Monaco Weekly News by NEWS.MC - ep 62

This week on NEWS.MC TV, we’re diving into a packed run of developments shaping the Principality — from financial integrity and climate leadership to caviar, cardiology and a couple of bruising nights for the Roca Team.

We begin with a major step forward in Monaco’s fight against financial crime. On November 6, the International University of Monaco joined forces with the Monégasque Association of Compliance Officers to launch a brand-new professional certification designed to bolster the Principality’s defences against money laundering, terrorism financing, weapons proliferation and corruption.

Environmental diplomacy then took centre stage thousands of kilometres away in Belém, Brazil. Addressing the COP30 plenary on the same day, Prince Albert II issued a forceful pledge: Monaco will double its international climate funding to developing nations by 2028.

Closer to home, Monaco played its part in Operation Romogepol, a large-scale oil spill response exercise off Saint-Tropez on November 6. Maritime teams from Monaco, France and Italy joined forces in a realistic simulation of a major tanker incident, testing everything from crisis coordination to environmental protection protocols.

The sporting season kicked off on the water as well, with the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series returning from November 6 to 9. Now in its twelfth edition, the regatta once again drew elite J/70 crews looking to sharpen their skills in winter conditions at the Yacht Club de Monaco.

On November 7 in São Paulo, Prince Albert II met ten young eco-entrepreneurs at an innovation forum hosted by his foundation under the theme Building Tomorrow Together. The discussions revolved around sustainability, creativity and, frankly, the sort of optimism the world could use more of.

Medical specialists also convened on November 7 for the 36th International Day at the Hôtel Hermitage, organised by the Monaco Cardio-Thoracic Centre. This year’s focus: heart failure — a condition as common as it is complex. Experts from Monaco, Paris, Marseille and elsewhere traded insights on diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

On November 8, while in São Paulo for the Brazilian Grand Prix, Prince Albert II visited the Ayrton Senna Institute to honour the legacy of the six-time Monaco Grand Prix winner. Even three decades on, Senna’s ties to the Principality remain unmatched.

Back in Monaco, fresh economic figures revealed that the Principality’s 2024 GDP has shattered the €10 billion barrier — reaching €10.28 billion, an 8.8% inflation-adjusted rise from 2023. Not bad for 2 km².

The Principality marked Armistice Day on November 11 with a solemn tribute beginning at the monument to King Albert I of Belgium, followed by prayers and a wreath-laying ceremony at the Monaco Cemetery’s war memorial.

Economic diplomacy continued that same day as a Slovak delegation met the Monaco Economic Board to explore cooperation in sectors ranging from tech and logistics to architecture and printing. The gathering at the Novotel included a business conference and targeted B2B sessions.

On the basketball court, it was a tale of two tough nights for the Roca Team. First came a 78–76 defeat to Partizan Belgrade — despite Monaco unleashing an unbelievable 22–0 run in the fourth quarter. Then, on November 13, Red Star Belgrade topped Monaco 91–79, pulling away late with a relentless offensive burst. A frustrating double-header, though certainly not the end of the story.

And finally, this week’s guest: John Velissarios, consultant and strategic adviser. He joins us for an in-depth conversation on risk, regulation, digital trust and the evolving challenges facing organisations in an increasingly complex global landscape.
