodgedwongen moet worden aangepast.
Luister naar de verhalen en ervaringen van mijn dorpsgenoten Hans en Martina Bierhuis die het wel zagen zitten om eens te gaan reizen tijdens het Afrikaanse groene seizoen. Ik geloof dat de prachtige natuur van Hwange hen niet heeft teleurgesteld.

Tijmen is werkzaam als sound engineer in de muziekwereld en besluit na een korte kennismaking met Zuid-Afrika het nu ietsje groter aan te pakken. Want hoe leuk zou het zijn om samen met je partner die nog nooit in Afrika is geweest de Central Kalahari en Moremi door te trekken? En ja dat in de maand Februari bekendstaand als de regenperiode in dit deel van Afrika.
Voorzichtig leg ik tijdens een inspiratiesessie met Tijmen uit dat dit niet een vanzelfsprekend reisplan betreft. Al snel merk ik dat ik hier te maken heb met een van de meest nuchtere en relaxte avonturiers die niet van wijken weten!
Luister naar de mooie ervaringen die zij meemaken en hoe vaak zij soms uren vast kwamen te zitten in de onvoorspelbare ruige natuur van Botswana.
