Warner Bros Bidding War, Supergirl Teaser Teaser, Avengers: Endgame Back In Theaters, Scarlett Johansson Eyed for The Batman II

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes

The potential sale of Warner Bros Discovery has been a hot topic in recent weeks, but no one could have predicted the escalation and heightened stakes the bidding war has reached as Paramount CEO David Ellison announced a hostile takeover bid to the tune of $108.4 billion in response to what he described as Netflix’s inferior $82.7 billion deal; a deal that seemed like an all but assured thing just days ago.

It’s been an uncharacteristically long time since James Gunn has given us a headline, but we may still be a day late and dollar short, as on Sunday the DC Studios head released a 10 second first look at Supergirl via social media, with the promise of the teaser trailer later in the week; which many have speculated to mean Thursday… Thanks, James! Also concerning DC: Four years after leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe behind, Scarlett Johansson seems headed for Gotham City, with the actress in final negotiations to join The Batman Part II. Details about Johansson's potential role are being closely guarded, though speculation has already run rampant about which iconic Batman character she might portray, though being a new love interest for Bruce Wayne in some capacity is a popular guess in the wake of unconfirmed reports that Zoe Kravitz might not reprise her role in the sequel.

More than seven years after its original theatrical run, Marvel Studios is bringing Avengers: Endgame, the second-highest-grossing film of all time, back to theaters September 25, 2026 just months before Avengers: Doomsday later that December. While it's still unknown how long the Russos Brothers’ last MCU contribution will be back to the big screen, the placement between the releases of Spider-Man: Brand New Day in July and Doomsday in December, has fueled industry insider speculation suggesting the new Avengers film will act as a direct sequel to Endgame rather than closely following the events of Phases 4 through 6.

HBO has revealed that the third season of Euphoria will begin streaming in April of 2026. This comes more than four years after Season 2 finished in February 2022.

Hulu has renewed the Glen Powell led sports comedy series Chad Powers for a second season.

20th Century Studios announced The Simpsons Movie 2 has been delayed from July 23, 2027 to September 3, 2027.

Paramount and Blumhouse are reviving the Paranormal Activity franchise and bringing on James Wan to produce a new feature film in the franchise according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Variety and CNN have revealed the star-studded lineup for the 23rd season of Actors on Actors. Some of the participants include Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Dwayne Johnson, Julia Roberts, and Ariana Grande.

Sony Pictures has tapped Bad Boys For Life writer Chris Bremner to pen a new Men In Black film. Although plot details are not public, sources tell Deadline that when the script is complete, original series star Will Smith will be the first to read it in hopes that he will return to the franchise in some capacity.

Prime Video has released the first trailer for the final season of The Boys. The show has an updated release date of April 8, 2026, which will see the release of two episodes. Episodes will then drop weekly, leading to the series finale on May 20th.

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 opened to $109 million dollars worldwide over the weekend, a strong opening for the franchise. Additionally, last weekend's champion Zootopia 2 is nearing the one billion dollar mark with  $915 million dollars worldwide so far.

Sigourney Weaver is in talks to join the upcoming Tomb Raider series for Prime Video. Sophie Turner is set to star as Lara Croft, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge on as writer and executive producer.

Zootopia Breaks Records and Looking at 2026

Disney’s sequel sensation continues at the box office, as Zootopia 2 broke records this last weekend when it opened to the highest global box office for an animated film of ALL TIME with $556 million. Other global and domestic records were exceeded and the film paired up with its studio sibling Moana 2, which has the highest Thanksgiving opening of all time and now Zootopia 2 has the second. Wicked: For Good is standing strong at second place in domestic theaters and Now You See Me: Now You Don’t is trailing well behind it at third.

It’s a feather light news week, so we’re going to talk about some of the most anticipated movies coming out next year and the ones we’re really looking forward to!

Paramount has announced that the untitled hybrid live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feature from producer Neal H. Moritz will hit theaters Nov. 17, 2028. Additionally, an untitled film in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is set for theatrical release on Dec. 22, 2028.

Wicked is Good at the Box Office, Scarlett Johansson Enters The Exorcist Franchise, and Hugh Jackman = Wolverine Forever?

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes.

When Wicked: Part One released this time last year, it broke a slew of records for a Hollywood adaptation of a Broadway Show, as well for its talent behind and in front of the camera. Now Wicked: For Good has finally arrived on the scene and with a $150 million domestic, and $226 million global opening weekend, it has broken nearly every record its predecessor established, including Best Global and Domestic Opening for a Movie Based on a Broadway Show, as well as for stars Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo and director Jon M. Chu. It’s no surprise with numbers like these that Universal Pictures is already “underway” with ways to continue the franchise on the screen, according to the studio’s chief marketing executive, Michael Moses.

Scarlett Johansson will star in Mike Flanagan’s upcoming adaptation of The Exorcist. Backed by Universal and Blumhouse, Flanagan’s film is said to be in the universe of The Exorcist, but is not a remake or sequel according to the director. Flanagan’s take on the story was greenlit last year, more than 50 years after the original film came out in 1973.

Wolverines never say die…at least that’s the takeaway from Hugh Jackman’s comments recently on the Graham Norton show. When asked about his time as the iconic X-Men character, Jackman replied “Maybe. I’m never saying never again…” and went on to elaborate about having declared he wouldn’t play Logan until the Deadpool & Wolverine opportunity came about.

Amazon is officially moving forward with a new Stargate TV series from producer Martin Gero, who began his career in the original franchise. The project continues the legacy that started with the 1994 film starring James Spader and Kurt Russell and expanded through Stargate SG-1 and multiple spinoffs.

HBO has renewed several HBOMAX series for second seasons including crime drama Task and comedies I Love LA and The Chair Company as well as House of the Dragon for a 4th season and Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for a 2nd season.

