UK Paternity Is a Motherf*er — Alex Lloyd-Hunter Explains Why

Today is International Men's Day and we sat down withsomeone who knows a thing or two about exhaustion and activism — Alex Lloyd-Hunter, Co-founder of The Dad Shift and proud dad of two.

We got into the real talk:

*Why the UK has the worst paternity leave in Europe (yes… WORST).

*How dads and non-birthing parents are expected to bond, support, recover, and surviveon two weeks off, paid at less than half the minimum wage.

*And why self-employed parents get… absolutely nothing.

Alex breaks down why decent paternity leave isn’t a “nice-to-have” — it’s a lifeline for men, women, kids, and every non-birthing parent trying to keep their head above water.

We also talk about The Dad Shift’s brilliantly bold campaigns — from life-size baby models swaddled onto London statues to the brutally honest rallying cry: “UK Paternity is a motherf*er.”**

Because honestly? It is. And it’s screwing everyone over.

It is refreshing to see Dads lead the charge and we lookforward to see the change that will follow!

Share with anyone and everyone who believes children, families and society deserve better.

Atlanta & Miami Highlights

We’ve got stories, laughs, and tips to share.

We’re poolside in Miami (yes… melting in the heat 🥵) and chatting all about our Atlanta + Miami adventures!

Major tip: Do not forget a physical credit card or your Monzo

Seriously, so many places do not do tap-to-pay or apple pay. Major buzzkill when all your cards live on your phone or your watch!!

From renting cars and trying to drive on the right side of the road (make sure you’ve got a co-pilot!) to diving to the Georgia Aquarium—the biggest one in the USA. We’ve got stories, laughs, and tips to share.

The dolphin show was definitely the highlight but get there early, and don’t skip touching the fish at Discovery Cove!

Oh, and let’s talk Chuck E. Cheese… total sensory overload 😂 but the kids had the best time, the staff were awesome, and it didn’t break the bank.

Pro tip: bring a refillable water bottle (because hydration is not endless Coke refills)

Bottom line? We’re having the BEST time. Tune in for the laughs, the mishaps, and all the must-dos. And of course, watch our YouTube + Insta for the full reviews and behind-the-scenes chaos!

Big Splashes at the Georgia Aquarium

Ever wanted to lock eyes with a Beluga whale, get nose-to-glass with the “predators of the deep,” and be completely hypnotized by glowing jellyfish? We did it all at the Georgia Aquarium — the biggest in the USA!

From dolphins with serious splash-zone skills (pro tip: first 10 rows = free shower) to stingray handshakes at Discovery Cove, this place is pure aquatic magic. The kids made unforgettable connections with the animals

The staff? Absolute gems — smart, kind, and always ready with live fun facts as you wander through.

The best hacks: arrive at least 30 minutes early for the dolphin show, save Ocean Voyager for last (trust us, it’s a finale-worthy moment). Although the experience is worth the full ticket price, definitely check for those discount ticket days.

If you’re looking for wonder, water, and a whole lot of “whoa,” Georgia Aquarium delivers big time

Huge thanks to the super-friendly staff for keeping it clean, safe, and high-energy. Bonus: it’s actually great value for money with so much packed into one place.

If you’re in Atlanta and want to let the kids (or yourself ) burn off some serious energy.

Delta Diaries: 5 Kids, 4 Adults, 1 Flight to Atlanta

Buckle up (literally) and join us for this down to earth episode as we fly Delta Airlines (booked via Dial A Flight) with five kids and four exhausted-but-determined adults. From fidget toys to snack stashes, we’re tag-teaming our way through tantrums, movies, and spilled juice boxes — one seat row at a time.

We share:

Snack hacks (buy them local, buy them cheap, buy them in bulk).

Entertainment essentials (fidget toys from The Works & Amazon = lifesavers)

The non-negotiable: always pack spare clothes.

Surviving with lots of luggage, meltdowns, and surprisingly sweet sibling moments when the big kids step up to help the little ones.

Yes, the parents are running on fumes, but we land in Atlanta with high spirits, happy tears, and Alice’s skip-hop down the aisle.

Next stop? Picking up our minivan rental adventure — stay tuned!

