Money Boundaries: I Can't Afford to go Out. How do I Politely Tell my Friend?

#11: Listen. Sometimes we just can't afford that thing that our friend/family wants us to do. And other times - we just don't want to spend our hard earned money there.

How do we communicate our needs lovingly? And without pissing our loved ones off?

Justine De Peralta, Certified Financial Education Instructor, Domestic Violence Counselor, and Author of ‘Girl, Jump: Building a Financial Safety Net to Leave an Abusive Relationship and Reclaim Your Freedom’ walks me through the 4 steps of non-violent communication.

  1. Share an observation
  2. Share your feeling
  3. Share your needs
  4. Tie it together with a request: e.g. 'Would you be willing to have dinner at a non fine-dining restaurant'?

My friend, Justine De Peralta, is coming to San Antonio at the end of the month, and I only have $80 to spend during her time here. I practice using these 4 steps with this real life example on this episode! It was NOT easy.

Was Justine REALLY okay with this budget? How did I approach the conversation? And does it mean I'm cheap?

Tune in for this and so much more!