Paramount, Comcast and Netflix have submitted bids to acquire all or part of Warner Bros. Discovery and a sale decision is expected to be made before Christmas, although regulators would most likely take at least a year to approve the sale.

Per an exclusive from The Hollywood Reporter exclusive, we’ve learned that Paramount is actively in talks with veteran producer Neal H. Morris, whose claims to fame include the Fast & The Furious and Sonic The Hedgehog film franchises, to kickstart a new live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film franchise.

Sony Pictures has made one of the biggest book acquisitions of 2025, landing film adaptation rights to James Islington’s Hierarchy series. The move comes as the book series’ second installment, The Strength of the Few, debuts at No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller list following its Nov. 11 U.S. release.

A24 has dropped the first trailer for How To Make A Killing, which stars Glen Powell and Margaret Qualley. The film debuts in theaters on Feb. 20th.

Barbara Broccoli‘s Eon Productions, the former producer of the James Bond franchise, and Qatar’s newly launched Film Committee are jointly producing a film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Othello,” directed and starring David Oyelowo, and also featuring Rachel Brosnahan and Cynthia Erivo.

Toby Wallace has been cast in a lead role in Netflix‘s upcoming “Assassin’s Creed” TV series.

Black Panther 3, New Star Trek Movie, The Running Man Falls, and Trailers Galore

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes

Sinners mastermind Ryan Coogler confirmed that Black Panther 3 is the next film he’s working on during Contenders Film: Los Angeles last week, an event put on by Deadline. This is exciting news for us MCU fans, as work on the third Black Panther film has been mostly quiet other than Denzel Washington’s confirmed slip up that he is in the movie.

A new Star Trek movie is being created under the writing and direction of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the duo behind Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Game Night as well as the recently wrapped Apple film Mayday, starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh. With the last feature film being Star Trek Beyond in 2016, there’s been little movement on both the Chris Pine-led series and new takes on the universe, but this new film will move forward unconnected to anything done previously.

Glen Powell in The Running Man was a favored first place winner at the box office this weekend, but was ousted by the sleight of hand of Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, the third movie in that franchise. Now You See Me racked up a global $75 million opening, while The Running Man limped across the finish line at $28 million. This marks Powell’s first big box office miss, when compared to openings for Twisters, Top Gun: Maverick, and Anybody But You, but the action film did have to compete against Predator: Badlands, which is holding strong at the box office still.

Nintendo and Illumination have released the first trailer for Super Mario Galaxy, the follow up to 2023's hit The Super Mario Brothers Movie. The film will hit theaters on April 3rd, 2026. Peacock has decided not to renew Poker Face for a third season. Natasha Lyonne exits as star, but series creator Rian Johnson has begun an effort to shop the show to other broadcasters for a two-season commitment and has cast Peter Dinklage to take over the role of Charlie Cale from Natasha Lyonne.

Sony Pictures has picked up the rights to the Chinese doll brand Labubu with the intent to launch a franchise based on the dolls in the near future.

Nintendo's live action Legend of Zelda movie has begun production and Nintendo social media accounts posted first look images earlier this week of Link and Zelda, the film's main characters. The film is currently set for release in May of 2027.

Doomsday Trailer is Nigh, Wonder Man Runtimes Rumor, Jimmy Olsen TV Series, Predator Badlands Box Office

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes

Though Disney and Marvel Studios have remained tight-lipped and cagey concerning details around the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, the Internet, and a few reputable trades, have collectively discerned that we apparently “know when the Avengers: Doomsday trailer is coming.” The prognosticators have deytermined the trailer will be attached to December’s Avatar: Fire & Ash – big news, if true! Another unconfirmed, but believable rumor that has taken the Internet by storm concerns Marvel TV’s Wonder Man series and its episode run times, which places the longest episode at 34 minutes and the shortest at 23 including credits.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, DC Studios has greenlit a Superman spinoff series focusing on standout Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen and coming to us from Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, the creators of Netflix’s award-winning mockumentary American Vandal. The series is said to focus on Olsen and other Daily Planet reporters, (though Lois Lane and Clark Kent were conspicuously excluded,) as he tackles cases involving superpowered villains, with Season One featuring Flash rogue Gorilla Grodd as a big bad.

Predator Badlands was the apex, ahem, predator at the box office last weekend debuting to $40 million domestically and doubling the haul internationally at $80 million worldwide. The film outperformed expectations, representing a much-needed shot of adrenaline in what has been a lethargic Fall box office, while also putting up bests for the franchise; beating out 2004’s Alien Vs Predator and 2018’s The Predator in the domestic and global arenas, respectively.

Disney has released the first official trailer for season 2 of Percy Jackson and The Olympians, which begins streaming on December 10th.

In gaming news, Skydance Games is once again pushing the release for the much-anticipated “Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra” video game from May 2026 to November 2026. Rockstar Games also announced that they would be delaying Grand Theft Auto 6 once again, this time from May 2026 to November 2026 as well.

Ryan Reynolds and Amazon MGM have teamed up to develop a remake of Thunderbolt & Lightfoot, a 1974 action comedy that starred Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges. Reynolds is eyeing to star in the adaptation and is also collaborating on the script with writers Enzo Mileti and Scott Wilson, a writing team who worked on season four of comedic crime show Fargo. Worst Halloween Box Office in Decades, Netflix Bids on WB, Stranger Things and Scream 7 Trailers

The battle for Warner Bros. Discovery is seeing a new champion enter the ring, with Netflix making some moves to put their own bid in for the studio’s properties. According to Reuters, the streaming pioneer engaged with investment bank Moelis & Co. in order to prepare an offer. Ironically, this is the same bank that worked with David Ellison at Skydance to take over Paramount whose first bid to buy Warner Bros. Discovery was rejected.

