In this message from Psalm 23, we are reminded that our Good Shepherd not only leads us but also protects us. Even when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we need not fear, because His rod and His staff comfort and defend us. God’s presence brings courage in the face of danger and peace in the midst of chaos. As we place our trust in His protection, we can walk with confidence knowing that He stands between us and every threat, guarding our hearts and guiding our steps.

In today’s culture, many people have formed their own connotations and meaning to calling other people sheep and thinking themselves as one. But like sheep, we need a committed shepherd who will care for and guide us. Today we ask and answer why we need a shepherd, how and where we should follow our shepherd and if we can trust Him.

When we have made Christ our shepherd, his goodness and mercy are always upon us. In times when we don’t sense it, it is still there. The Bible helps to provide that right-thinking of God’s goodness when we stray. It reminds us that he is a God who cares, who is capable, and who is for us. He is our hope and our portion. As Christians we need not fear because we are his–and he is the Good Shepherd.

This Sunday we kicked off our new series in Psalm 23, exploring how Jesus is our good shepherd who is 1) qualified, 2) endured the cost to be our shepherd, and 3) takes the responsibility for our care and provision. God as our shepherd means God takes care of us. His majesty, as revealed in creation, points to a mighty God who is more than capable to handle even our life’s biggest challenges. We can put our trust in him because he is trustworthy and capable–he holds the universe in the span of his hand.
