その人はあなたか私どちらか一方だけが知っている人のことを話す時に使う。

You probably learned “thatあの人” and “that oneその人” at the beginner level, but it's not about distance—it's about shared understanding.
“That person:あの人” is used when talking about someone both you and I know.
“That one:その人” is used when talking about someone only you or I know.
