Five years ago, I was a Gang Prosecutor in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. One winter night, I decided to try an experiment: Could I learn Spanish from watching a telenovela? Five years later, I left my job and Chicago, to move to Mexico City, to write the telenovela of my dreams. I don’t understand Spanish or The Metric System. It’s a new town (Puerto Vallarta), with a new dog (“Shyla”), and a new challenge crossing the big street that I need to cross to get anywhere. And a month in Sayulita did not improve my Spanish, but I do sound more like Bob & Doug McKenzie from “The Great White North” than I used to...