It was the worst weekend at the box office this year, with ticket sales coming in at just $52.4 million. This also makes it the lowest-grossing Halloween weekend in 31 years, excluding theater closures due to COVID in 2020. While new film Regretting You took in a respectable $50 million, Black Phone 2 really has the crown from the weekend having now brought in $104 million globally - another huge win for horror this year. Yorgos Lanthimos’ new film Bugonia, starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, is sitting at a small $11.1 million globally after breaking into more theaters.

Both Scream 7 and Stranger Things Season 5 released trailers recently. Stranger Things’ official trailer showed us a bit more of what to expect from that property and Scream 7, which releases on February 27, 2026, gave us a glance at the returning original cast members of Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, and David Arquette. As we discussed last week, Stranger Things will release in three parts on holiday weekends, four episodes on November 26, three episodes on Christmas Day, and the finale on New Year’s Eve.

A 'Conjuring' prequel film is in development at Warner Bros. and New Line, with short film director Rodrigue Huart in talks to direct. Franchise veterans Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, who co-wrote the two prior “Conjuring” films, 2023’s “The Nun II” and this September’s “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” are on board to pen the screenplay.

After landing the rights to turn one of the world’s biggest video games into an epic movie, Paramount has now landed two A-list filmmakers to develop it. Sources tell Deadline that Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and Peter Berg have joined Paramount and Activision to develop and produce a Call of Duty movie, with Paramount distributing a live-action feature film.

Hulu has ordered two more seasons of the revived King of the Hill animated series, the 16th and 17th overall and third and fourth seasons as a streaming original. Season 14 premiered in August and is the first half of Hulu’s initial two-season, 20-episode order; season 15 is set to debut in 2026.

Sam Mendes' four Beatles films have filled out the cast by adding the spouses of the four band members. Saoirse Ronan will play Linda McCartney, Anna Sawai will play Yoko Ono, Aimee Lou Wood will play Pattie Boyd, and Mia McKenna-Bruce will play Maureen Starkey.

Ariana Grande has joined the cast of season 13 of American Horror Story, which is currently on track to debut around Halloween 2026.

Toho has officially revealed the title of its next “Godzilla” feature that will serve as a sequel to Godzilla: Minus One as “Godzilla -0.0” (Godzilla Minus Zero). The film will once again be written, directed and produced by the same team behind 2023’s “Godzilla Minus One.” Currently, there are no plot details, but the studio is currently targeting a release date in late 2026.

Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are going back to the desert for The Mummy 4. The film will be directed by the duo known as Radio Silence, composed of Martin Bettinelli-Opin and Tyler Gillett, who directed 2019’s Ready or Not.

James Gunn Says No Darkseid For DCU, Elizabeth Olsen on MCU Return, Stranger Things Finale to Hit Big Screens

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes

During a recent round of interviews with various comic-centric YouTube channels last week, James Gunn seemingly revealed that despite rampant speculation, his DCU is not building toward the character of Darkseid as a “big bad”. As to why he’s not pursuing what many fans might argue is the obvious direction for the studio, he cited the efforts of the comic book cinematic universes that paved the way for his own, saying, "Using Darkseid as the big bad now is not necessarily the thing... because Zack did it so cool in his way and because of Thanos and Marvel." Gunn expanded his thoughts on both, acknowledging some of the shortcomings of the DCEU and detailing how similar Thanos and Darkseid are that it wouldn’t feel fresh for audiences.

While Marvel has yet to confirm the much-discussed Scarlet Witch’s return to the MCU, in a new interview with beauty, fashion and pop culture outlet InStyle, Elizabeth Olsen reiterated that she's ready to step back into the role. "It's ridiculous," she said of making MCU movies. "We're grown people behaving like children on a playground. We're flying. We're shooting things out of our hands. And it's a character that I've gotten to return to so many times over 10 years. It's good to put her down and then I miss her, and I want her back. I'd jump at the opportunity to be in her shoes again."
Last week, Netflix revealed its plans to release the feature-length finale of Stranger Things' final season in theaters, reversing course after the streamer had previously rejected the Duffer Brothers' theatrical release pitch. Theaters will screen the finale starting Dec. 31 at 5 p.m. PT — coinciding with its global Netflix debut — and continuing through Jan. 1, 2026.

  • Disney+ will begin streaming The Fantastic Four: First Steps on Nov. 5, following the film's $521 million worldwide box office haul over the summer.

  • Over the weekend, Sony's Crunchyroll released Chainsaw Man – The Movie, which topped the domestic box office with $17.2 million and reached $108 million globally. Black Phone 2 continued its solid run, surpassing $80 million worldwide. Regretting You debuted in third place with a better-than-expected $22.9 million, while the Bruce Springsteen biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere disappointed with $16.1 million in its opening weekend.

  • Paramount Pictures is finalizing a deal to acquire Ti West's adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, with Johnny Depp set to play Ebenezer Scrooge. The film will release on November 13, 2026.

  • Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler are in talks to star in Joseph Kosinski‘s big-screen reboot of Miami Vice.

  • Sony Pictures Animation will produce a sequel to its 2021 Oscar-nominated feature The Mitchells vs. the Machines. Production is expected to begin early next year.

  • IMAX has unveiled its planned releases for 2026 at an Investor Presentation and at this moment, Spider-Man Brand New Day is not included in the lineup. The film will be released on July 31, which means it's debuting right in the middle of a pretty crowded IMAX season: the live-action Moana and The Odyssey are arriving on July 10 and July 17, respectively.

  • Disney has officially exited its partnership with the BBC on Doctor Who after two years. For now, the BBC does plan to air an upcoming Christmas special next year and then continue the series on the network.

  • Captain America star Chris Evans and his wife Alba Baptista have welcomed their first child, a girl named Alma Grace Baptista Evans

Scrapped Ben Solo Star Wars Film, Blade Star Mia Goth Gives An Update, Walton Goggins Teams Up with Amber Midthunder

Mia Goth is the latest actor shedding a bit of light on the long-shelved Blade movie from Marvel Studios. In an interview with Elle, promoting her upcoming appearance in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, Goth shared only that she is still attached to the film and commented that “It’s for the best that it’s taken the time it has. They want to do it right.” This is in line with Kevin Feige’s comments this summer that the film is still moving forward.

