Wait Time

Wait time is talked about a lot in teacher training, but not much in parenting content. Giving our kids enough time to think and problem-solve builds so many lifelong skills. But finding the line between productive struggle and full shutdown or meltdown can be really tricky. So today we will talk about wait time: what it is, why it is important, why it is extra important for neurodivergent kids, and how you can use this strategy effectively at home.

Premies, Babies with Medical Needs & Neurodivergence

Today, we are talking about people who have had or have a primary medical concern that makes them far more likely to be neurodivergent than average. The biggest chunk of people in this group were born preterm, but it also includes some types of traumatic births, and people born with other conditions requiring high levels of medical care from birth. We will get into who is in this group, why this group is growing, and how we can best support these people and their families.

Candy & Dopamine for Neurodivergent People

It’s that time of year where candy is suddenly everywhere. Many neurodivergent families find that this constant access can result in behaviors like hoarding, binging, or lying that are surprising, confusing, and stressful. This isn’t because your kid is bad or trying to break rules, it’s because of dopamine! So today we get into how the dopamine works, what is different about dopamine for neurodivergent people and how we can support ourselves and our kids.

Taking Sensory Needs Seriously

Increased sensory needs are very common for neurodivergent people. Many of us have learned to ignore or downplay them, but that doesn’t make them go away! When we ignore our sensory needs, they grate on us in the background, making it harder for us to think, learn, and regulate ourselves. Today, we talk about what these sensory needs can look like for you or your kid, how to tune into them, and how to make little shifts to make sure we take these needs seriously in our daily lives.

Teacher Strategies to Use at Home Part 1: Scaffolding

Today, we are starting a little mini-series on teaching strategies you can use at home. We are kicking off the series with scaffolding and the related strategy of gradual release. These are deliberate strategies teachers use to help kids master a skill WITHOUT throwing them in the deep end, letting them fail, or doing it for them. We talk about what these strategies are, why they work, and how you can use them at home with your kids.

Why Can My Kid Sometimes Do Something but Other Times They Can’t?

Today, we're talking about the dynamic nature of neurodivergence. If you have ever wondered why you or your kid can do a routine one day but not the next, or remember math facts in the morning but not in the afternoon, we are getting into it! We talk about what neurodivergence being dynamic means, what this looks like, the factors that commonly make symptoms better or worse, and how we can use this knowledge to support ourselves and our kids.
