• Read Genesis 50:19-21. What does Joseph’s response teach us about true forgiveness?

• The parallel between Genesis 50 and the Exodus suggests that Egypt might have had a very different role to play in the story of the Bible. What can these two different Pharaohs (the Pharaoh of Genesis 50 vs. the Pharaoh of Exodus 7-14) teach us about the proper role of civil government in the Kingdom of God?

During the upcoming season of Advent, Oak Forest Anglican Church will be singing the Magnificat (the Song of Mary) each Sunday. We have produced this recording so that you can familiarize yourself with the tune. The lyrics are below:

• The theme of God’s blessings in Genesis have been about fruitfulness, abundance, multiplication/expansion, and growth. Because we are a part of God’s covenant family and experience his blessings, how do you find yourself responding to those blessings? In what ways are you being a blessing?

• If you were on the receiving end of this blessing/prophecy about your temperament and your life to come, what animal might Jacob have used to describe you and what would he have written to describe you?

• Joseph’s testing awakens the brothers’ buried guilt about their sin. How does conviction function as a sign of God’s mercy rather than His rejection? What practices help us respond rightly to conviction instead of resisting it?

• In Joseph’s “death” in ch 37, we saw a foreshadow of Jesus’ death - blameless, loved by his father but despised by his brothers, sold for silver, delivered into the pit. What New Covenant foreshadowing do we see in the life of Joseph after his “resurrection and ascension”? As the body of Christ, what part do we play in this Eucatastrophe?

Reflection Questions:

• Joseph had to rely on dreams and visions for God to speak to him, and although we have God’s Word available to us all the time, we often undervalue it. In what ways do we still try to rely on a modern day version of dreams and visions rather than the Bible when we’re seeking God? Do you go to God’s word for wisdom and guidance or are there other places you go first?

• Just like Pharaoh, our world still has a wisdom crisis. As we’ve gone through Ephesians on Sunday mornings, we’ve been reminded that God’s chosen entity to bring wisdom to the world is through the church. What can we learn through Joseph’s life about how we (personally and as the Church) can prepare and position ourselves to be this wisdom to the world?