In an interview with the AP this week, Adam Driver dropped some major information about the Ben Solo movie in Star Wars that never was. Driver explained that Lucasfilm was interested in continuing his character’s story in a film that had a script written by Steven Soderbergh. Driver was supportive of the script and the creative team took it to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman at Disney who turned the project down as they “didn’t see how Ben Solo was alive.”

Fan favorites Amber Midthunder and Walton Goggins will star in a new action movie from the creator of the John Wick franchise. The film, called Painter, has a major executive producer credit - with Avatar and Titanic director James Cameron serving in that role. Stunt coordinator Garrett Warren, who worked with Cameron on the last two Avatars as well as Logan and the Road House reboot, is directing the movie; a debut effort. The movie’s plot will focus on Midthunder’s character, trained as a child who must save her father after he is kidnapped.

Lightning Round

  • Kate McKinnon has joined the cast of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” Season 3 and will play Aphrodite.

  • Jim Carrey is in talks to star in a live action film adaptation of The Jetsons from Warner Bros. Pictures that has Colin Trevorrow attached to direct and write the script. There have been attempts to reboot the animated series from the 1960s in some form at various times over the years, but this is the first project that seems to have some traction.

  • Blumhouse's The Black Phone 2 took the number one spot at the box office this weekend with a worldwide box office opening of $42 million, with $26.5 million from North America and $15.5 million from international markets. Disney’s Tron: Ares is at $103M global for ten-days and is currently bound to lose more than $132M off a $220 million net production cost.

  • Colman Domingo has been cast as the voice of the Cowardly Lion in “Wicked: For Good.” The announcement was made on the “Wicked” Instagram account on Monday, with Domingo hiding behind a lion stuffed animal before revealing himself and saying: “See you in Oz!”

  • Netflix has won the rights to adapt the popular Asmodee board game Settlers of Catan and is planning an array of projects — scripted and unscripted, live-action and animated based on the franchise.

  • AppleTV has released some first look photos for Shrinking season 3 and has confirmed a release date. The series starring Jason Segel and Harrison Ford returns with a one-hour episode on Jan. 28, 2026 on Apple TV. The 11-episode season will then release new episodes weekly on Wednesdays, until the April 8 finale.

  • Netflix has entered development on a series about the Kennedy family, described as the American version of ‘The Crown’ and Michael Fassbender has been cast as Joseph Kennedy Sr.

  • Andor actress Denise Gough has joined the cast of Greta Gerwig’s Narnia adaptation.

Marvel TV NYCC, Peacemaker’s Finale and Future, Tron: Ares Underperforms

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes

While Marvel Studios allegiance to San Diego and Hall H seems to have waned in recent years, not so for last weekend’s New York City Comic Con where our favorite cinematic universe teased the latest and greatest for their small screen offerings. Let’s rundown the biggest headlines from Marvel Television:

  • Wonder Man released its official teaser trailer alongside the announcement that the 8-episode series had been delayed from December 2025 to January 27, 2026

  • Fans in attendance were treated to an exclusive trailer for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, presented by Daredevil actor Charlie Cox who was reunited with Jessica Jones actor Krysten Ritter. The series was confirmed for a March 2026 release on Disney Plus and we also learned Wilson Bethel’s Bullseye will return and Matthew Lillard will be an antagonist to Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin.

  • Separate from NYCC, but still worth mentioning on the subject of Daredevil: Born Again, speaking with Entertainment Tonight Marvel TV Head Brad Winderbaum shared the season’s connection to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, saying "We are communicating a lot with the team on Spider-Man: Brand New Day to make sure that there's coherence there. We don't want to spoil anything, but it very much exists in the same world and it is important."

  • VisionQuest and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Season 2 were confirmed for Fall 2026 release windows, while X-Men ’97 Season 2 was announced for Summer 2026. All three shows debuted exclusive trailers not yet released to the public and both animated series confirmed their third seasons to be in development.

On the DCU TV side of things, Peacemaker Season 2 aired its final episode last week, and while we’ll avoid getting specific with spoilers given the recency, when asked about a third season James Gunn did provide comments on the series’ future and its impact on the DCU at large, saying, “This is about the other stories in which this [cliffhanger] will play out,” he said. “Never say never. But right now, this is about the future of the DCU.” Gunn also shared that he spoke with Ryan Reynolds about a Deadpool cameo in Peacemaker and that while the actor was interested, the logistics required to pull off the crossover were ultimately deemed too daunting.

Despite Tron: Ares’ number one spot debut at the box office last weekend with a $60.5 million global haul, the numbers are disappointingly muted when weighed against projections of $85-95 million and a reported $180 million budget. The film currently holds a 56% on Rotten Tomatoes and B+ Cinemascore.

HBO revealed the debut trailer for Game of Thrones spin off A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms at New York Comic Con last week and has announced a premiere date of Jan. 18.

Bradley Cooper is in talks to star opposite Margot Robbie in the Ocean’s Eleven prequel at Warner Bros. Twisters director Lee Isaac Chung is attached to direct with Robbie's Lucky Chap producing.

Warner Brothers has announced that an untitled follow up to A Minecraft Movie will hit theaters on July 23rd, 2027. Jared Hess returns to direct and will write the script with Chris Galletta, one of the writers of the original.

Disney has officially resumed development on a live action adaptation of Tangled. The project has The Greatest Showman's Michael Gracey attached to direct a script from Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. Scarlett Johansson is being eyed to star as Mother Gothel.

Christopher Briney, one of the leads of Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty, has joined HBO Max’s Emmy-winning comedy Hacks for its upcoming fifth season, which is currently in production.