Review: Bubble Planet - Wembley

Bubbles, but make them huge. This immersive family adventure takes you through 5(ish) colourful, surreal rooms — from giant bubble wonderlands to infinity rooms, ball pits, bubble bath pits, and even fantastical landscapes. Basically, if you’ve ever wanted to feel like you’re living inside a screensaver from 2004… this is your chance.

Tickets: £19 kids / £25 adults. For our family of four = £70+ entry, plus £15 parking = one very expensive morning out.

Travel: 2 hours from SE London (aka “Are we there yet?” on loop).

The verdict:

1. Worth it? Yes — the kids loved it and there are some unique experiences. It’s about 90 minutes long, so plan more things nearby.

2.  Go again? Not for another 2 years (our wallets need time to recover).

3.  Recommend? Yes — make a day of it. We hit BoxPark for food after, and there’s a playground nearby.

Review: Monster Funfair - Discover Children's Story Centre

We braved the Monster Funfair (yes, built entirely by actual monsters ) at the Discover Children's Story Centre in Stratford.

Inside, you’ll find all sorts of weird and wonderful fairground attractions—plus a mystery that even Scooby-Doo would envy: who on earth (or monsterland) stole ALL the candyfloss?

The funfair is inspired by the brilliant books of award-winning author Nadia Shireen, featuring familiar faces like Billy and Fatcat, The Bumblebear, the Grimwood gang, and more.

🎟 Tickets:

Entry to the Discover Children's Story Centre

Adults: £10

Under 1s: Free

Age 1: £5.50

Age 2+: £10

Monster Funfair: +£5 per child (grown-ups don’t pay extra—phew!)

It’s monstrously good fun (and calorie-free, unless you find the missing candyfloss).

Dad Matters UK - Interview with Kieran from Home-Start UK

Whether you're a dad, have a dad, or love someone who is one — this episode is for you.

Tune in, laugh a little, maybe cry a little, and definitely walk away with a deeper appreciation for the dads in our lives

This Father's Day, we’re celebrating dads. In this episode, we sit down with Kieran, who leads the incredible Dad Matters project as part of Home-Start UK. Kieran opens up about his own journey into fatherhood, the lessons he learned from his own dad, and (spoiler alert) his dream Father’s Day gift.

But this episode is more than just dad jokes and sweet stories, we dive deep into the emotional transition to fatherhood, the science of bonding before birth, and why dads matter just as much as mums when it comes to babies’ development. Kieran shares how Dad Matters is on a mission to help fathers understand their role, connect with their babies, and feel empowered to seek support when they need it — all while building stronger families from the very beginning.

From myth-busting the idea that only mums have parenting instincts, to championing paternity leave, this episode is full of eye-openers, empathy, and a good dose of dad wisdom.

What No One Tells You About Perinatal Mental Health – Ellie’s Journey

Whether you’re a new parent, expectant parent, partner, friend, or professional, this is a must-listen conversation about antenatal and postnatal mental health and the power of sharing, supporting, and showing up for one another.

In this special Mental Health Awareness week episode, we sit down with Ellie—mum of two, perinatal mental health advocate, and volunteer for the PANDAS Foundation—to share her honest story.

Ellie opens up about her mental health journey before becoming a mum, the challenges she faced during pregnancy, and the emotional upheaval that followed the birth of her first child. With vulnerability, and courage, she walks us through the realities of perinatal mental health—discussing everything from intrusive thoughts and perinatal OCD to the importance of community support and creating a personalised postnatal care plan.

This episode sheds light on the often-unspoken struggles parents face during the antenatal and postnatal periods. Ellie’s lived experience, paired with her work as a peer supporter, group facilitator for Bromley Pandas, and advocate with the Maternal Mental Health Alliance, offers valuable insight and hope for those walking a similar path.

We talk about mindful motherhood, the role of partners, how to prepare for a perinatal mental health crisis, and why we need to shift how we talk about "maternity leave"—or as Emma Barnett calls it, “maternity service.” Ellie also shares her uplifting home birth experience, her work in peer-led support spaces, and her passion for helping parents feel heard, seen, and supported.
