In 2014 and 2022, the EU initiated sanctions regimes against Russia. The lists of entities and individuals were originally supposed to target Russia’s econmic and political elites only. But since 2024, the list has been expanded to include “disinformation” and is being used to target journalists and academics even in EU and Schengen-state areas, like the German nationals Alina Lipp and Hüseyin Dogru, or my countrymen, Jacques Baud, and Nathalie YambIt’s a dystopian reality but certainly not the first time something like this happens. While Willy Brandt’s kneeling in Warsaw has been etched into German collective memory, and remembrance of the six million victims of the Holocaust forms the core of Germany’s “culture of remembrance,” the country's guilt toward the 27 million citizens of the Soviet Union who were killed remains a taboo—especially now, as Europe prepares for the next major war against the East. The 59 individuals sanctioned by the EU are just the beginning. The eurocrats are only getting started with their campaign against internal dissent. Their unhinged nature is as much a function of the way they are losing the Ukraine proxy-war as also a direct result of 30 years of End-of-History megalomania in the West. Paired with the loss of the USA as a transatlantic parter, the Eurocrats are cornered. But instead of reversing course and correcting their anti-democratic actions, they are set to crack down even harder on dissent from within.

The European Union has started using the Anti-Russia sanctions as a repressive tool to smuther civil society dissent within the West. Last week, Colonel Jacque Baud, a former Swiss army member and NATO advisor was sanctioned, but so were several others before him, including activists and Journalists. One of them is Hüsseyin Dogru, a german national who was sanctioned already in May. Fifty-nine individuals are by now sanctioned by the European Union in pursuit of punishing Russia for the War in Ukraine. Many of them are Russian citizens but more and more the EU is putting its own citizens and those of third states on this list, for reasons that have often little to do with Russia.