Moviegoers were in their showgirl era this weekend as Taylor Swift’s album release party for her 12th album, The Life of a Showgirl, took the top spot at the box office with an estimated $34 million. The one-weekend show is over, though, and Tron: Ares is coming through to open this weekend with estimates hoping it rakes in more than $40 million. Meanwhile the Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt headlined movie The Smashing Machine from A24 barely even slapped anyone across the face, opening to just $5.9 million. Paul Thomas Anderon’s One Battle After Another continues to bring in dollars as well,43 million so far Domestic,  though it had a 50% drop weekend-over-weekend.

Murphy and original creator/writer Steven Knight are executive producers for the series, which will take place post-World War II.

In lieu of much else to report on for features this week, we thought we’d look ahead to the films and television series we can look forward to for the rest of the year that we maybe have or haven’t discussed yet.

The Simpsons Yoinks Marvel’s Release Date, Trailers for Wicked, Wolverine, Star Wars Visions, Plus Villeneuve’s 007 Casting Criteria

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes

It appears as though Marvel Studios much speculated film that was slated to release between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars in July 2027, won’t be happening after all; or at least not that July, as Disney has replaced the untitled project with a sequel to The Simpsons Movie dated for July 23, 2027. The move comes as a surprise to many Marvel fans who anticipated a possible Doctor Strange or Shang-Chi sequel to take place between the Avengers tentpoles but is in keeping with what Bob Iger and Kevin Feige have promised about a slowdown in production. Elsewhere, with Marvel Zombies premiering on Disney Plus last week, Marvel TV head Brad Winderbaum teased a possible season 2, but emphasized that would be contingent on viewership and new Disney Plus subscriptions. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Olsen took the opportunity to share that although she recorded lines for the series, she doesn’t remember anything about the show or plot.

It was a huge week for trailers from a bevy of our favorite franchises, so lets run them down with another good old fashioned Trailer Park:

  • Insomniac and Sony released the first gameplay trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine on the PS5, which will release in fall of 2026.

  • Lucasfilm unveiled a new trailer for Star Wars; Visions Volume 3 which also announced the cast that includes Anna Sawai, Freddie Highmore, George Takei, Harvey Guillén, Jodie Turner-Smith, Judith Light, Simu Liu, Stephanie Hsu, and Steve Buscemi.

  • The final trailer for Jon M. Chu’s Wicked: For Good released last Wednesday morning to much acclaim.

  • And finally, a new trailer for 20th Century’s Avatar: Fire and Ash teased more of the villainous faction and stakes.

Director Denis Villeneuve shed new light on his upcoming version of 007 for Amazon/MGM; sharing that the casting process will begin next year after he’s completed production on Dune: Part Three for Warner Bros and that he is looking to cast a “relatively unknown” “fresh face” actor in their 20s or 30s. Additional criteria the filmmaker included is that the performer must hail from the British Isles and be male, as well as his desire to capture what Fleming called “a blunt instrument” — the lethal but “extremely dull, uninteresting man to whom things happened.” If Villeneuve and team stay true to these parameters, it potentially rules out many fan-casted favorites and seems to be in more alignment with the Broccoli family’s traditions with the character than expected with new creatives in control.

Mark Ronson is slated to reunite with Greta Gerwig to score her Chronicles of Narnia adaptation at Netflix. Ronson previously served as executive music producer for Gerwig’s Barbie.

Amazon MGM Studios‘ adaptation of Rebecca Yarros’ bestselling novel Fourth Wing is closing in on a new showrunner. Wednesday Season 2 executive producer Meredith Averill is in final negotiations to board the project as writer and executive producer.

Sony revealed that Spider-Man: Beyond the SpiderVerse will arrive a week earlier than expected, and land on June 18, 2027. Notably, that new date will cover the Juneteenth holiday as well as Father’s Day. It previously was dated for June 25, 2027.

Comedian Bill Burr is in talks to join the cast of Aaron Sorkin and Sony Pictures’ sequel to The Social Network, after Jeremy Strong, Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White were officially cast. The film also has been retitled The Social Reckoning and will officially hit theaters on Oct. 9, 2026.

A newly created AI “actress” named Tilly Norwood, designed by the studio Xicoia under Particle6, has reportedly drawn interest from Hollywood talent agencies. The announcement sparked major backlash from real actors, with critiques about replacing human talent, the ethics of compositing real faces, and calls to boycott agencies that represent AI personas.

James Gunn didn’t leave us hanging this week as the writer/director/co-chair of DC Studios shared an Instagram post of his second draft of the script for Man of Tomorrow. An image taking up most of the cover shows an anatomical cutout of a human head and brain leading to speculation that Brainiac will be the villain Superman and perhaps Lex Luthor have to team up against. Matt Reeves also chimed in on the same topic, though separately, and shared that the villain for The Batman: Part II will be a character that has “never really been done” in a film before. Reeves also confirmed his films are Elseworlds projects not part of the DCU.

The first trailer has been released for Sony's comedic reimagining of the 1997 film Anaconda which stars Jack Black and Paul Rudd. The film will hit theaters on December 25.

DC announced last week that its Batman No. 1, a relaunch of the Caped Crusader by writer Matt Fraction and artist Jorge Jiménez, has sold over 500,000 copies, making it the top selling comic of the year by far.

Stan Lee will posthumously return to L.A. Comic con, this time as a hologram that will use AI to have conversations with fans. Fans will be able to speak with the hologram at the Stan Lee Experience section of the con, a 1,500 ft. enclosed booth which costs between $15-$20 to enter, depending on whether you buy tickets ahead of time. And like meeting a celebrity or getting autographs, there will be paid opportunities to take photos with the hologram or have a three-minute, one-on-one conversation with it.

