In 1948, Idaho faced a beaver problem: too many furry engineers were wreaking havoc in lowland towns. Enter Elmo Heter and his genius (and slightly crazy) solution: parachute 76 beavers into the remote wilderness. With WWII parachutes, specially designed crates, and a very patient test beaver named Geronimo, the animals were airlifted to the Chamberlain Basin, where they thrived. In August 2013, 19-year-old Bryce set out to drive home to his parents in Southern California. What should have been a seven-hour trip turned into a twenty-hour odyssey of strange phone calls, roadside stops, a wrecked SUV near Castaic Lake…and then nothing.

More than a decade later, Bryce has never been found. His case remains one of the most unsettling mysteries of the West Coast.
