The Ethics of Desire | Ep 02 - Group discussion

SUMMARY OF THE EPISODE

In this episode, Carlos Santos is joined by Tristen and Santi to have a discussion on the ideas presented in episode 1 "What is desire, really?".

They explore how desires motivate human action, shape perceptions of reality, and the moral implications of pursuing certain desires.

The conversation also touches on the evolving understanding of freedom and responsibility in modern society, the covenantal nature of parenthood, and the emotional fulfillment derived from pets.

Ultimately, the discussion emphasizes the need for a framework to navigate desires in a way that aligns with moral agency and deeper human values.

The Ethics of Desire | Introduction

SUMMARY OF THE EPISODE

Carlos Santos gives an introduction of the theme for season 2. He explores the complex relationship between desire, ethics, and meaning.

He challenges the conventional view that desires are obstacles to a meaningful life, proposing instead that they can serve as gateways to morality and purpose.

Terminal cancer, chemotherapy, death and God || Conversation with my friend Hugo/Ronny Lema

This is a conversation with one of my close friends, Hugo, who is 25 years old. Hugo was diagnosed in October 2023 with stomach-gastric cancer, stage 4 (terminal cancer). It is one of the most difficult cancers to treat.

Hugo has been given a life expectancy of approximately 10 months. He has been fighting cancer undergoing chemotherapy for 7 months.

In this conversation we talk about how he found out the news, his emotional state, how he fights daily to maintain a positive attitude despite the prognosis.

This conversation was initially done in Spanish. The video went viral and a lot of Hugo's friends do not speak Spanish. That is why we sat down again to have the conversation in English. In case you want to listen to the Spanish conversation, here you can find the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oYn26dUJZU&ab_channel=CarlosSantosAguirreES

Episode 14: Would an anti-meritocratic society be a better society? || Meritocracy Series - Part 4

Meritocracy is the idea that those who make the most effort deserve to be where they are. In other words, if some people have more economic success and accomplishments than others is because they have worked harder. In this podcast series on meritocracy, I will analyze critically the different aspects the meritocratic ideal takes for granted.

Also, I will show how this way of interpreting reality can lead us into harmful ways of living our lives and treating others.

This episode is part 4 to the podcast series on meritocracy. I have a conversation with one of my best friends Tristen Sleeper. We talk about why the place of generosity and gratitude in our lives. This is the last episode of the series and season 1 of the podcast: This is the line-up:

#1 Why a society based on merit can’t fix inequality.

#2 Why nobody “deserves” what they have.

#3 Why letting the market decide what is valuable is a terrible idea.

#4 Would an anti-meritocratic society be a better society?

Episode 9: My Holistic Productivity System

Holistic productivity is the remedy to the pervasive hustle culture that promotes productivity at the expense of our relationships and humanity. Toxic productivity is violence to the soul.

In this episode, I talk about 5 principles I live by when structuring my week and work life. Work to live, don’t live to work. I share how I optimize my life to love more (not do more) while doing meaningful work.

#1 Principle: Work according to your body energy.
#2 Principle: Time blocking with fixed-schedule productivity.
#3 Principle: The simpler the routine, the better.
#4 Principle: Ruthlessly eliminate distractions.
#5 Principle: Work to live, don’t live to work.

📖REFERENCES📖

If you want to learn more about time blocking and fixed-schedule productivity, please read and listen to all the content Cal Newport has. He is somebody I follow to have a productive life that doesn’t negate the fact that we work to live and not the other way around:

Episode 8: ANDREW TATE and THE DECLINE OF MASCULINITY || Part 2

In this episode, I have an intellectual battle with Andrew Tate and his conception of masculinity. In this podcast, we have the last round over the topic of the Red Pill Community. To make it more digestible, I included the first two rounds in the previous podcast episode 7. And Round 3 will be the main point of discussion of this podcast episode 8.

🗣️ PART 1 🗣️(Previous Podcast – Episode 7)

🥊 Round 1 – Warrior Ethic: Performance over feelings (“a man fulfills his duty despite how he feels”).

🥊  Round 2 – Meritocracy: You get the life you work for.

🗣️ PART 2 🗣️ (This episode)

🥊  Round 3 – A blend of ideas from the Red Pill online community (high man value, stoicism, courage, and traditionalism.)

👉🏼 TABLE OF CONTENT OF ROUND 3

1 – High Value Man

1.1 Explanation of “High value man”

1.2 Criticism – “High value man”

2 – Stoicism and emotional control

2.1 Explanation of “Stoicism” according to Tate

2.2 Criticism 1: are women more emotional than men?

2.3 Criticism 2: selective “emotional control”

Philosophy in Real Life
Episode 7: ANDREW TATE and THE DECLINE OF MASCULINITY || Part 1

In this episode, I talk about the controversial public figure: Andrew Tate. This is the first part of a two-part podcast episode on Andrew Tate and the decline of masculinity.

In this episode, I have an intellectual battle with Andrew Tate and his conception of masculinity. There will be three “rounds” where I will analyze and criticize in each round one main philosophical idea that makes up his notion of masculinity.

To make it more digestible, I will have the first two rounds in this podcast episode. And Round 3 will be the main point of discussion of the second part that will be posted in two weeks from this first episode.

🗣️ PART 1 🗣️

🥊 Round 1 – Warrior Ethic: Performance over feelings (“a man fulfills his duty despite how he feels”).

🥊  Round 2 – Meritocracy: You get the life you work for.

🗣️ PART 2 🗣️ (next podcast episode)

🥊  Round 3 – A blend of ideas from the Red Pill online community (high man value, stoicism, courage, and traditionalism.)

It means a lot when you give like and share the video. I want to do this long term, and it will be only possible with your support!

Philosophy in Real Life
Episode 6: Philosophy PhD student REVEALS his READING METHOD

In this episode of the Philosophy in Real Life podcast, I talk about my reading methodology. It really sucks to invest so much time and not remember the things you read or just finishing a book and come to the realization that you just ended up with a vague idea about a book that you found meaningful. Needless to say, not all the books have the same value to us. In this video I share my thought process from picking what book to read to how I go about keeping quotations and book summaries.

These are the main points I discuss in this episode 6:

1. How much do you know about the field?

2. What book should you pick? popular versus academic

3. My method: the three levels of reading

4. Bonus Segment: How I use Notion to keep my book summaries

It means a lot when you give like and share the video. I want to do this long term, and it will be only possible with your support!

Episode 5: Movie Review - Barbie

📑 SUMMARY OF THE EPISODE 📑

In this episode I do a raw review of the Barbie movie. I discuss many topics about feminism, patriarchy, role of women, and Ben Shapiro’s critique of the Barbie movie. Here you have the parts:

1. Expansion of identity: from motherhood to womanhood”

2. The crisis of Barbie as the deconstruction of “the perfect woman”

3. The reconstruction of Barbie as “pure human potential”

4. War of the sexes: Patriarchy or Matriarchy?

5. Where do we go from here? Beyond feminism

6. A word to my right-wing friends and Ben Shapiro’s critique of the movie