Taylor Swift is returning to theaters from Oct. 3-Oct. 5 for her album release. Swift is partnering with AMC theaters for the event film which will feature behind the scenes making of her new album Life of a Showgirl, as well as a music video premiere. The Eras Tour film was a phenomenon two years ago, becoming the top grossing concert film of all time with $261.6 million globally.

After rumors last week that Paramount was looking into making a bid for Warner Brothers, Puck News is now reporting that a well placed inside source has verified that Netflix is preparing to make a bid for the studio as well.

Have We Seen RDJ’s Doom? Man of Tomorrow Details, This Year’s Emmy Winners

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes

Images and video featuring promotional artwork, including a laser light show, of Marvel’s Doctor Doom surfaced last week during Walt Disney Studios’ Marketing Expo in Shanghai. While many fans and outlets of varying reputation and credibility were quick to assume and label the imagery as officially tied to Avengers: Doomsday and our first look of Robert Downey Jr in the role, there is nothing in the aforementioned marketing materials that brands the content as Marvel Studios’. Still, the concept art and accompanying light show are exciting as potential teases of what this highly anticipated version of the villain may look and feel like when he finally hits the big screen next December.

In a completely unexpected turn of events during a recent appearance on The Howard Stern Show, James Gunn dished out more details surrounding his recently announced sequel to Superman, titled Man of Tomorrow, including an intended April 2026 slate to begin filming. The filmmaker shared, “It is a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat,” he said. “And it’s more complicated than that. It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly.” On the other end of the DCU, during a red carpet appearance at the Emmys, Matt Reeves shared star Robert Pattinson’s reaction to reading the long awaited script, saying “He’s Batman, and if he doesn’t like it, not good. I was super excited. I thought that he really would [like it] because the things that it does for his character, for Batman and for Bruce, have never been done before in this way. I had a feeling that he would respond in this way, but the fact that he did was incredibly encouraging.”

It was a night of celebration for newcomer series at Sunday’s 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, as HBO Max's rookie series The Pitt dominated the drama categories while Apple TV+'s The Studio swept comedy honors. Netflix's limited series Adolescence led the field with six trophies, including wins for writer-producer-star Stephen Graham, and HBO/HBO Max topped all networks with nine total Emmys, followed by Apple TV+ with seven. Notable firsts included Tramell Tillman becoming the first Black man to win Supporting Actor in a Drama for Severance, Seth Rogen claiming his first Emmy ever for The Studio, and The Penguin’s Cristin Milioti bringing home the only award for the series for her portrayal of Sofia Falcone.

Universal and Illumination have officially titled the Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, taking its name from Nintendo's 2007 Wii game and setting an April 3, 2026 release date. The entire voice cast including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, and Jack Black will return for the follow-up to the record-breaking original that earned $1.36 billion worldwide.

Amazon MGM/s Highlander reboot, which was set to go into principal photography this month, will now be pushed into 2026 after Henry Cavill sustained an injury during pre-production.

A24 has reportedly won the bidding war for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre film and TV rights, beating out competitors including Jordan Peele and Taylor Sheridan. The horror studio plans to first develop a series from Strange Darling director JT Mollner, producer Roy Lee, and Glen Powell, though Powell will not star in the project.

Oscar nominated actress Mary McDonnell has joined the cast of Marvel's upcoming Vision series, the Hollywood Reporter has learned. At this time, her role has not been disclosed.

Next Superman Film Titled, Ryan Reynolds Finally Admits to His Crimes, and Horror Rules The Box Office!

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes

Right after our episode last week, our pal James Gunn dropped big news on Wednesday - the next Superman film written by him will be called Man of Tomorrow. Gunn, David Corneswet, and others involved shared particular artwork by DC Comics President Jim Lee that showed Lex Luthor in a mech suit to make the announcement. In typical Gunn fashion, the DC Studios co-chair has teased this film isn’t a direct sequel, but is the next installment in what he calls the “Superman saga.” The film’s title is reminiscent of the Milly Alcock led Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which releases next year. In other DC movie news, Weapons director Zach Cregger addressed rumors that have been circulating about his involvement with a Joker and Harley Quinn movie. Cregger called stories about him having written a treatment for the two iconic DC villains “blown out of proportion,” but did indicate that he has a couple of films he’s interested in working on, though he hasn’t spoken with James Gunn yet.

At the Toronto International Film Festival last Friday, Ryan Reynolds finally admitted the internet’s worst kept secret - that he was the one who leaked the original Deadpool test footage in 2014 to the world wide web. Reynolds went on to say that Fox simply didn’t seem interested in releasing an R-rated superhero movie and his passion for the character led him to the extreme action, which he doesn’t regret. Fans of Deadpool are likely forever grateful that Reynolds did what he did, which led to pressure on the studio to make the film a reality. In other questionable swings from stars both in front of and behind the camera, The Russos released a blurry image with the caption #Doomsday Is Coming via Instagram earlier today.

No last rites are being read for horror at the box office this year, as the supposed final installment in the Conjuring universe, The Conjuring: Last Rites, raked in $84 million domestically this weekend for its opening. This massive box office marks the best for this franchise ever, and the third biggest opening for a horror film of all-time. Warner Brothers and New Line are laughing all the way to the bank, having projected a $35 million opening box office and the movie cost about $55 million to make. The film’s global take as of today is $194 million. In other Conjuring news, a series in development at HBO Max set in the universe took a big step forward today, hiring Nancy Won as writer, executive producer, and showrunner, who will write the series alongside Peter Cameron and Cameron Squires.

The White Lotus creator Mike White and HBO have zeroed in on France as the location for the upcoming fourth season of the hit murder mystery comedy-drama series, sources tell Deadline.

Two time Academy Award nominee Djimon Hounsou has joined the cast of Amazon MGM's reboot of Highlander, the Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.

