Back in the 90s, I would often take late night drives between the San Francisco Bay Area (where my parents lived) and Santa Barbara (where I went to college). During the dark, lonely hours cruising down highway 101, I’d listen to a funky, weird, slightly creepy yet interesting radio show. I never quite understood what it was. That’s because it was Art Bell’s Coast to Coast AM radio show.

I noticed some heated online arguments in the anthropology world about human sexuality, where several noted anthropologists recommended the book “Sex is a Spectrum” by Agustin Fuentes, so I read it. What I learned: Unfortunately, pseudoscience exists in other realms beyond pseudoarchaeology.

I recently got the unfortunate news that Dr. Brian Fagan, one of my mentors in archaeology (and especially archaeology for the public), had passed away. I thought I’d take some time to reminisce about my time with him and how it affected me.

Every so often, I need to bring this situation up to date! It’s current events time here at the Pseudoarchaeology Podcast, so I thought I’d discuss three things: The “structures” underneath the pyramids (there aren’t any), how the location of the Lost Ark was found in 1988 (it wasn’t), and how I was a special guest on Flint Dibble’s livestream with Milo Rossi (it was super fun)!

So I went to the annual Society for American Archaeology meetings in Denver weekend before last. I presented on my archaeology work on the Maya cenotes in Belize, but I also spent lots of time listening to (and assisting with) presentations on how to present archaeology to the public. What I learned: some people absolutely understand how to present archaeology to the public, and some people have no clue. Tune in to figure out who’s who! So there I was, minding my own business when the Ronald Reagan Library gave me a call and asked me to check out their exhibit on the Dead Sea Scrolls! Did they want me because I am a world-renowned archaeologist, or because I’m an archaeologist who lives only 10 minutes away? Either way, it was great.