The first trailer for Rian Johnson's upcoming Knives Out film Knives Out: Wake Up Dead Man has been released. The film is set for release in select theaters Nov. 26 before its streaming debut December 12.

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes

While speaking with Variety for a cover story, Gambit actor Channing Tatum revealed that he will be toning down the intentionally unintelligible Cajun accent he used in Deadpool & Wolverine for Avengers: Doomsday, as the Russo Brothers want to "keep the drama" and avoid going "full Deadpool" with the character. The actor also confirmed he suffered an on-set injury that required pain medication and will need six months of physical therapy as production on the film continues.

Star Wars: Starfighter has officially locked in its ensemble cast, with Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, Matt Smith, who will play a villain according to sources at Deadline, Mia Goth and newcomer Flynn Gray among the latest to board the space opera alongside Ryan Gosling in the lead. Additionally, a black and white first look image depicting Gosling and Gray set against a Tatooine-esque Land speeder was officially released.

Marvel Animation has officially unleashed the undead with the first trailer for Marvel Zombies, the TV-MA rated, four-episode series hitting Disney+ on September 24th. Continuing from the "What If...?" episode that asked "What If... Zombies?!", this adult animated series follows desperate survivors as they traverse a dystopian landscape fighting super-powered zombies to save what's left of their world. The trailer showcases tons of undead violence and features the debut of Blade Knight, a Moon Knight and Blade variant who slices up zombie Avengers in spectacular fashion.

Disney Animation Studios’ next original film will be titled Hexed. The official logline reads “Disney’s Hexed is an all-new original film that follows an awkward teenage boy and his Type A mom, who discover that what makes him unusual, might just be magical powers that will turn their lives and a secret world of magic, upside down.”

Weapons, which lost its No. 1 position last weekend to Netflix’s K-Pop Demon Hunters, reclaimed its crown, earning an estimated $12.8 million over the four-day holiday. So far, the horror hit has earned $135 million domestically and $235.2 million globally. In second place, the 50th anniversary of Steven Spielberg’s classic Jaws collected $9.9 million after Universal re-released it in theaters.

Netflix has set a two-week theatrical window for its highly anticipated ensemble sequel, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. Wake Up Dead Man will release in select theaters on Nov. 26 for a two-week run until it comes to Netflix on Dec. 12.

Universal Pictures has removed Jordan Peele's untitled fourth film from its October 2026 release date, marking the second delay for the project that was originally scheduled for Christmas 2024. The Oscar-winning director is still working on the horror thriller, which has yet to begin filming and remains shrouded in secrecy beyond Peele's previous comment that it could be his favorite movie if he makes it right.

Paramount has signed a deal with gaming company Activision to develop a live action Call of Duty film.

Spider-Man Adds Severance Star Tramell Tillman, Archie Is Coming To The Big Screen, and You’re Already Paying More For AppleTV+

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes

Trammell Tillman, the break-out star of Severance who plays Seth Milchick on the Apple+ show, will be part of the Spider-Man: Brand New Day cast. Variety got the scoop on the Emmy-nominated actor joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but no details on who he’s playing were announced.

Move over Marvel and DC…Archie is here to take us by storm? In an interesting move from filmmakers Phil Lord and Chritopher Miller, Universal is fronting an Archie adaptation for the big screen. Comics legend Tom King is writing the screenplay and former 20th Century Studios President of Production Emma Watts is producing. King made the leap from page to screen recently in the DCU, penning Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow and the Lanterns series, but is well-known for his comics in Marvel, DC, and beyond. The CW show Riverdale adapted the Archie comics in its own unique way and plot details for this film are unknown. Universal also produced a version of the Archie characters in Josie and the Pussycats in 2001.

Though we sing the praises for AppleTV+ loudly and frequently on this show, we’ve also often touted it as being one of the more inexpensive streaming services. Alas, all good things come to an end, as the streamer announced its cost jumped from $9.99 to $12.99 effective August 21. The annual rate of $99.99 has not changed yet. As of now, AppleTV+ stands alone as the only streamer that doesn’t have an ad-supported option.

Dafne Keen and Saara Chaudry have joined the third season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Keen will play Artemis, the Greek goddess of the moon and the hunt. Saara Chaudry will play Zoë Nightshade, an immortal hunter and Artemis’ lieutenant.

Guardians of the Galaxy and Jumaji star Karen Gillan has joined the cast of the Amazon MGM's Highlander reboot and will play Heather, the love interest of Henry Cavill's character.

The first trailer for season 13 of Futurama has been released. All 10 episodes of the new season premiere on Hulu on September 15.

Nicolas Cage is in talks to star in season five of HBO's True Detective.

NBC has reversed course on the release schedule of the upcoming The Office spin off The Paper - shifting to a binge release. Instead of the previous plan of rolling out over four weeks, the show will now debut all 10 episodes at once on September 4.

K-Pop Demon Hunters and Weapons duked it out for the top spot and the estimates on Box Office Mojo show Demon Hunters coming out on top. The Netflix sensation was only released for one weekend and clearly had a draw. Now production company Sony is in talks to create a sequel with Netflix.

Variety has learned that despite announcing plans for a season two earlier this year, Paramount has opted not to move forward with another season of the Dexter prequel series Dexter: Original Sin. The studio is planning however on assembling a writer's room to develop a second season of Dexter: Resurrection, the sequel series.

Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald, the creators behind Netflix’s Cobra Kai are in talks to bring Knight Rider, the 1980s David Hasselhoff-led action drama centered on a computerized talking car, to the big screen.

Deadpool Speculation, James Gunn On the Superman Saga and Peacemaker Season 2, Fallout Season 2 Trailer

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes

It would appear as though Ryan Reynold’s social media stunt we discussed last week is having the intended effect as a few of our favorite trades can’t seem to come to a consensus. First, in the August 15 edition of Heat Vision, The Hollywood Reporter’s exclusive column for all things comics, horror and sci-fi, Borys Kitt claimed that their sources confirmed Deadpool’s inclusion in Avengers: Doomsday. However, later that day Deadline refuted the speculation by citing their own sources who said the actor has not been seen on the London set and is not intended to appear in either upcoming Avengers film. In less nebulous Doomsday talk, Nightcrawler actor Alan Cumming described his experience returning to the role as healing, after a terrible experience on 2003’s X2.

It’s a big week for DC Studios with Superman hitting Video-On-Demand last Friday and Peacemaker Season 2 premiering this Thursday. While on the red carpet for the show's debut in New York, DC Studios head and Peacemaker’s showrunner James Gunn defended Superman’s quick availability for home viewing after just 35 days in theaters, by sharing how the film impacts the series. “It’s a big part, definitely Superman leads directly into Peacemaker,” said Gunn, while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter. “Superman leads into this show and then we have the setting up of all of the rest of the DCU in this season of Peacemaker, it’s incredibly important,” he continued. Gunn also teased the future for Superman on the big screen, saying, “I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the ‘Superman Saga.’ The treatment is done, which means a very, very worked-out treatment. I’m working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.”

Back to the Wasteland we go, as Amazon’s marketing for Fallout Season 2 has begun in preparation for its December 17 premiere, with a full-court press that includes first look images and a trailer that was released earlier today. The images showcase returning characters played by Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, Moises Arias, Aaron Moten and Kyle McLachlan, while the two minute 42-second trailer gave us our first glimpse at Justin Theroux’s enigmatic Mr. House and McCauley Caulkin in an undisclosed role, which were of course accompanied, yet again, by the crooning stylings of The Ink Spots.

In an interview with Collider, Marvel Zombies director Bryan Andrews confirmed that the series has moved its release date up to September 24th, and all episodes of the series will be available to stream at once. He also confirmed that the four episodes will be rated TV-MA.

At a recent London fan event Sir Ian McKellen claimed Frodo and Gandalf will appear in Andy Serkis' upcoming The Hunt for Gollum film without specifying whether he and Elijah Wood would reprise their iconic roles.

NBCUniversal announced that it has acquired all rights, excluding publishing, to Robert Ludlum’s popular Jason Bourne and Treadstone book series.

Weapons took the number one spot at the box office again in its second weekend with a drop of only 43%, bringing its worldwide total to nearly $150 million dollars. Nobody 2 generated around $15 million dollars worldwide in its opening weekend on a $25 million dollar budget.

Netflix has dropped a trailer for the second half of season 2 of Wednesday, which will stream on September 3rd.

Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers are in talks for a massive overall deal with Paramount that includes both streaming and features with a big theatrical component, something the pair have not been able to get at their current home of more than a decade, Netflix.

Original Scary Movie actresses Regina Hall and Anna Faris are coming back as Brenda and Cindy, respectively, for the Wayans Brothers’ restart of the comedy franchise, which is eyeing a 2026 release.

An original film beat out a sequel this weekend, with Zach Cregger’s new horror film Weapons starting its box office run by bringing in $71.8 million globally, while Disney’s Freakier Friday would have liked to switch places with it, opening to only $43.8 million globally. The Bob Odenkirk-led Nobody 2 will release next week and is expected to open to a modest $10 million domestically.

Ryan Reynolds posted an image of the Avengers logo with a red anarchy symbol spray painted over it to his Instagram this morning, which fans are taking as a tease that he will appear in next year's Avengers: Doomsday. The rumors are that the next list of cast members in the film is also “ridiculously long” so it seems like Reynolds is getting the jump on the announcement.

Peacock released our first extended look at The Paper, a new mockumentary series spun off from The Office, and made by Greg Daniels and Michael Koman. The trailer gives us a glimpse into several of the characters personalities and we see an old favorite, Oscar Martinez, who is NOT into being filmed again. The show is headlined by Domhnall Gleeson who plays an editor brought in to save a Toledo newspaper.

Netflix has given an early season three renewal to its live-action adaptation of One Piece. The renewal comes several months ahead of the season two premiere, which is slated for 2026.

Max Minghella, known for his role in The Handmaid’s Tale, may join the DCU’s film Clayface, according to Variety. He would join Tom Rhys Harries Naomi Ackie.

Hulk Joins Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Fantastic Four’s Box Office Drop, 007 Finds Its Writer

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes

With the MCU’s latest big screen offering now in theaters, as rabid fans, it only makes sense to look to the future, and apparently Marvel and Sony agree, as myriad fresh details surrounding the franchise’s next film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day began hitting the internet all weekend. First, last Friday morning Sony released a 9-second video teasing features of Spidey’s new suit, which was quickly followed up with a 23-second video with star Tom Holland, in suit, performing some minor acrobatics the next day. Finally, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the longstanding rumor that Mark Ruffalo is reprising his role as Bruce Banner/The Hulk for the film, while Better Call Saul actor, Michael Mando, was also announced to be returning as Mac Gargan/The Scorpion.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps continued its box office reign, raking in $39.6 million its second weekend for a $368 million total global haul. While far from a defeat, the staggering 67% drop from the flick’s first weekend presents a significant loss in momentum and is in stark contrast with expectations, which were largely fueled by positive reception and strong word of mouth among critics and fans. Elsewhere, Superman crossed the $550 million milestone internationally, and Jurassic World: Rebirth passed $750 million at the global box office after 5 weeks in theaters, becoming only the third film of 2025 to do so behind Lilo & Stitch and A Minecraft Movie.

Amazon MGM’s upcoming James Bond film being directed by Dune’s Denis Villeneuve, is quickly coming together as Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has been hired to pen the script. Apart from Peaky Blinders, Knight has enjoyed a storied career on the small screen as a screenwriter, director and producer involved with projects such as Apple TV’s See and Netflix’s All The Light We Cannot See, while also co-creating Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?
